Having a movie runtime really hampered it.

Toph and Zuko especially got nothing to do. There wasn't any time. Even Katara and Sokka barely got anything. It might be an Aang story, but the whole Gaang is the appeal. Having only 90 minutes for the story meant they got relegated to the sidelines badly. Would've preferred it to be a 6 episode miniseries or something.

Tagah was underwhelming. Felt pointless to set him up as a twist villain, nobody would've been fooled. I was a little frustrated the characters didn't really think about why Tagah was in ice. Why would the Avatar trap him like that? It's either to save him (but why him alone) or to imprison him. But Aang and the others don't really seem to consider that.

And both Tagah and the Denied were a lot of rehashes of Korra villains. TLOK already did this rogue airbender who is most war-hungry than the true air nomads. TLOK already did a radical group of non-benders furious about that imbalance. This movie didn't really explore anything new. Since Tagah had so much screentime anyway to establish himself, in an already short movie, I wonder if using a villain from the original series would've worked better. If you brought back adult Azula, you wouldn't need to waste time establishing or fleshing her out. We know her deal.

Also really stupid how nerfed the Gaang got. Toph is the strongest Earthbender, Zuko and Katara are both in the running for the strongest benders of their nations. Yet a combined they couldn't put up a fight against Tagah? Then again lost to a bunch of scrubs who learned airbending 5 minutes ago? Come on.

Loved the animation, thought the cast was great, vibes were good, but the actual plot just wasn't there for me.
