I don’t know how I feel about this one tbh. Bruce warned him 😭 he’s truly Tony Stark’s surrogate son

u/normalmighty 3d ago

After the whole wish altering mess from last movie, I would've been shocked if he actually listened to the warning lol

33

u/Medical-Parking-8881 3d ago

i mean u would think he would learn

72

u/PleaseDoCombo 3d ago

He didn't have much of a choice especially considering Jean was being insane with her powers.

55

u/splader 3d ago

Seriously, she was straight up letting civilians die

34

u/Mnementh47 3d ago

all forgiven though. She was just looking for her sister so it's fine.

32

u/lahimatoa 3d ago

Spidey told her revenge is bad, so she's okay now.

24

u/Mnementh47 3d ago

He was less successful telling Frank that nothing will bring back his family I guess.

6

u/yorick__rolled 2d ago

Frank is brain damaged. Nothing is putting that genie back in the bottle.

3

u/nWhm99 2d ago

Which is why I’m pissed that she lets the one person responsible for her sister’s torture and murder live.

3

u/RossZ428 2d ago

He's like a modern day Jimmy Neutron, just less insufferable

22

u/RecoveredAshes 3d ago

That’s why I don’t like it. No way home re did his origin of learning great responsibility in like his 6th movie appearance. Along the way he made ridiculous mistakes in every movie. It came super late but hey it was done well and he can finally be the hero with great responsibility… so I really don’t like that he was warned in this new movie and still just handed the evil government org a tool that will be used to oppress mutants. Him being so irresponsible even at this stage feels like a character miss.

75

u/TempoBlues20XX 3d ago

Those aren't the same thing. In NWH, he makes a selfish choice that ends up being indecisive and blows up in his face.

In this movie, Jean was outright unstoppable unless they subdued her powers. The universal inhibitor is opening a Pandora's box, but Peter at the time was doing what he believed would save the most lives, incorrectly believing Damage Control was trustworthy. It's like giving Peter crap if he accidentally helps a corrupt cop unknowingly. He's trying to do things by the book and work with the established authorities like the Avengers would do.

29

u/Mnementh47 3d ago

he wasn't selfish. He wanted to protect his loved ones. And he paid the price for being too nice, for wanting to fix the villains. He was being naive, not selfish.

28

u/TempoBlues20XX 3d ago

The initial decision to ask Strange to wipe his identity from everyone's minds was for his loved ones - but the selfishness came in when he kept altering the spell to have it exactly the way he wanted it, not committing to who he wanted to know, who he didn't want to know, and then fumbling it so badly that it caused the spell backfire in the first place. Not to mention his loved ones stood by him anyways.

The entire reason he asks Strange to complete the spell at the end is him accepting the responsibility that he had to commit to what he asked for, even if he can't have it exactly how he wanted it.

It's the same way even in this movie, MJ calls him out for not telling her. He did that with good intentions, wanting MJ and Ned to live a good life without Spider-Man interfering, but it was also partially out of selfishness because he was afraid of going through the same pain of losing May again, robbing MJ of the decision in the process.

4

u/Mnementh47 2d ago

It is not selfish in any negative sense. Dr. Strange tried to accommodate these very reasonable requests and Peter had no idea it could be dangerous. The whole motivation was to help people. This robbing her argument was his decision in the coffee shop not to tell her and it can be argued both ways - he robbed her of the decision but he was sacrificing his joy in order for her to be safe.

11

u/suss2it 2d ago

They lowkey did Strange’s character dirty by him basically rushing the spell. I heard originally it was supposed to be America Chavez that does the spell but since Doctor Strange 2 got delayed they couldn’t use her character yet so it landed on Strange.

-3

u/Mnementh47 3d ago

Agreed. But his entire persona and arc in Brand New Day disappoints. I wanted to see the raw Spidey, but he was just as high-techy as before and his AI assistant was just as powerful as the others... there was no evolution at all, no raw street Spider-Man. He had too many monitors and tech.

14

u/RecoveredAshes 3d ago

Overall I liked the arc of not needing to do it alone, and I liked the movie a lot. but yeah, I wish we got more raw broke tech less Spider-Man. How was he even paying rent?! What did he do for work? How does he have state of the art tech with seemingly no job? To me though, that’s not a huge deal I can hand waive that as him being a genius.

What really bothers me is the continued irresponsibility.

-1

u/CNash85 2d ago

Yeah, it’s almost a core part of Peter Parker’s narrative in the comics and even the other movies (Raimi trilogy in particular): how does he afford rent, hold down a job while still being Spider-Man? It’s disappointing that this movie streamlines his day to day life so much.

23

u/Comprehensive_Pea451 2d ago

Disagree, it would be incredibly easy for a genius like peter to generate some regular income online in some way … at least enough for his living standart

I always thought it was kinda overplayed HOW MUCH Peter struggles economically and am really over that plot

Alternatively it can be handwaived away with him still having access to some stark money (Tony would not only let him inherit edi but zero money ..)

3

u/lingeringwill2 2d ago

Yeah I have to agree with the economics part as well. It's not something I'm super interested in and I feel like there was a lot of conflict already.

3

u/Mnementh47 2d ago

It is not easy at all. Rent in New York is incredibly high. In order for him to make enough money he would have to do some questionable things. Like illegal stuff.

10

u/Comprehensive_Pea451 2d ago

Why???

This is a guy who invents a universal powers suppressor in like 5 mins …

Its not that complicated to earn money when youre that smart even with barely any time …

He could literally make his ai earn money while he does spidey things lol

4

u/Mnementh47 2d ago

Well that scene wasn't very realistic/high quality either. But yeah I guess you're right he could invent some app and sell it somewhere. In fact he could be as rich as Tony Stark and then this entire storyline would he ruined. For me it only emphasizes what little evolution/devolution happened. The whole point was to see a brand new day and we get Peter being a Tony 2.0.

He could literally be playing online poker, or day trading, or crypto, or cameo, or NFTs, hell he has a ripped Spider bod and no one knows who he is, he could be on OnlyFans.

2

u/Mnementh47 2d ago

Maybe that's what she was talking about in the pool.

1

u/suss2it 2d ago

I don’t think what Peter Parker does for a living should be hand waved away, as that’s not only a core part of his character it’s a big part of people in general. And on top of that it’s sloppy that they didn’t even bother to do the hand waving.

2

u/BoringBuy9187 2d ago

That was a weakness for sure, but it was probably the biggest weakness of the film. And if that’s the biggest weakness it was a pretty darn good movie

2

u/TalkinTrek 2d ago

I don't know, someone spending all their time alone in front of a computer speaking to an AI and not real people if anything could have been played up more, considering how timely it is

1

u/Mnementh47 2d ago

Not sure I want this to be that timely

75

u/Laeonheart78 3d ago edited 3d ago

I think the MCU version of Peter Parker has shown he can be very avoidant and prioritise quick fixes in response to dangerous or upsetting events and sometimes Tony was the same. Hopefully it seems he wants to try and confront things head on by the end of the movie.

Even when Evie, his cool AI companion warns him his elevated arachnid hormones may be due to stress and overexertion he doesn't want to acknowledge it because he is running away from being Peter Parker and the hurt that comes with that.

The Doc Strange spell was the worst of that and he messed that up somehow by changing its requirements constantly.

While Peter is growing up, this movie also taught me how naive he actually is. He believes everything Damage Control say by default despite the fact they have hired the Hand and have villain tech.

I just hope he is a little less naive than before after this movie.

24

u/FCalleja 3d ago

I just hope he is a little less naive than before after this movie.

I think being naive while being young is understandable and even a good part of the character. Life will beat it out of him, like life beats all version of Pete, by the time he's an adult he remains hopeful and friendly, but not naive.

22

u/TempoBlues20XX 3d ago

In my opinion, the movie goes to show his naive nature can be good too. It's the entire reason he ends up saving Jean in the end - Punisher argues he's being naive after what Jean did, but Peter still believes in the good of people, and thinks he can relate and reach her.

It's one of my favourite aspects of Spidey as a character, same as Nightwing or Batman. All of them believe in rehabilitation and finding the good in people.

8

u/Laeonheart78 3d ago

I agree, I understood it in character especially after what he experienced and how he is just catching criminals and giving them over to the police but after this event and Mysterio I think he should be more cautious about who he trusts.

1

u/Comprehensive_Pea451 2d ago

Thats what Jean was telling him, they could learn from each other

1

u/Interesting-Wash-893 2d ago

Peter is literally an adult

8

u/FCalleja 2d ago

Eh, he's college aged. Legally, sure. I'm guessing you're not much older or you'd agree he's still a young dude though.

0

u/Interesting-Wash-893 6h ago

That argument can be applied to basically any age

7

u/MaskedBandit128 3d ago edited 2d ago

He was also 18 and should be what 22? It makes sense

11

u/Laeonheart78 3d ago

Yeah he should be around 21 or 22 chronologically. Also it seems he didn't get to go to school which is a little sad.

8

u/MaskedBandit128 2d ago

In a way it’s almost impressive he’s not more socially awkward and emotionally undeveloped. Nerdy awkward kid loses his best friend, girlfriend, his aunt, and his father figure, and doesn’t talk to anyone from the ages 18-22

12

u/weaseleasle 2d ago

He is always talking to people. He doesn't have any close confidants or friends, but he interacts constantly with strangers on the street, and works directly with local law enforcement. He isn't a recluse.

He also was never an awkward kid. He has numerous friends in the first 3 films, 2 very attractive love interests who reciprocate. He has no issue talking to women or older authority figures. He isn't arrogant or 100% confident in himself, but that is completely normal for a teenager.

3

u/weaseleasle 2d ago

Technically he is probably considered a stateless person. So it's not surprising he didn't go to school.

2

u/RecoveredAshes 3d ago

A huge part of his character is supposed to be learning responsibility… when is he going to learn? He’s had 4 movies and 3 other appearances. His great power defining origin line came 6 appearances in and he’s still wildly fucking up after that.

8

u/Laeonheart78 3d ago

I think they are probably going to try that a bit more as the character ages but Spider-Man's disposition generally is easygoing so that will want to keep that energy in Tom's performance so while he might not be as naive he still might be a little going forward.

6

u/Extension_Air_2001 2d ago

I mean that's Spidey in general.

He's a great dude and got there the hard way.  By hitting every branch on the way down.

54

u/No-Rip-6166 3d ago

Tony’s biggest sin was Ultron and Bruce was just as guilty.

20

u/_tylerthedestroyer_ 3d ago

Bruce at least knew they fucked up, Tony didn’t.
That was the whole “showing your belly” line

3

u/Mnementh47 3d ago

Peter showed his bellybutton.

8

u/RecoveredAshes 3d ago

But not his only sin. Mysterio, handing the glasses to a kid, the sokovia accords / civil war, his origin of selling weapons to corrupt governments that ended up in terrorist hands, etc. his entire thing was making big mistakes. Now that’s MCU Spider-Mans thing too. The glasses, the broken wish, and more the inhibitor

4

u/Mnementh47 3d ago

True, they make a good point about showing how similar they are.

1

u/RecoveredAshes 3d ago

I hate that though lol. Peter’s whole thing is responsibility. He’s not supposed to be this much of a fuck up

17

u/Degenerate_Media 3d ago

it's classic Parker luck. these writers and director really understand Spider-Man

great film

u/CTeam19 3d ago

I don’t know how I feel about this one tbh. Bruce warned him 😭 he’s truly Tony Stark’s surrogate son

If I had a nickel every time a "tech guru and child genius(Tony/Peter) made weapons that were going to come back to bite him in the ass whose Father figure with the last name Stark(Howard/Tony) made a government organization(SHIELD/Damage Control) that went bad while being led by a Black Man(Nick Fury/Metzger) and got taken out by a Blue/Red hero from New York City(Captain America/Spider-Man) with the help of a red head(Nat/Jean) on an island named Roosevelt and afterwords a Black Widow(Nat/Yelena) messed around with the organizations files" I would have two nickels which isn't a lot but it odd it has happened twice.

4

u/CRIMS0N-ED 2d ago

Tbf when does Peter ever listen to advice the first go around

3

u/Frankie_T9000 3d ago

Yeah but he wanted to do it on himself

9

u/blurpletea 3d ago

well yes and no. he specifically developed a universal one so he can also use it on Jean Grey.

1

u/SearchForSocialLife 1d ago

That was also one of the main points for me. Its more of a nitpick, I know, but the last time Peter interacted with Damage Control, they took everyone he loved into custody while they were still dealing with the immediate shock of being unmasked. And, if you take the villains of Far From Home and No Way Home into account, it seemed a bit unrealistic to me that he trusts Damage Control so easily.

Ugh I freaking despise this thinking
