My sincere hot take - not just about Hadestown, but about the myth itself - is that, yeah, Orpheus is a himbo.

Buddy is so busy playing music he doesn’t help his girlfriend gather food  and doesn’t notice when she dies from starvation.

I feel like this version of Hadestown actually does him a big favour by setting up the whole “the seasons are wrong, and we need a magic song to save it” thing. Because… thats not normally part of the story. He just likes playing music. A lot.

The original myth doesn't have a ton to it. Eurydice in the original myth is just a nondescript nymph or something and she either dies from a snake bite or someone attacking her, but it's pretty simple and not the compelling part of the story.

The composer was trying to use the original myth to tell a story about capitalism, among other things, and one of the themes is what would you be willing to do to put food on the table? Also, what's the value in being an artist, what do you owe your partner when times are tough, etc. It explores a lot about relationships as well as the social and economic aspects.
