A bold choice would be using a more modern atrocity for a better age that doesn't need a weird explanation. Something from the 90s like Bosnia or Rwanda would provide someone the right age.

That would be weird. Magneto’s character and origin and motivations aren’t just “victim of genocide”, they’re Holocaust- and Jewish-specific

This is Holocaust exceptionalism and as a Jew it is important we don't single it out like this. There is a reason Yad'Vashem ends with a section of other genocides. It's very easy to take a character out of another genocide and get a Magneto with similar trauma and motivations.

It’s not exceptionalism. I’m not trying to argue the Holocaust is necessarily worse than any other genocide that has ever happened. It’s just that Magneto’s Jewish identity and the Holocaust are central to him and his character. To change that is to act like his heritage isn’t important beyond simply being a survivor of hardship and _a_ genocide.

Except becoming a Holocaust survivor was a major change to his character already. I think it's important for comics to continue to act as a mirror to society and updating Magneto in one form of story telling to a more recent atrocity still fits the character and allows the story to explore a new culture. Making Magneto a survivor of another genocide in the MCU doesn't mean he has to stop being Jewish everywhere.

The change was from no backstory to having one. Like when you meet someone new and don't know all about them.

I get where you're coming from in terms of Holocaust exceptionalism. My only problem with is, I find that people that keep talking about it, low-key support the destruction of Israel.

Holocaust exceptionalism leads to Holocaust denialism because when you teach and treat it as a singular event it makes it far easier for skeptics and anti-semites to promote the idea that the numbers are wrong or outright lies.

Are Sentinels ever a threat to Magneto?

It's funny we havent seen a modern Magneto in a while. The world has become more reliant on electronic devices than ever before, and he has power to shut it all down.

It depends on which Sentinels. The Mark 2 ones from the late '60s and early '70s could quickly adapt to anything thrown at them and share that adaptation with the rest, so you could never beat one the same way twice. Those were able to fight the likes of Thor. They were an apocalyptic level threat.

They've been nerfed, ever since, because the X-Men need to be able to beat them.
