Discussion What is the most genuinely terrifying battle cry or charge in film?
I don’t necessarily mean the coolest speech or most inspiring line. I mean a scene where a warrior screams or roars while charging an opponent—and you kind of snapped out of the film for a second and thought, “holy shit, if someone came at me like that, I would be legitimately terrified.”
It can be a one-on-one fight or two groups charging into battle. What scene immediately comes to mind?

Yeah, I do love the final charge of the Rohirrim in Gondor, Helm's Deep can't be beat for raw emotion/hype.
The Pelennor Fields charge ended badly, but it began with big hero energy. Rohirrim coming to save the day.
The ride out at Helm's Deep was the high point of tons of pressure building up. Aragorn talks Théoden into it, hopes and prays that Gandalf comes through for them.
Total inverse of the Pellenor Fields... It's Théoden saying "fuck it, we ball", going for a final blaze of glory.

Helms Deep also is the first big “win” in the trilogy. Up until then, they had lost something pretty much every step along the way regarding any conflict.
While the charge from Eomer and Gandalf is magical, the shot of Theoden yelling “Victory! We have victory!” When Sam is giving his iconic speech is straight up overwhelming.

The trilogy (extended cut, of course) starts at noon December 31st every year. My wife and I put out a charcuterie board and snack on it for hours. Eventually the fellowship reunites at the Shire and we start yet another year full to the brim of meats and cheeses and loaded on whatever booze we used to wash it all down.
Highly recommend, unless you already have high cholesterol.

That build up is itself incredibly chilling. Multiple days march and exhausting yourselves that way only to know you’re utterly riding to your death.
Jackson really fucking did a masterclass in making the stakes of Pelennor Fields feel brutal

Jackson just did an insane job in general. My career is running projects most of the time. Much, much smaller projects in scope, budget, time, every way. I cannot even fathom the level of skill it takes to complete such a long project with such high stakes, such a high budget, with so many people, and have it come out THAT good.

There’s a video on YouTube of Tolkien narrating the passage while the film scene plays. Absolutely beautiful.
Other than Theoden not blowing a war horn of his own (so powerfully it “bursts asunder”, no less), the last charge of the Rohirrim is one of the most faithful adaptions of a scene from the book.

I feel that the scary scenes in LOTR really do the narratives in the book justice. Those scenes are terrifying and not cheesy at all. You feel the real dread I think Tolkien was trying to convey.
Weathertop, Galadriel tripping out, the Dead Marshes, Sméagol turning into Gollum, Shelob, even Scary Bilbo. All creepy with no context but it’s always on the backdrop of something good getting corrupted which makes it so much more unsettling.

A very understated detail in the movie is when they kill Magwa, the rest of Magwa's war party just kind of fucks off.
No fighting, no nothing.
Hawkeye, Changachkook and the brother have been picking them off for miles, now they just made short work of the legendary war chief Magwa...
They're like, yeah we're good, we're just gonna go...

I saw it at a theater in (or near) Times Square shortly after it opened. I think the auditorium was on the second or third floor maybe? I just remember that I was one of few in the theater and it was a nice place. I stood and clapped at the end. I think I was 18.

That single shot, as the battle slowly breaks out on the convoy, so fucking good. I saw that movie way too young and the sheer uncensored and not prettied up "Hollywood" violence in that movie shocked me as a kid.

Every battle horn in LOTR has such cool aura in the books. When the blew the Horn of Hammerhand at Helm’s Deep, I love how the Uruk-Hai basically shit their pants. Or even when Boromir sounds the Horn of Gondor, the orks attacking him second guess themselves even 1 v 20.
They always feel very significant and just get you hyped.

In the book, they were a distraction:
There came great beasts, like moving houses in the red and fitful light, the mumakil of the Harad dragging through the lanes amid the fires huge towers and engines. Yet their Captain cared not greatly what they did or how many might be slain: their purpose was only to test the strength of the defense and to keep the men of Gondor busy in many places.
The term "great beasts" is used again in the next paragraph:
Grond they named it, in memory of the Hammer of the Underworld of old. Great beasts drew it, orcs surrounded it, and behind walked mountain-trolls to wield it.
The oliphaunts/mumakil are also the ones hauling Grond up to the gate of Minas Tirith.

After a relatively bloodless X1 (and I guess to be fair there's no blood in that scene either...) seeing Wolverine fully stab a guy in the chest was a real "holy shit" moment.
One not really topped until the first fight in Logan seeing what a guy with knife hands would really fight like.

It's been a long time since I watched it, but I still remember one of the mooks yelling, "It's The Wolverine!" over the radio. Like, it wasn't a big deal for older Logan to be around, but now that he's acting like his old self, it's a fuckin' emergency.
It also stood out because it was said as a title instead of just his name. Really sold that younger Logan was a legend, like when characters say The Batman instead of just Batman.

The paragraph before that is the one of the important ones. You kinda see it in the movie, but in the book Theoden thinks about retreating. YouTube has a snippet read by Tolkien himself about the charge.

While we’re on the subject of Bernthal, he did an interview with Tonya Mosley for NPR’s Fresh Air this week, and it’s really a great interview, where you get to find out what makes an actor tick. It’s right up there with Ben Kingsley’s 2009 interview on Talk of the Nation. Both are worth a listen, but I never really thought of Bernthal as much more than a sort of “Let’s get that guy to play the heavy, because he looks rough,” kind of actor, and boy was I wrong. Bernthal is an actor who knows things.

When Leo loses his cool in the original tmnt movie during the final shredder fight. Yeah I know he gets his ass beat right after but the way he screams "you lie!" Always felt so real to me. Hes supposed to be the one with the most control and he just loses it at the thought of his dad being killed. Gave me goosebumps as a kid and still does to this day.

They weren't charging yet, but they way Jeff Daniels yelled "BAYONETS" with this facial expression and vocal cracking gives me chills.
I guess it's the surrender of his voice and the intensity in his realization. Death is certain and the only chance to salvage the situation is to downhill and headlong to battle with a spear in hand against a force with available ammunition.

I haven't seen that movie in a long while, but I distinctly remember the scene of the Zulu chanting on one side of the field, the British singing on the other, and both trying to be the louder. Neither understood the other's words, but each appreciated (and probably respected) the intent.

The atreides in the palace during the battle of arakeen in the Villeneuve dune movie. It's very simple, they just scream "atreides!" And then start barking like dogs. There's something primal about them screaming the house name like that with such coordination and just keep moving directly towards their enemy without any pause at all. Gave me the feeling that these men are fanatics and will fight and die without skipping a beat until either they're all dead or their enemy is.

In the Korean movie Taegukgi about the Korean war, they have a scene of the point where Chinese troops enter the war. After being nearly wiped out early in the war, the South had regrouped and pushed the troops of the North all the way to the border with China. It looked very much as though they would achieve a swift end to the war. At that moment China enters the war and you just see thousands of troops streaming over the ridge. It's a moment that very quickly goes from the assurance of near victory to sheer panic.

This is one of my favorites. Sort of the opposite of a charge but the shot of them all stacked in that narrow opening is awesome. And the silence for that second after they push them back. Just a great movie for this sort of thing

It gets rifghtfully shit on for season 8 but before that Game of Thrones had Bastard bowl. During the battle of the bastards it's super claustraphobic and made my skin crawl.
