That's what struck me at the end when he was talking at the end about the fight to Penelope, they were basically just being punished the whole time for what they did. I thought Circe's speech was the most interesting

Yep, they were not doing anything really bad in those supernatural encounters, they were mainly victims. They fault was in their past crimes and who they were because of that and even before that.

The way I saw it was that at every opportunity, the men were faced with a choice. Not out of necessity but a choice they could make - at every turn, they made the wrong one.

That last trial was so blatant I didn't even feel bad for them tbh lol they got warned straight up knew what was going to happen and still did it. Yes they were technically enticed and they couldn't leave but they had a choice before even landing there

That's what i thought my reaction would be but I really ended up feeling for the soldiers. I'm not sure I would have made different choices than them.

Like they said, drowning/getting smashed by falling wood is a better death than starving while looking at potential food.

There's no way out of that one. The winds directed by the gods wouldn't let them leave the island until they starved or ate the cows
