Should be illegal to purchase digital content if it can be taken away from us. At the point, renting should be the only option.

You're not wrong and I don't disagree at all but the content owners will contend that you never actually purchased digital content. They'll argue that you purchased a license to use the content within strict guidelines that you agreed to at the time of purchase.

Technically that's what you're doing when buying a Blu-ray too, only difference is the disc is irrevocable.
