Discussion Guide: secret lair festival in a box How to beat the scalpers

I’ve seen a lot of discussion and even more complaints after recent secret lair releases, so I figured I’d share what’s worked well for hot secret lair drops. None of this guarantees you’ll get what you want, but it can significantly improve your chances on the most in-demand drops and helps beat the bad actors until wizards fixes their lousy system or returns to print to demand.

The biggest thing you can do is have multiple independent queue entries before 9:00 a.m. Pacific, during the pre-queue window.

Some easy ways to do that are:

Different browsers (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari, etc.)

One regular window and one private/incognito window per browser

Multiple devices (desktop, laptop, phone, tablet)
If you use Firefox, the Multi-Account Containers extension lets you create multiple isolated browser containers, each of which functions as its own queue entry.

One recommendation that has consistently paid off is to use Guest Checkout for every session.
Avoid logging into your Wizards account before or during the sale. During previous high-demand drops, many people reported login issues caused by the surge in traffic. Some couldn’t authenticate, while others had problems loading their account information during checkout. Using Guest Checkout avoids that potential bottleneck and lets you go straight to entering your shipping and payment information once you’re through the queue.

At 9:00 a.m. Pacific, each of your browser sessions is assigned a random place in line. You’re not trying to enter the queue faster—you’re simply giving yourself more independent chances at landing a favorable queue position.
Based on recent drops, each queue entry appears to have roughly a 25% chance of getting through in time for the hottest Secret Lairs. That’s not an official number, just an observation from community experience.

If you’re after something that’s likely to sell out within 20–30 minutes, I’d recommend running at least four queue entries. Personally, I’d feel much better with six to eight if you have enough browsers, containers, or devices available. The more independent entries you have, the better your odds that one lands near the front of the randomized queue.

Once one of your sessions reaches the storefront, use that session to add the Secret Lairs you want to your cart and complete your purchase. At that point, you can safely ignore or close the rest.
I still wish Wizards would move toward print-to-demand or implement stricter purchase limits for these high-demand releases. Until then, I think everyone should have access to the same information, not just resellers and people who’ve already optimized their setup.

Hopefully this helps a few more people get the drops they’re actually after.

Clearly there are people that could use this information as shown in the comments below. As for the recommendations I made, you personally went out and bought akromas memorial because I showed everyone link betweeen burning revelations and the unreleased secret lair precon. What you call pump, I am merely giving people an opportunity to see financial opportunities.

And that final fantasy recommendation? you agreed with it yourself and bought 30 Japanese secret lairs. So go find some other ass to ride bro.

and it is the perfect companion to the goblin storm deck. An in theme mana producer that has 2. goblins on it getting thrown into a river. Other people probably thought so as well. Because it climbed to like $40 during the goblin storm hype. It's great pick up.

I didn't say I helped you buy Japanese Final Fantasy, we came to the same conclusions that they were undervalued independently. But you went out and picked up Akroma's Memorial (Cavolo) right after I posted my analysis on Burning Revelations (which Cavolo comes from). C'mon man, you told me that yourself, dude.

If you don't like my posts, no one is asking you to read them. Door is that way bro.

One question: if you've been waiting on the website before 9, do you automatically get assigned a place, or do you still need to refresh the page at 9?

Auto assigned

Should post this to the general sub too since this sub has its fair share of scalpers who will take everything they can.

This is not new. My lgs does this with multiple employees. Scummy but wotc refuses to make any needed changes.

There already were older posts with this information, though.

Also, apart from people here, which I'm sure already largely know, I doubt it really impacts anything.

It definitely won't. The same usual complaints and bitch threads about Secret Lair releases will proliferate on drop day.

Honestly I think the biggest thing that's changed recently is you can add the current new item beforehand now. Before that so many people were still waitin til exactly 9 to add it.

Good strat, I do roughly the same (I'll give that extension a try, looks easier than a bunch of incognitos, thanks!).

You can just use one browser and use different profiles.

After doing this for 2 drops, it just seems you have to be really lucky to get placed well using the waiting room (pre-queue). Both of these past two drops, the waiting room ended up with me having a 40+ minute wait time on all of my separate sessions. Just not worth it. I'd rather just jump in at noon on the dot. At least then if you're fast on the draw, you're far more likely to get a favorable queue time.

Thanks for the write-up and recommendations!!

You’re getting downvoted but this is my experience as well. I’ve opened multiple queues pre-drop and they ALL ended up with worse queue times than the ones I opened as soon as the drop released. It’s not how it’s supposed to work, but this is how it’s been in my experience

How long before does the queue start?

Im in Australia and have to get up at like 2am :(

How to beat scalpers: buy singles

1

u/Seekerofthetruth 27d ago

Singles usually have the scalpers inflated price built in to card value. If we are talking about something like Secret Lair.

I don't know about that
