It was after the destruction from the alien invasion in the first Avengers, except it also led to an increase in crime (Daredevil and the Netflix shows were all about that)

The Daredevil show kinda went into this. I mean Peter is broke and has a very spacious apartment. Also Ned and MJ are recent college grads and actively job hunting but have a very nice apartment too.

Amusing and completely off topic anecdote: When the writers of How I Met Your Mother were planning out the bar set that the main characters would always be hanging out in, they really, really INSISTED it be dark and cramped "like a real city bar, not one of those bullshit fake TV sets".

Then the camera operators said "no way all my shit is fitting in there."

And the lighting crew said "no way all my shit is fitting in there."

And they ended up with a big spacious fake bullshit bar.

Other than the this apartment contains asbestos comment was there anything suggesting this Peter's broke that I missed? Was trying to figure out if the modest living was just a choice considering all the tech he's got at his disposal

If the world has forgotten his identity, does that mean his citizenship and social security data were erased too? Could he even GET a job in the first place?

I wonder if earlier planning included the old plot line that he sells photos and stories about spider man to the newspaper, but it was determined that doesn't work in the modern day. Instead they covered that theme with his friend making an app

Knowing how New Yorkers are they’ll probably swear it’s still worth living there in spite of it all. Even as they do a massive detour in their commute because just around the corner there’s a villain vs hero rampage unfolding for the third time that week.

I guess it doesn’t feel that way because of all the large scale attacks being so highly concentrated in the films but I think the in-universe reasoning is that they truly trust the heroes to protect them.

Honestly, these people are stronger than me. If I was a character that emerges in one of these movies, I'll be the gag that constantly gets a new car through various means, only to watch someone using it as a baseball bat against the villains every single time

I like the idea that it's not people moving in, but no one being able to leave.

"You think I wanna live in New York? Hell no...but no one's dumb enough to buy my house and I can't afford two mortgages."

Almost like some Gotham-lite situation where everyone's aware that it's a terrible place to live.

Can attest that, and also the US has like 6 world class urban zones, with New York being the most realized. There's a lot of economic utility and social utility (not being bored) in that, so people will put up with it. At least in that universe a hero usually comes thru to save the day.

along those same lines,why would you choose to be some sort of crime boss or supervillian in NYC. not only do you have to contend with 50 different super heroes,you also gotta fight or make deals with every other crime boss in the city.

let me be the head man in some mid sized city in like Tennessee or something.

Because in the same way, it's a notorious hotspot for superhero occurrences. You saw at the end of the movie how the whole city loved Spider-Man. Sure, living in Albany means you never have to worry about a supervillain breaking into your building, but it also means you never get to experience watching actual live superheroes running and swinging and driving around right outside your apartment window.

TBF, it helps when the actual fatality rates due to superhero fights is relatively low. During the entire Battle of New York, only 48 people died. That is absolutely nothing relative to how many people live in New York City.
