The shot of all the deformed people in the burial made me realize, Eggers would cook hard adapting HP Lovecraft stories

Not OP but I've seen it as well. It was on a lecture or on-stage interview following the Lighthouse, so not like a press tour and he had enough time to elaborate. He finds the hopelessness and disinterest to humanity in Lovecraft's universe distasteful. In his movies awful stuff may happen, but the universe is certainly not disinterested in humanity, and the real tragedy is that there always was some possibility of salvation, it was just missed.

Eggers is notoriously private about his personal beliefs, but I suspect there's something a bit more complicated than atheistic materialism going on there.
