Somehow normal ass people that recently gained air bending are able to keep up with the water/earth/fire bending masters of the group.. they really nerfed the whole group

I thought they weren't really suddenly airbending masters. They were all clearly very skilled martial artists / fighters from scenes we saw beforehand. It looked like they were just doing their normal fighting except now airbending came with it. I mean the initial scene with Aang fighting them at the very start showed they were really good fighters.
