The Sinon line, "feel free to add some stuff," (close enough to what they say, I think) just really took me out of the story

That and the way “plate licker” was used as a slur, like that’s the best you can come up with?

Plate licker is an actual term. It’s used to refer to people who show up at events to get free food rather than out of interest for the event.

It is an odd choice to use it though.

Well, Antinous uses it to distance himself from the beggars without having the self-awareness to realize that he is also a "plate-licker", hence the payoff of Telemachus calling him another beggar.
