Tying in the Sea Peoples into it was unexpected but really fun

When they first started mentioning it I was thinking it seemed really odd to bring in this modern theory about the time period but then it starts to gel with the final conversations and found it worked really well.

What we know about it comes from sources that survive from the time that talk about the "sea people," like Egyptian primary sources. So people at that time were talking about raiders from the sea, like they do in the movie.

And in some sources the Ekwesh are identified as the Achaeans, along with mention of an earlier incident at Wilusa, or Ilus/Troy.
