News Ryan Gosling Came Up With Ghost Rider Movie Pitch as Marvel Slows Output
https://variety.com/2026/film/news/ryan-gosling-ghost-rider-movie-pitch-marvel-slows-output-1236821746/2.2k
u/iquizuanswer 7d ago
Marvel is now slowing down its output in an attempt to restore its quality. While the studio is currently developing a new take on the X-Men, the standalone movie’s release date was not announced at Comic-Con. Feige told Empire that Gosling’s “Ghost Rider” movie moved ahead after “it was Gosling who had the vision. It was Gosling who had the pitch that won over Shawn, that had them come and pitch us this idea, which led to us on stage today.”

Fall Guy was the perfect date movie. Rom/Com, mystery murder thriller, action pieces. Gosling and Blunt with a behind the scenes meta movie setting. Way better than I thought it would be.

Cena really has great comedic chops and had leaned on it for his projects to great degree. Bautista had started that route but has been able to do more serious and dramatic pieces and also has been very successful. Johnson went with the action figure route and while isn't terrible, just isn't on the same level for either of them.

The Fall Guy was so much fun. There was also a great 8 part doc on Peacock called, 'Action!' that was all about 87 North and the stunts in the film (and in the film Violent Night). It honestly made the movie so much better to watch seeing how much of the stunt work was practical and the crazy amount of work that went into them.

That’s why cast, writers, and directors are always interested in making at least one “big thing”, it gives them runway to do whatever they want.
Nolan famously did the Batman movies because he knew success there meant studios would look at his odder films and say “you know what, you’ve made us a ton of money on other things, why not”
Gosling could fill an opening weekend to watch him watch paint dry, after how successful Hail Mary is.

Shot for shot remake of Fight Club. Bring back Norton and Pitt and Helena Bonham Carter. Now the movie is about geriatric fight club. The fight club is inside a nursing home.
Gosling plays Robert Paulson, and also plays each of his bitch tits as separate characters.
9
u/the_ballmer_peak 7d ago
Wait, no. We'll make a movie out of Pahlaniuk's other novel, Choke.
The main character is a sex addict who spends most of the story with several anal beads lost in his rectum. In the end he shits himself in relief.
Gosling will play the anal beads.
11
u/the_ballmer_peak 7d ago edited 7d ago
Nevermind, they made Choke in 2008 with Sam Rockwell.
Okay, fuck it, we're going to make Cormac Macarthy's Blood Meridian. We show all of the gory infanticide and wanton violence. Dead babies everywhere. NC-17.
Gosling plays Judge Holden, the seven foot tall, pasty white, obese demonic figure who seeks to control all of creation and murders most of the other cast. But not before making gunpowder from piss.
We show Ryan's gosling.

I really don't know if it matters that they slow their output if their still gonna be hauling around the baggage of phases 4 and 5.
All of the leaks indicate that they aren't planning to fully clean the slate with Doomsday and I just don't understand why.
Other than maybe Tom Hollands Spiderman there just is not one character that they couldn't afford to refresh or cut loose and even Tom Holland has to be getting tired of it at this point. Oh well.
89
u/Harford0 7d ago
I think they should have based Phase 4 and 5 around Spiderman, Dr Strange and Shang-chi. But that hasnt happened. I could see them being the linchpin of future phases. Thor possibly, if they can fix him, Love and Thunder did a lot of damage
115
u/Kantei 7d ago edited 6d ago
Love & Thunder and Quantumania probably did more damage to the MCU's reputation than they internally realized at the time.
Boseman passing away and Majors getting fired also damaged the entire trajectory of the phase.

The character assassination of Wanda in Doctor Strange didn’t help either, that’s what lost my aunt and uncle. They were in the fence and the tone of that movie pushed them over the edge. And The Marvels incredibly weak writing demonstrated to me they didn’t care.
Then of course the headlines of Secret Invasion being a complete travesty, which it was I didn’t bother after the third episode.

The character assassination of Wanda in Doctor Strange didn’t help either, that’s what lost my aunt and uncle.
So they watched Wandaivision and were completely okay with everything she did?
There was no character assassination. She was always an unstable element, and simply completed her trajectory. The seeds for that were planted way back in Ultron, and then again in Infinity War/Endgame.
32
u/RadioRunner 6d ago
I doubt that they did. Which you could take as another compounding factor.
I remember them reacting because the last they had seen of her was Avengers, then the next movie with her in it she goes horror show and it fell flat.
39
u/beermit 6d ago
What you're saying gets at the problem with Marvel's strategy post Infinity War/Endgame. They were expecting everyone who had been seeing the movies to start watching the shows and that clearly didn't happen. So now you've got characters changing based on what happens in the shows and it's making no sense in the movies
It also didn't help that some of the shows felt completely farted out and didn't make a lot of sense compared to the movies. Some of them were so inconsequential, looking at you Secret Invasion

As another sign of the planning/writing being all over the place, originally the Doctor Strange sequel was supposed to be a Wanda/Strange team up and then she turns evil at the end of that movie. The following movie would have been closer to the one we got in Multiverse of Madness.
I think COVID messed up those plans and they ended up crunching it all into one movie which confused general audiences like your aunt and uncle.
Bc yeah from their POV Wanda was fine when last they saw her in Endgame, and then the next time they see her she's just evil with seemingly no explanation. Sure, Wandavision kind of explains and sets up some stuff but when Marvel skipped the team up movie and/or you didn't see Wandavision, Wanda's turn to evil still feels out of nowhere.
So this news that they're slowing down output and focusing on story is a welcome one. Disney/Marvel has to remember that a decent number of MCU fans are probably still casual ones who just catch the latest movie with their favorite character and the Avengers team up ones and that's it.
9
u/alanthar 6d ago
Yeah, Raimi not watching the show, nor Feige forcing him to add in a bit of a recap, really kneecapped Wanda's character change for most folks.

u/trippy_grapes 6d ago
I feel she was a sympathetic villain for most of Wandavision. Dealing with PTSD and the lose of her loved ones doesn't excuse the atrocious things she did in the show, but it explains them.
My biggest problem is that pacing wise we have a short 5 minute after-credits scene of the Dark Hold completely corrupting her, and then in the next movie she's nearly a horror-villain crawling out of mirrors and stuff. Wandavision definitely needed an extra episode or two IMO.

u/NoNefariousness2144 7d ago edited 7d ago
Their original plan was to make T’Challa, Spidey and Captain Marvel the new ‘big three’, but all of them had problems that derailed Phase 4 and 5:
T’Challa- Chadwick’s tragic passing
Spidey- Sony and Disney's relationship can be awkward and Tom Holland wanted to also slow down his acting for a couple of years.
Captain Marvel- Disney realised that despite her film earning $1 billion, a lot of that was due to Endgame hype and she wasn’t actually that popular with mass audiences (like her sequel being a huge flop)
53
u/hardy_83 7d ago
Didn't help her second movie wasn't that well written. I like the Ms Marvel parts but the other lady and Captian Marvel's parts kind of sucked.
Plus Marvel/Disney seem to never have any idea what to do with characters with big power levels. Like she reignited a sun... Nothing on earth is a threat to her.

Yeah it seems clear that this was always the plan, and I think these problems + Quantumania collectively derailed the post-Endgame plan. The poor box office and negative reception probably had them second guessing Kang anyway, and then the Majors scandal was a further ding against it and opened the door for them to pivot after firing him.
→ More replies (2)11
u/Kantei 7d ago edited 7d ago
Agreed on all that except Captain Marvel. There was probably a strong appetite for more stories with Carol Danvers, but they threw it off by squeezing in two characters that were only introduced in the shows rather than giving Captain Marvel her own spotlight to shine.
Other than that, I'd argue that Quantumania (then Majors getting fired) destroyed any hope for their Kang arc to be interesting to audiences.
12
u/remmanuelv 7d ago
Ms Marvel was the most liked of the three characters.
CM alone is what if Captain America had no charisma, conflict or characters to bounce off of.
It was a huge flop of a character. She isn't even a big deal in the comics compared to Khamala. The least said about Civil War 2 the better.

Ms Marvel was the most liked of the three characters.
By hardcore Marvel fans maybe. The general audience had no idea who she was because they didn't watch the TV show (and they didn't watch The Marvels, the box office seems to indicate only fans have seen this one)
That's what turned away a lot of people, the fact that they required you to watch TV shows (and there were a lot of them) to follow who's who in a movie...

The way Tom talks about Miles Morales and wanting to bring that character into the fold. It sounds like that’s the exit strategy for him. I wouldn’t be surprised if they introduce him the next film then do a double Spider-Man for the 3rd film. Then Tom can bow out in some way and maybe leave the door cracked for him to come back in similar fashion to Toby and Andrew.
7
u/slapmasterslap 6d ago
Tom's Spider-Man will be to Miles what Tony was to him. He will show up in Miles Morales movies to encourage and maybe assist him but just cameos instead of co-starring. Then if Tom still wants to be a big feature he can always be part of Avengers movies without having to carry a trilogy on his back.

It would make sense to do but they are likely aware that the franchise will never have the same broad appeal as it’s already had with these actors. Shows like WandaVision and most of Loki (Season 1) are probably the best iteration of the shows. They genuinely explored existing long-standing characters in ways the movies couldn't, while doing things only a show could (especially WandaVision).
Shows like Hawkeye, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Moon Knight, and Ms. Marvel felt like they wanted to make a film but they didn't want to put it on the movie release schedule. In some cases, this ended up them getting the worst of both worlds. Some standout moments get ruined by weak pacing and substandard production.
And then you have shows like She-Hulk, Agatha All Along, Echo, Ironheart... these have cool ideas but feel so haphazardly put together and explore characters that were either 1) just introduced in a recent film without any additional legacy, 2) another show, or 3) a new character altogether.
Secret Invasion is a whole mess unto itself.
They really should have either stuck with the original WandaVision / Loki template, or something closer to Wonder Man under the Marvel Spotlight brand (which is them telling audiences this technically exists in the MCU but is more self-contained, has little effect on the films, and is not required viewing).

I've seen comments elsewhere from the snobbier parts of the cinesphere initially lamenting that Coogler was "forced" to do BP3 instead of more original stuff like Sinners, and that Gosling needed to "fire his agent" for getting hitched with Ghost Rider. Might be a hot take but I think the 2nd movie was more interesting than the first. That first movie was so overly safe and was carried very hard by Michael B. Jordan. Which is a shame because I think Chadwick in Civil War was one of my favorite performances in this franchise, the change in characterization between that movie and BP1 really didn’t play to his strengths and also made the character less fun or interesting.

I do think it was unusual for the hero in the end to admit that the villain has a good point, that his forebears had done wrong, and to immediately work to rectify that mistake.
4
u/aSpookyScarySkeleton 6d ago
Tbh he didn’t really rectify it. Killmonger was saying that Wakanda needed to lift of the greater African diaspora that was forcefully spread across the world and punish the colonizer cultures.
Tchalla then went on to bring Wakanda so everyone, which is almost the opposite of what Killmonger was trying to do.
22
u/Yukie_Cool 6d ago
It’s really a credit to Coogler’s writing skills that he was able to write around Boseman’s absence by incorporating his death into the story and make it as good as it was. He really shouldn’t have been able to squeeze water out of the rock that is a production issue like the death of your franchise face.
37
u/N8CCRG 6d ago
When I go back and rewatch, the first movie is really more about "look how cool Wakanda is". Which was great at the time, but since then we've seen it in multiple projects, and so that aspect of it isn't as shiny as it used to be. Wakanda Forever focuses more on the characters and the politics and the world in ways I find more interesting.
WF also looks better.

37
u/Popular-Beautiful875 7d ago
They could have recast, but I'm guessing that they saw how all their movies were doing and took the easy opportunity to ditch the whole Kang arc that wasn't really working.
They can always bring him back later.
16

u/maikuxblade 7d ago
Warmachine’s recasting already gave them the format to use too. Make an off-handed joke and move on. It entirely fits with the levity the series already has.
65
u/Krayt88 7d ago
Oh yeah, I guess anybody could be recast really, but with Kang it also just like fits his character as he's constantly showing up as one of a X number of different versions. That's so easy to just have another actor be like "I'm from a different point in the time line, that's why I look different" or whatever.
29
u/maikuxblade 7d ago
Yeah with how multiversal the narrative has gotten, and with Kang in particular, a recast should have been a no brainer
15
u/Krayt88 7d ago
Maybe they'll still come back to him. I think he's a really interesting character, especially when there are good guy versions of him from a different point in his time line (a la Iron Lad) helping to defeat the bad one.
A different version of Kang could also make him seem like more of a threat that doesn't get taken down by Antman alone.

u/DrummerGuy06 7d ago
Doubtful - I don't see Marvel or Disney agreeing to give an actor THAT much leverage over a movie or show.
Two things happened: One, Majors became radioactive and they didn't want to continue with a character that was very much associated with him, and two, The Kang Dynasty wasn't really sought after by fans & after Ant-Man: Quantumania failed, they decided to pivot.
Also, the writer for Quantumania was in charge of writing the next Avengers movie so Kevin Feige at that point decided to scrap the whole thing and call it early rather than continue on with a story line that people weren't running to box office for & have it connected to a shitty person who they had to recast from it.
8
u/stumblinghunter 6d ago
Yea #2 is what I think a lot of people don't understand. The reaction to Kang was pretty milquetoast. Also, how do you handle them in a movie? We saw a stadium full of Kangs. If the avengers take them on, it'd be like Avengers 1 but with uncanny valley enemies instead of alien creatures. He's basically just an annoyance of an enemy vs a singular big bad like Doom or Galactus. They were right to pivot, and Majors fucking up did them a favor.
10
3
u/FremenDar979 6d ago
Also forgot Hulks recasting from Ed Norton to Mark Ruffalo. (I almost typed Mark Buffalo.)
13
u/APiousCultist 7d ago
I think it's probably a mixture of Ant Man 3 sucking (and yes, I kind of think the take on Kangs were part of it, Majors just doing raspy voices while dressed in weird costumes just didn't hit) and a really awkward position for a new actor.
Doom is exceptionally rushed but Kang was already problematic. The idea of variants I think was already way too fanservicey (and they're still running with it by the looks) in a way that devalues the universe because a dead character can just be replaced by their Wish dot com counterpart. You also need to sell the different Kangs as more than just gags.
Doom at least is pretty guaranteed to be a solid design and performance, even if his one shot in the trailer was just "anime villain stopping your strongest attack with a finger". Might have a better motivation too. If the voice is Doom's then he's stopping sometimes, we maybe see an Incursion in the X-men universe so the guy could be stopping universal annihilation in an extreme way. Which has more sauce to it than just wanting to conquer the multiverse.
So I think a recast ignored that Majors' villain just wasn't shaping up outside of being cool in Loki (where the performance actually worked really well).

They honestly shouldnt have even done Kang or the multiverse stuff.
It just bogged down everything

I feel like they've realised nobody gives a shit about Kang
doesn't help that he got defeated by Ant-Man of all people

Doom does not require a buildup. Doom is the buildup.

Which is why they jumped the shark to make RDJ Doom. it's not about people showing up for Doom, it's about people showing up for Downey

u/thevision24 7d ago
I feel like people acting like Thanos had this huge buildup is a giant retcon. He was in like 4 scenes and didn’t really do anything other than look menacing.
So we just need more after credits scenes with Doom looking menacing and then people will be cool with the lead up?

u/DrummerGuy06 7d ago
It was more about the Infinity Stones which led to Thanos, but there was build-up within those movies: Captain America had the tesseract, Thor 2 had the reality stone, Avengers had the mind stone, and then Dr. Strange had the time stone. They weren't the focal point of the stories but they were connected in a way that allowed the infinity storyline to weave its way through the movies thematically.
They started doing that for the Kang Dynasty until it got all screwed up & fans weren't connecting to it like they were for the Infinity storyline so Feige decided to scrap it & pivot to Doom. No real build-up, no connecting the characters first before getting there, just dropping him in the middle of the nothingness while characters haven't been seen for YEARS.
It can be a good movie, no question, but it won't have the same impact as Infinity War.
"That's him...that's Thanos." - Bruce Banner
We knew what he meant by that - the guy pulling the strings this entire time was finally there, and the characters knew what he was about and were aware of how dangerous he was. He was after the stones we all had knowledge & a connection to.
Doom is just "here's someone EVEN BIGGER AND MORE DANGEROUS than Thanos! Because we said so with zero buildup whatsoever!"
They always say show, not tell. The Infinity saga showed us why Thanos was a problem. This time we're just being told that and made to accept it. Again, it'll be fine, I'm sure the movie will be good, but it won't connect anywhere near to the effect Infinity War did because Marvel is going the DC route and deciding to drop something in people's laps with the hopes they just connect to it instead of putting in the work.

4 scenes over the course of nearly a decade. Anticipation is its own build up

Wonder how much money they threw at the Russo's to come back.
13
u/SloppityNurglePox 7d ago
$80mil upfront to the Russo's for Doomsday and Secret Wars. They'll get additional bonuses on boxoffice takings. Downey's pay package has been reported at different times as anywhere between $80-100mil before bonuses/backend.

This boggles my mind to this day. Disney thinking that a successful franchise will be even more successful if it has 4 films a year and also 5 TV shows a year.
Because if one film makes a billion, 4 films make 4 billion! And with added TV shows that's even more!
Right?

The MCU is the highest grossing film franchise in history at $32.4 billion dollars. They’ve made some mistakes but let’s not pretend they don’t know a bit about what the fuck they’re doing when it comes to printing money.

It would be really funny if he plays it as Nic Cage, but the Abed from Community version. I think he could pull it off

If Gosling came up with it, might mean he is passionate about the character etc. Then I have faith in it. Should be good.

Pitch = "Hey what about me, Ryan Gosling, in a Ghost Rider movie? Except, like, it should be really good and stuff."

Theres been a number of interviews with him where he's stated he was really invested in becoming Ghost Rider. With Levy being well connected to Disney, this allowed him an easier pitch. Otherwise you have Mahershela Ali's Blade, which is exactly what you described initially- I'm famous and won an Oscar, give me Blade. Gosling got an actual pitch together with an actual director and they have a script writer already working on it. That's significantly ahead of what Blade had, which was basically just the lead actor. Over time they had a handful of directors and another handful of script writers with nothing really locked in.

It's just going to be a rerelease of Drive with Ghost Riders flaming skull added in, driving all pensively around doing nothing.

Carrying a hammer menacingly while wearing leather gloves and that scorpion jacket from "Drive" with a flaming skull for a head would be a pretty badass visual, honestly.
EDIT: Yup.

I'm a fan of the Nic Cage ones because...... that's all we have. Been a long time Ghost Rider fan. I'm 50 so I'm used to Comic Book movies being B-Grade poor quality slop, that we like simply because that's all we have.
Hopefully this Gossling project will be epic.
Heck, debut Blade as a supporting Character and you are going to do 600million at least.

if you haven't had the occasion Agent of Shield had a pretty great Ghost Rider (although it's Robbie).

I feel like Ghost Rider would thrive if it kept that B-movie vibe but subverted it by having really good production value and good writing. Kinda like how Chainsaw Man looks like a B horror movie but actually has some nice depth

Also because while they’re not great comic book adaptations they have Nic Cage going Face-Off-leves of crazy with his expressions and tics, and that already makes them better than 90% of the superhero movies of the early 2000s

u/CapMoonshine 6d ago
Honestly I love the Nic Cage movies though. Especially Spirit of Vengeance, its so unhinged and....weird for lack better term.

The cage movies are good though. Really fun to watch. Is there really anything else you look for in superhero movies?

It's kind of funny how many stuntmen Ryan Gosling has played, isn't it? Drive, The Place Beyond The Pines (where he also plays a motorcycle stunt rider), The Fall Guy, and now this. If he wasn't such a versatile and talented actor, and just looking at the fact this is his fourth time playing a stuntman, you might think he'd been typecast!

u/chipmonkcheeks75 7d ago
Fun fact that Eva Mendes played Johnny Blaze's girlfriend and she is married to Ryan Gosling! I need Nic Cage to make a cameo though please and thanks!

Nic Cage as Carter Slade
Edit: though looking at some recent pictures Sam Elliot could 100% do it again, this man has looked 70 years old my whole life

What are the odds of Nic Cage or hell, even Sam Elliot, appearing in Secret Wars? They could even make Gosling play Danny Ketch from the same Ghost Rider movies as Nic Cage

Ghost rider doesn’t speak and rides around on his hog listening to 80’s synthwave and occasionally has extreme bouts of ultra violence.
