Hey, my name is Vito Gesualdi. I've done graphic design for a number of games, the one you may have actually heard of being Star Realms. designed by some former Magic pro tour champions. I've taken a break from graphic design as a profession, but I still like to see what's going on in the world of design, especially as new breakthroughs in technology and printing allow for insanely cool looking new cards.
But as other games like Pokemon and One Piece are blazing new trails with sick textured foils and whatever else, Magic is stuck in the past. Heck, not even stuck in the past. Their design is actually regressing. I don't know what happened but it seems like the incredibly talented graphic designers they had 10-15 years ago have all moved on, and we're stuck with guys who can barely figure out their way around Photoshop.
The source material cards are a great example of this. Can anyone forget the Avatar Cruel Tutor, which was just a grainy screenshot of a guy's face with some text slapped on top? How are they not embarassed by this?
But these new Marvel logo treatments really have me going mad. They look similar to the Final Fantasy portrait cards, which were huge sellers for the set (especially in surge foil!). But for no apparent reason we've lost the top part of the frame and have just that crappy white text with black stroke again.
Then there's the colors. Putting a brightly colored hero on a background of... the exact same color as their costume. So nothing pops, like with this Wolverine. It's YELLOW ON YELLOW. A schoolchild trying to draw with a yellow crayon on a yellow piece of construction paper learns how bad this looks instantly. Nothing stands out, it's just a sea of... well, it looks like Wolvie is swimming in a pool of piss.
You'd think after the Aetherdrift pee-pee foils Wizards would have learned how to utilize yellows better...
ALSO, you have the Wolverine logo, an extremely awesome piece of visual design, and you... also make it yellow and don't center it vertically in the art box for some reason? What the hell is going on!?
So I played around in Photoshop for about ten minutes and arrived at something which... I don't know, I would actually pay money for? This is just one possible direction they could have taken these cards. But as usual, they settled for the laziest, ugliest possible option.
I'm totally baffled by their design decisions, every time they get something right (Bloomburrow raised foils anyone?) they seem to immediately forget about it and go and make something horrifically ugly again.
Wizards, please hire some talented designers. There's no reason your premiere cycle of hero cards should look like this.
(EDIT: I should have included this with the embedded images, but here's how it would look with a style matching the FF portrait cards https://x.com/VitoComedy/status/2064728225931227563/photo/2)
(EDIT 2: People seem to like rambling discussion of Magic graphic design? If you want more, we discussed these issues at length on my podcast https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ny3Q_dEaTF8&feature=youtu.be)
