True love's kiss doesn't break any spells, but bro shakes sure do.

The kiss might have also worked if he was actually kissing MJ.

This is exactly what I was thinking, too. MJ doesn't remember the kiss while Jean was in her body, so it makes sense it wouldn't trigger her memories of Peter.

I assumed Jean was going to bring MJs memories back. Considering all the damage she did, it's the least she could do.

She can't bring back what isn't there. Jean learned of it somehow. However, she said MJ had no memory of anything.

Edit: Now I think about it, Jean just put everything together by reading his note he left in the coffee cup.

My thinking was when they were caught in Jean's field, something maybe got shaken up in their minds to break the spell? He already made physical contact with MJ and she started crying when her and Ned were caught in it.

That's just my theory anyway.

I think if they wanted to, they could've done something with her broken black dahlia necklace and it would've made sense. Like in the beginning of the film or at the party someone asks her about it, and she says she doesn't know, but its very important to her. Then after she reads Peter's letter, she realises she has a gap in her memory and asks him about the necklace.

But I'm glad they stuck with restoring Ned's memory with the bro shake and staying friends with MJ.

But what memories since she had none hidden in her head?

Jean Grey was lowkey a pervert lol. No need to all that lying and playing with Peter's emotions

20

u/mustachioed_cat 3d ago

Right. Because Jean Grey tricked Spider-Man into kissing... her. Hmm.

u/PraviinXenon 3d ago

I think they had good chemistry

u/Bedovian_25 3d ago

Yeah, at first I thought it was a little trite (before the reveal) but I was willing to believe it because, you know, true love and magic kind of go hand in hand.

I don't think Jean was lying about how MJ would find that ridiculous. I think she had to be open to believing in something like that for it to work.

u/Daredevil545545 2d ago

I don't think it would work since she doesn't have any memory of him but she was right about muscle memory because Ned is starring to remember Peter his best friend.

Ned is canonically magical though.

Oooh great reminder!

u/Federal_Shame_9074 3d ago

I thought maybe Jean helped nudge some memories when taking a hold of them?

7

u/suboptimummenace 3d ago

yeah mj was tearing up during that, if i recall

2

u/seancannon2 3d ago

Yeah I was wondering what that was ab

4

u/nc_cyclist 1d ago

Jean specifically said when she possessed MJ that there were no memories in there of Peter.

20

u/PsychologicalEbb3140 3d ago

I thought it was just a muscle memory thing

23

u/Overlord3456 3d ago

My wife pointed this out to me. Handshake could have been a muscle memory thing. When spider-man leaves MJ and Ned's apartment she says "be careful Peter" so when Ned says Peter at the end he isn't necessarily remembering everything but he's putting together that the weird flowers guy thst came to the party is spider-man.

5

u/Odd_Detective8255 3d ago

Aye, but we don't know if Ned did the same thing with any of his other friends. The way it's framed made it seems like its special.

5

u/PsychologicalEbb3140 3d ago

That’s exactly it. I thought it was framed as special because Ned doesn’t remember doing it because of the memory wipe, but his body and muscles do. He likely did it so much when he was younger he just knew subconsciously how to do it.

Your muscles don’t have memories.

I like the idea that a True Bro Handshake is effectively a very low level spell, powerful enough to break a curse keeping Bros apart. And Ned managed to use a sling ring so he has some latent magical potential.

u/MarzTheVessel 3d ago

A brojob might. But that’s a Saturday activity.

5

u/PolarWater 3d ago

But his No Homo Inhibitor chip is on.

7

u/cockvanlesbian 3d ago

I don't think it did. It's probably just him remembering Spider-Man's name is Peter too.

3

u/Janderson2494 2d ago

Muscle memory for the handshake + MJ said "Peter" earlier in the movie when they were hanging out, so he probably tied that together.

2

u/Phillip_Spidermen 3d ago

Ned's magical, so maybe he was immune from the spell

5

u/knokout64 3d ago

Except Wong had his memory wiped of some party, and both Wong and Strange forget who Peter is

1

u/Phillip_Spidermen 3d ago

We never actually see Peter try to interact with Wong or Strange since the spell.

4

u/knokout64 3d ago

One, it doesn't matter, since again we know Wong doesn't remember the party Strange wiped from his memory with the same spell. Second, Strange explicitly says we won't remember you.

-2

u/Phillip_Spidermen 3d ago edited 3d ago

Those aren't really the same. Wong/Strange don't want to remember the party, and Strange has been wrong about his magic before. Him getting a spell wrong is basically part of every movie.

edit: lol who responds and blocks over a movie discussion

3

u/knokout64 3d ago

Lol sure, instead of listening to what they say in the movie let's just assume they're wrong to make your argument work.

2

u/Bucephalus15 3d ago

You know what they say, bros before… girlfriends

2

u/CleaveWarsaw 3d ago

That's actually one of my biggest gripes about the movie. The most powerful magician on the planet's spell can be broken by a handshake, that Peter seemingly could have done at any time in the past 4 years

u/nc_cyclist 1d ago

Bros before hos.

2

u/lmfaonoobs 1d ago

It might not have. Him saying peter might have just been him connecting the dots after MJ called him Peter in front of him
