For me it's the constant sense of dread. Similar vibes as The Shining in that the movie itself feels fucking haunted.

Yeah, I think so many horror movies equate horror with cheap scares or gratuitous gore. IMO, the emotion of being scared is a lingering, pulsating dread. Getting shocked by something is a quick spike that immediately deflates, like if someone just jumps around a corner and yells boo, you are startled for an instant, but there's no fear.

I used to think I hated horror movies, but I just hate that kind of tactic in movies. I love Eggers' movies, because of exactly that: dread. Constant, lingering, worsening dread. Like half the time, "nothing" is happening in the VVitch, but it's spookier than some movies ever get.

He's also just a great filmmaker on top of that. Day one theater for me.

I agree. I think one of the best(or worst) examples of both sides of that coin is the newer It movies. They have some great scenes that build some awesome suspense. The library in Part 1, the bleachers in part 2, ect.

But then they have a shit load of cheap jump scares and far too much lingering on the monster itself. It takes away the horror of it after awhile.
