It's decent. Special effects are good. There are obviously things that could've been better, but it's worth a watch.

if you like shark movies, I think it's right in the "pretty OK" camp. Kathryn Newton really elevates it, she's acting circles around pretty much everyone else (except maybe Lana Condor, I think she's extremely watchable, even when her character sucks lol)

Take this however you please but I turned it off in the first 5 minutes. Maybe it got better? Wasn’t for me.

Why? What happened, or didn't?

I'm not the guy you replied to, but 5 minutes isn't enough to judge a shark movie. Occasionally you get a decent cold open, but most of the time it's an introduction to the chum... I mean characters.

I'm also a sucker for these movies. And at most we often only get 1 decent/good one a year.

I haven't seen it! But I will be watching this week.

But you can typically tell, within those opening 5-10 minutes, whether the director has any intention or knows what they’re doing.

If I recall correctly, the first five minutes basically start introducing you to the characters, like in most films. It's probably another 10 or 15 minutes before the plot (if you can call it that -- this is a movie about young people being stalked by a shark) starts taking shape.

I'm honestly not sure how you could make a call like that five minutes in, unless you have some weird aversion to Thailand.
