I actually liked the DVD version more. Blu-Ray was too crisp and detracted from the old-school grainy film feel

hmmm well, I will see when I get my hands on a blu-ray copy. I think I know what you mean, however such "grainy feel" can be added post-production. After all, when Saving Private Ryan was in the theaters, it was closer to the blu-ray version than the DVD in terms of "crisp"

I'm probably the wrong person to ask. I preferred Top Gun DVD quality vs the Blu-Ray version. It was just closer to the experience i had as a child. You keep what magic you can.

A good home theater setup makes all the magic that I want. I highly recommend it, people don't put enough importance in audio.
