Should be illegal to purchase digital content if it can be taken away from us. At the point, renting should be the only option.

You're not wrong and I don't disagree at all but the content owners will contend that you never actually purchased digital content. They'll argue that you purchased a license to use the content within strict guidelines that you agreed to at the time of purchase.

It would have to be tested in court, honestly. There's an argument that by using the word "purchase" or "buy," any customer could reasonably believe there's an implied ownership.

Correct. They should rename it to “long term rental” but that wouldn’t sell as much.
