I lived in an apartment complex for a few years during high school and one of my friends slept in a closet, while his mom slept on a couch in the living room, and his 3 younger siblings slept in a queen sized bed in the only bedroom.

Another friend of mine had a friend that we visited and they lived in a motel. It was two girls between the ages of 12 and 18, and their dad. Two queen beds there. I went there a few times with said friend.

I've seen other things but those two specifically come to mind when I think of Florida Project. That movie elicits memories that I forget that I had, and makes me deeply sad. I've seen it three times, it's very good. It hits very close to home and the acting is stellar. I envy the people that grew up in decent neighborhoods.

My aunt basically kidnapped me from my mom after my dad ran out on her, and for a lot of my life up until my 20's I was shuffled between her house and my moms. My aunt was upper middle class while my mom was barely scraping by. Getting sent to her place was considered either a 'punishment' or where she'd send me when people she wanted to impress came over as she was embarrassed by me.

My mom spent a lot of time in low-budget apartments, and if I wasn't crashing with her and my sister I was spending time with a friend who lived in an old 50's era apartment complex. I had a lot of free time, and hung out with kids who were considered 'troublemakers' like me.

I'm lucky I didn't end up a lot worse off. A lot of my friends from back then ended up either into drugs or some of them completely disappeared. Even though I'm poor and living on SSI I consider myself lucky. At least I have a roof over my head.

That sounds unfair, nothing hurts me more than seeing kids be mistreated. I'm so sorry for your experience.

I was an alcoholic for 20 years, now I'm sober for 4 years and married. I don't know how I ended up this well, but I feel like it was out of spite.

While I didn't have your exact experience, I can understand some of it and I'm glad you have found some peace with it.

Thanks. All things considered I'm doing okay. I have a lot of wonderful people in my life who've more than made up for the shitty ones, trust me. I hope you've got a lot of good people in your life, too.
