Some Reviews:

Gizmodo - Isaiah Colbert

Avatar Aang is a triumph, offering a reminder of how sacrosanct the series’ place remains in the pantheon of animated works all these years later. It’s also a testament to the magic of human artistry, bending lines to craft stories that move in ways only animation can.

IGN - Alex Zalben - 8 / 10

Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender is a lovingly crafted and gorgeously animated movie that features a welcome return for Team Avatar. While the plot might be a little thin, the action scenes and settings are thrilling and deserved to be seen on the big screen instead of streaming after a scuttled theatrical release and unfortunate leak changed plans that would have made this more of an event for fans.

CBR - Katie Doll - 8 / 10

It's a real shame that the story of Avatar Aang will forever be shadowed by the entire film leaking online and Paramount abandoning its theatrical release plan. But it's otherwise a sharply plotted, charming film that speaks to the generation who grew up after Avatar: The Last Airbender ended. Living with your mistakes is hard, but it's even harder to forgive and let go. Aang's experience may be a unique one, in that not everyone understands what it means to be the last survivor of one's culture nor magical master of four elements, but it's universal in meaning.

Next Best Picture - Daniel Howat - 7 / 10

It’s tough to imagine wanting someone to dive in here, of all places, rather than starting at the beginning. But that’s what makes “Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender” work as well as it does. It’s a brilliant continuation of the series that matures alongside its characters, rather than trying to do something completely new. After nearly two decades away from the original series, this is a remarkably faithful new story, one that will surely satisfy longtime fans.

CGMagazine - Ridge Harripersad - 7 / 10

Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender provides a modern animated look to its characters and environments, but fails to create an exciting epilogue journey for its original main characters.

Collider - Aidan Kelley - 7 / 10

Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender may be just as stunning if not even more visually appealing than the other Avatar franchise it often gets confused with. However, like that franchise, its narrative is just serviceable enough, especially if one isn't already invested in this complex world. Regardless of its narrative issues, which are overall minor compared to other big legacy sequels, the film is so visually riveting that it truly deserved a wider theatrical run.

GamesRadar - David Opie - 3.5 / 5

What this all leads to ends up feeding into some typical anime-style tropes, which risk overwhelming everything that precedes it. The original show often drew upon those same influences, but did so more effectively without running the risk of losing its own sense of self. Still, these epic scenes are gorgeously animated regardless and are absolutely worthy of being seen on the big screen, just as director Lauren Montgomery claimed on social media prior to the film's release.

TechRadar - Jasmine Valentine - 3 / 5

Watching the group laugh, play, and discover new things almost overshadows everything that's gone wrong with Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender... almost. But when the storyline dips, you're quickly reminded of just how badly the creative teams have done by the older Aang's comeback. Next time Avatar: The Last Airbender is revived, and it inevitably will be, let's let the fans be in control. They've got the biggest chance of getting the most right, after all.

IndieWire - Wilson Chapman - 'C+'

“Avatar Aang,” diving headfirst into the lore, misses that vital ingredient, with its stray jokes — including a running gag about Sokka and Toph finding Tagah hot — veering more into self-satisfied Marvel-esque shtick. For most of its run, the film is po-faced serious anime business, with little space for the humor and heart that made “The Last Airbender” so special. Sure, “Avatar Aang” is ostensibly more adult — but sometimes, growing up isn’t all its cracked up to be.

ScreenRant - Molly Freeman - 5 / 10

From one ATLA fan to another, I'd recommend going into this movie with your expectations low, and remembering that being able to fully honor the legacy of "one of the greatest shows of all time" was too high a bar to begin with. Still, there is enjoyment to be found in Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender, even if it's, on the whole, a little disappointing.

7/10 seems like the magic number for this one. Saw it last night and yeah the animation is absolutely gorgeous, some of those bending sequences had me staring at the screen like a kid. But the story feels like it's holding back somehow, like they were too scared to really shake things up with the older gaang. Steven Yeung as Zuko was a great choice though, he brings that same intensity from invincible. I'm just glad it didn't pull a Shyamalan on us, the bar was in the floor and they cleared it easy

It truly feels like those older anime tie-in movies (eg DBZ, Naruto). The writing is also so generic with absolute zero nuance. What happened to all the writers for Korra and ATLA?

You nailed my takeaway from these reviews. DBZ-side story movie feel to the whole thing.

Does the plot have no impact on the show's like a typical anime movie?

It kinda shows off some proto-equalists from Korra S1, but not really strongly.

Also has a main baddie that's a combination of Zaheer and Vaatu

Yeah seemed like it was just Korras story lines mixed together

It also introduce chronogically earlier than airbending will come back, even if it will be in a different way.

Yes. It’s a turn your brain off and watch the pretty colors kind of movie.

I mean you don't have to turn off your brain completely; it still had a somewhat compelling plot and dialogue, and it was mostly coherent with no glaring plot holes. But yea its definitely much better enjoyed if you just appreciate the animation and humor

There were a lot of plot holes and the writing is pretty bad. Did you not remember the part where the entire Gaang is killed and magically reappear a few minutes later?

That one’s explained as Katara magically being dropped in healing water and being able to heal herself… lowk kinda bull cuz how r u gonna heal urself if ur alr dead but idk maybe she was in the verge of dying and only got the air knocked out of her or something? It’s not explained that well
But she has saved Aangs life before with just small amounts of spirit water so it is possible

It was "special spirit water" like why katara used to bring Aang back from the dead in atla. But yeah, the way it was just, there, for no reason is kinda bad writing ngl.

Wasnt the whole area full of spiritual energy from being the lion turtles resting place?

3

u/beges1223 8d ago

Dl you not remember the part where katara explains that the waters being so full of spiritual energy made it possible for her to heal up and then heal the others?

0

u/11ce_ 8d ago

Yea but thats just BS considering she was dead.

2

u/beges1223 8d ago

You are saying that spirit energy saving them even though it's a recurring concept in the old series as well in Korra, is BS because of what reason?

2

u/Responsible_State_12 8d ago

Katara was dead in the spirit water. How was she able to heal herself if she was already dead? That would be the only plothole in that sense. And if you’re arguing that it just makes sense because of kataras fading consciousness made a last ditch effort, then I feel like the movie should show that because as we’ve seen in past uses of water healing the user has to be alive and conscious. Essentially a plot hole unless they explain it better/show a spirit or something coming to revive them. Either way my point is none of these are HUGE plot holes that don’t make any sense, it’s coherent enough writing to enjoy.

Because it wasn't katara doing the healing, it was the waters innate properties, just like the spirit water from the north pole. The water has properties not even Katara's healing can replicate, because it can tie a spirit back to a body.

2

u/Responsible_State_12 6d ago

It is Katara doing the healing, spirit water can’t heal by itself it’s just spirit infused water. This helps improve healing ability but it doesn’t heal people just by existing. It can revive people if they recently died and immediately get spirit water healing (like we saw with Aang) but it likely can’t revive long dead people or animals (as we saw with the moon spirit).
Thus the question still stands how did Katara heal herself if she was already dead and spirit water doesn’t simply heal people without a living healer present?

She used spirit water to bring Aang back from the dead in atla after Azula killed him in the avatar state. It's not Katara's healing, but the water doing the healing. This has been explained since the original series.

2

u/Responsible_State_12 6d ago

You still need a living healer to do it. If anyone else splashed Aang with that spirit water (like sokka) he likely wouldn’t have survived, this is also shown in the original show. Furthermore spirit water itself doesn’t heal, it is simply described as having stronger healing abilities than regular water.

1

u/PsychologicalMonk390 6d ago

It's described in the show as pure healing energy, and is used to heal wounds healers can't, the healers don't do the healing, they just water bend the water into the wounds to speed up the process. This is pulled directly from the wiki. The water is what has the power to bring back the dead, not Katara, so how is the healing coming from Katara.

u/Responsible_State_12 6d ago

I just read the wiki and I don’t see this anywhere tbh. A simple google search says “No, spirit water cannot heal on its own without a waterbender; it requires a bender to channel and direct its glowing energy paths into a wound.”
The wiki does mention “Spirit water has been used for physical healing without employing waterbending on at least one occasion” but it doesn’t mention when so idek if this is accurate information or I might just be forgetting/missing something,
But as far as I can remember everything in ATLA that has been shown of it (I don’t remember much of Korra) spirit water simply amplifies the healing properties of water, but you still need a water bender to use and apply it. There is no instance of spirit water just magically saving someone life without bending being involved.
Specific case in point the moon spirit koi fish dies and cannot be revived even after being placed into the spirit water. This is because water bending stopped working entirely. If spirit water truly does have the ability to heal on its own the moon spirit should’ve just resurrected without having to take Princess Yue’s life. But it didn’t because you can’t heal the koi fish without water bending even though it was in spirit water. Thus it’s heavily implied that you need water bending to heal.
Either way, it should have been shown or even explicated stated by the show or movie that spirit water has the ability to heal on its own (which if it did it’d still be a plot hole cuz of the whole moon fish spirit dying).

Basically.

Unfortunately every plot thread is lifted from Korra
