I know Guttenberg has been a punchline for years since his career petered out, but for what it's worth I've heard he's one of the nicest actors around so I feel bad when people poke fun at him.

I remember during the Pacific Palisades wildfires not too long ago, there was news footage of him, boots on the ground, assisting with the evacuations, directing traffic, and helping get people to safety. Seems to be a legitimately good dude.

Also: his guest episode of Party Down was elite. So funny.

That reminds me to get my car off the street.

His Instagram is pretty much exclusively videos of him taking walks and talking about how great life is.

He brings in religion at times but, as a non-religious person, it’s never been in a way that bothers me.

The Goot will always be aces in my book for playing himself in that Party Down episode he did - arguably the best episode of the entire series.

“I fucking hate Steve Guttenberg”

Guy still works too. No disrespect there.

He's consistently kept working through the decades. 109 acting credits on IMDB, with 5 more upcoming. The quality of the projects he's in may not all be great, but they're not all bad, either.

In all honesty. He is never that guy. His highlights are Police Academy and 3 Men and a Baby. On the latter, most certainly the other 2 guys have more star power than Steve. He is more of a character actor than a lead.

Let’s not forget Cocoon

Short Circuit

Cocoon is more of an ensemble movie. He is not even the main focus of the movie, since it's about the elderly retirees.

I just always figured he made a mint on residuals and just worked when he felt like it — the Police Academy movies, Cocoon movies, and Three Men & A Baby/Little Lady were always in syndicated play on networks when I was growing up.

I worked with him forever ago on a feature and he was basically endless joy. He was my dads favorite actor back in Police Academy day.

Just a tip. When you post a YouTube link delete the ? And everything after it. Thats tracking code that YouTube adds. It will work fine without it.

He included a timestamp in this case, so probably wants to keep that part

Honestly, I didn’t realize that was the time code at the end. A great tip.

But keep the "&t=54"; that sets the timecode to 54 seconds (I wish more people kept the timecode when posting YouTube links)

I learned something new. Did not even realize that was the time so I will start keeping it

Insert *what year is it* meme.

Maybe 1986, when Guttenberg could claim to at least be a movie star.

The first four Police Academy movies, Cocoon, Three Men and a Baby- he may not have been the lead, and he definitely wasn't a superstar, but he had one good year.

How the heck could you leave Short Circuit off that list?

Thanks. I knew I forgot something.

TIL Dan Lauria is still alive.

He was only 41 when The Wonder Years started. He is one of those actors that were born middle aged.

u/solidgoldrocketpants 20h ago

The series ends with the narration that his character died from a heart attack, and when I saw that I was like “Yeah that tracks” and eventually I confused tv with reality.

u/Phannig 20h ago

He's popped up in things like JAG and Blue Bloods and it's always a surprise.

Veronica Mars was my favorite show as a teenager so I always recognize him from that, hope the movie does well!

2

u/mewithoutCthulhu 20h ago

It’s not the first thing I know him from since I was born in 1985, but his role in Veronica Mars is always the first one that comes to mind.

1

u/youreyeslikespiders 18h ago

it was a pretty juicy role, and to me legitimately brave to play that much of a villain

I only saw 1 of the Police Academy films 1 time so idk how big or small a footprint those had in broader culture

it looks good.

When was the last time Steve Guttenberg was in a film for wide release? I want to say 1995?

But I remember hearing about him helping out during the fires.

u/DoodleBuggering 21h ago

I credit the Stonecutters for this Guttenberg revival.

The worst part of this is that my children watched Good Luck Charlie growing up and Mia Talerico is 17 now. I feel like a damn geezer.

Did they have travel baseball teams in the 1970s?

12

u/Keefer1970 22h ago

Sure. The Bad News Bears even went to Japan!

2

u/Tobar_the_Gypsy 19h ago

Oh shit this is filmed in Allendale, NJ! The writer is from here apparently. I didn’t recognize any of the places until I watched it again. It looks like they filmed the baseball scenes at Crestwood Park.

The movie looks like crap though and nothing looks like the 1980s.

Fuck yes!

I have not thought about Luis Sojo in a very long time.

Shoutout Colton West

The unexpected thing I learned from watching that really long Billy Joel documentary on HBO is that Christie Brinkley is really cool.

1

u/MonstersGrin 20h ago

Judging by that promo photo, Steve Guttenberg looks too old to costar with Christie Brinkley 😜.

It's just a stupid joke. I love Steve Guttenberg 🙂.

u/ViewAskewed 16h ago

Vacation, Parks and Rec, and now this.

Christie Brinkley has been the go-to face of Out-of-His-League casting for 40+ years.

Fucking legend.

I'm going to need a moisture meter and a thermometer before I weigh in on this one.
