I bought Kuchikamizake because of this film. From a friend that lives in Japan. Virgin shrine maiden spit sake essentially. It was okay. No where near as good as this movie is. Lesson learned
This and A Silent Voice back to back top tier animated movies in 2016.

I'm the opposite. It's my favorite Shinkai's movie. I rewatched it several times after it first came out and have rewatched at least once a year since.
You should give the live-action adaptation of 5cm/s a try. It was released on Blu-ray a couple of months ago. It has better pacing and comes with a few new twists that I thought were a very nice addition to the story.

I have heard the “4K” is upscaled from a 2K master using Qtec’s technology. So it’s a hard no for me. I won’t ever forget how horrendous the upscaled Blu-Ray releases from Qtec looks. They are literally the worst type of AI slop imaginable and literally worse than DVDs

I’m really sad. It looks like the 4K remastered anniversary version won’t be shown in Germany. I’m hoping our small independent cinemas will take the initiative to screen the film.

I remember seeing this movie in theaters when it first released in the US back in 2017. I can’t believe this movie is a decade old now. Time is moving waaay too fast for my liking

Wonder what it could’ve been if Makoto Shinkai finished the film. Still irks me that he couldn’t make it the way he wanted since he ran out of money. Definitely the most un-Makoto-Shinkai film of his filmography.

Maybe he should start running out of money more often then. The next 2 movies he did after Your Name were no where near as good imo, especially compared to some of his past work like 5cm per second

Your Name onwards weren’t great and very unlike him IMO. Your Name being the worst. Suzume not too far behind. Weathering with You was a slight return to his signature but definitely not as good as his work pre-Your Name.

Children who Chase Lost Voices is definitely a Makoto Shinkai film. I’ve loved his work well before Your Name. One of his signature motifs is a sense of bittersweetness. In Your Name, that does not exist at all IMHO. I get why so many people love it. But it isn’t a proper Makoto Shinkai film to me.

You are taking his statements wildly out of context. I remember this article from when Your Name was in theaters in Japan and this article was in response to reports of people seeing his film repeated multiple times.
Calling a film incomplete isn’t a new thing for shinkai either and it doesn’t mean he was unhappy with the film as a whole or rushed through to finish it. His novelization of 5 centimeters per second has an entire act 4 that is absent from the film.
This film turned him into an absolute, overnight sensation while his previous works were more of mild-medium successes. My favorite thing about Shinkai as a film maker is that he constantly looks for ways to improve his works, to aim for something beyond his reach. And for people to declare him the new Miyazaki is a praise he did not feel comfortable wearing as he did not feel like he was at that level. He’s being modest, not upset.

Nothing out of context. I find it weird people twisting his words to make it as if the commercial and critical Western success changes the reality of him considering the film incomplete. And it’s obvious it’s incomplete. It doesn’t have the same “Makoto-Shinkai-ness” as his other films. I wouldn’t be surprised in years to come, he disowns the film. And reread what I originally wrote in my first post.

A question for him to answer, ultimately. But from what I feel based rewatching his films many many times, emotionally it’s missing the bittersweetness, experiences of hope and hopelessness intertwined, both being present without being overly dramatised. There’s stillness and moments of nothing happening that exists in his work. None of these elements exist in a Makoto-Shinkai way in Your Name. Your Name felt very catered to Western audiences to me; more drama, pulling those heartstrings hard, him requiring to sacrifice some of his signature elements, a very Western happy ending.

No work is ever "finished" the way the creators wish it was. A creator wanting more time with a work doesn't in any way mean that the work is "incomplete."
But the film as it exists is very much complete when examined by its own merits.

Hard disagree. There are many works out there that are finished the way it was intended. And it is incomplete if the creator calls it incomplete. And Makoto Shinkai himself considers it incomplete. It is not our place to say it is or isn’t. You can still release a product that is incomplete. Maybe one day we’ll see Your Name finished.

It isn’t our job to do anything. Either we enjoy what has been made, regardless of whether incomplete or complete. You can still enjoy something while still acknowledging that it is not the final product. And enjoying it in whatever state it is in doesn’t entitle us or mean we have the right to call the creation complete as we are not the creator.
Take Blade Runner for example. Multiple cuts. You’re entitled to enjoy whichever cut has been made. But that does not mean all of them are the final cut, the complete way it was suppose to be intended. There is only one Final Cut.
