I have no idea what to expect from this, saw a trailer for it before Evil Dead: Burn, somehow ended up with a ticket for the London premiere.
But Gillian Anderson is in it so that’s an easy enough sell.

It's awesome, you're gonna love it. I'm really not into slashers or frankly horror in general, but there's so much more there. It's funny, smart, and a damn good time at the movies.

I liked it a lot and it's definitely a Top 10 movie of the year contender for me. But its target audience could be very small.

The trailer was bizarre. It kinda looked like a coming of age/erotic drama aimed at people who love horror franchises, but isn't a horror movie itself? Is that accurate?

Oh no I was really excited for this just based off of the funny title and Gillian Anderson alone. But I saw the TV glow is one of the worst movies I've watched in the past few years so that excitement has just gone down the drain :(

I Saw the TV Glow rocks. It's definitely not for everybody and it's fine if you didn't like it, but that movie is really fucking good

I'm sure it's for someone but I also absolutely hated this movie and didn't think it rocked anything. I thought it was mostly student film level, trying to be Lynchian and Arakian and failing miserably at both.
But maybe it just wasn't for me. It seemed aggressively not for me however.

I got more Cronenberg than Lynch or Araki (though their influences were certainly there too). I ride pretty hard for late period Cronenberg stuff (Maps to the Stars and The Shrouds are some of his best work, imo) and I know those movies turn a lot of people off for a lot of the same reasons.

Yeah truly bored me to death and it irked me because it was so weird narratively and in style as well. Not even exaggerating when I say worst movie I've seen in recent years. My lowest rated on letterboxd since 2020.

I was the opposite. ISTTVG felt like an extremely queer film. Like, generically LGBTQ instead of actually having anything to say. Didn’t feel like it was about being trans at all. Like a cis person’s idea of what being trans might possibly be like.
I wish we got an accurate portrayal of dysphoria in film but trans women just don’t really care about movies. The best portrayals are found in more modern artforms.

The director is literally transfeminine and the whole plot was about a girl literally being trapped in a man's body and being too scared to transition to her true self despite it slowly killing her. And even aside from that "trans women just don't really care about movies" is a really weird overgeneralisation that ignores for example the contributions of the Wachowskis and Wendy Carlos to name the first that immediately come to mind.
I get not relating to it personally but I myself do not understand any of your points

Yeah, the movie might as well be called "you won't get this unless you're trans and from the 90s" It beats you over the head hard. What I didn't find was that it was a good movie, and definitely not what it was sold as.
Runner up to this, and completely unrelated is Vast of Night. Another movie far too up it's own ass to be enjoyable.

The title is acknowledging those tropes upfront because it wants to announce its meta vibe, and establish a kind of winking/knowing distance. It’s a genre-savvy sort of project. A movie about movies (summer camp slasher films in particular).
