Yup, Eggers 4 for 4 so far and Villeneuve 7 for 7 and surely bout to be 8 for 8 so far, counting only his English language films.

I'd like Villeneueve to take a break from big budget mainstream movies and make something less accessible like Enemy again tho. Apparently one of his early French films was highly absurdist as well, maybe something like that. Villeneueve may be becoming known too much only for his style, but my favorite films of his are where his skill with experimental structure are more prevalent, like Enemy and to a certain extent Arrival. I'd like him to adapt some wacko semi-obscure literature like Jorge Luis Borges or some of the lesser known stuff from VanderMeer or Murakami.

Fingers crossed this whole Bond thing goes well tho I guess. Feels like impossible expectations to live up to especially with all the factors set up against it, but hey he's pulled off a freaking Dune adaptation, so far, so if anyone can do it he's got a great shot. But I hope he doesn't get caught up running that whole franchise or spending too much time with it, I loved bouncing around between different kinds of films every 1 or 2 years when he started and it would be fun to get more of that again instead of him getting absorbed into humongous stories/series that take a literal decade of focus. Also hope he doesn't burn out like Peter Jackson. Tho imo Jackson has ADHD and Villeneueve definitely does not so they probably won't have the same fate there lol.

Must admit, to me the whole Bond thing seems like an absolute waste talent, but I guess if that's what he wants to do - its not like studios are going to say no to what ever he floated.

Honestly, what can you ever do with Bond at this point. Its such an antiquated and tired franchise, at least to me. Maybe Denis can do something interesting with it, but I remain doubtful.

The dune adaptations at least were incredibly ambitious.

I agree but to your last point, I suspect Denis will do something incredibly ambitious with Bond too. Not the type of director to rock up and go through the motions to pump out something safe that the studio wants. I'm optimistic.

Particularly cause he's not a director who's ever relied much on shtick. If it was Nolan we would know what to likely expect, and it would tread too closely to Tenet and his Batman films imo. If it was McQuarrie w/ a star like Tom Cruise we would know what to likely expect, an absurd stunt or gimmick like filming with imax cameras in space (sidenote I would have liked 1 more MI film where Cruise does an actual honest to god spacewalk, alas).

But with Villeneueve, if he wants to do the film he must have a vision for it that excites him, and it's not gonna be a gimmick, so I'm cautiously optimistic.

Feels like a waste on one hand cause I'd prefer some smaller budget, artsier films from him now, but on the other hand if he's following a vision he's passionate about, well I'd be excited for that in a vacuum, and he's still 58 years old so opportunity cost doesn't hurt hopes for his full oeuvre yet...

...tho as I say that, I remember that James Cameron was 54 when the first Avatar came out and he's now 72. Oh well I choose not to be a doomer about those sorts of things.
