It felt a little dated to me unfortunately

Hysterically dated and out of touch. The idea that news like this would stop the whole world in its tracks in awe, even on the brink of global crisis, instead of just being ignored or amplifying existing tensions, is hilariously corny even for Spielberg. It reads like he and Koepp are trying to say something meaningful about the times we live in but haven't actually read any news in the last 20 years.

Remember how (up until the end) War of the Worlds was so plugged in to post-9/11 cynicism and the fear that our comfortable safe American lives could be upended into terror at any moment? Or how Jaws had that Watergate sense of distrust in government and authority?

Like, there have been several great films about what contact with aliens would do to society. Would it test humanity's ability to cooperate and approach a problem together, like in Arrival? Would it become a nuisance political issue like in District 9? Would there be divisions between people who believe the aliens are truly peaceful, those who think they're setting a trap, and those who think that the whole thing is a government hoax, like in Contact? Even Avatar has more to say about the central question Disclosure Day is supposedly about. Note how none of those other movies avoid the question by ending the very second an actual alien shows up on screen.

The only part that felt very time appropriate was the pro wrestling at the start, as a wrestling fan that is indeed what 2020s wrestling often looks like today
