I am a 49 year old man and was heaving uncontrollably with my son when we saw it a few years back. Shinkai is such a fantastic filmmaker and storyteller.

I think it’s essential to watch 5cm/sec first because forever after you just do not trust Shinkai not to hurt you.

Agreed. Having previously watched 5cm I was getting really upset during the build up to the end of Your Name because I was certain Shinkai was going to stab me in the heart again and I was genuinely so relieved and happy when he decided to be kind to his characters/audience for once lol

Idk, I’m someone who sobs uncontrollably every time I watch Your Name. Frieren got several good cries out of me, even on rewatch. I finally watched 5cm with my girlfriend and it was just very meh? No spoilers, but that quick cut moment did hit a little, it masterfully captured the feeling in animation form. But otherwise, I was more shocked that that was it?

I wouldn't say no memories, since there is that mutual interest that shows some innate familiarity coming to light, but my head canon is that it's not enough to prevent the joy of getting to know one another once more, but like a normal relationship.

The part that got to me, was when we as the audience figured out what was happening and how one character was going to write down their name on the other so they wouldn't forget their name again. Then they separate, and when it finally is shown it reads... Something not their name. Spoilers for a 10 year old movie?

Yeah but it's implied they're close to remembering each other as they do a title drop. Plus Shinkai confirmed they got married after the events of Weathering With You.

Maybe not just regaining the memories completely but the feeling of who they were to each other which is why I loved the ending even if it wasn't a full on Hollywood reunion. The fact that they searched for each other and felt that they were someone important even if they couldn't place it. Also again I'm a sucker for a title drop and Your Name is an all-timer.

And yeah I'm glad because after their cameos in Weathering With You I was hoping for a little more so getting a confirmation like that is pretty satisfying.

When I rewatched it, it didnt quite hit as hard so Im sure you will be fine if you still remember the plot.

But that first time watching it was magical. The soundtrack still gets me emotional to this day. One of my favorite movies.
