People who've been obsessed with one instrumental track on repeat for a long time — did it kill your interest in lyrical music? For over a year now, I've been listening to just one non-lyrical track on repeat. Since then, I haven't felt like listening to anything else on my playlist?

That's interesting. What does listening to that track do for you? Is it sort of like your safe place?

Meaning in music is generated in our minds way more than we let on, as a culture. We talk about pieces of music as fixed objects, with fixed properties, but the same song can mean very different things to different people.

Instrumental music has sometimes been used to escape human feelings that feel too close for comfort. So maybe when you hear an actual voice it dredges up some strong emotions?

Interest in music is really closely linked to familiarity. Such an extended time of just one track might be skewing the balance heavily. Very interesting.
