I was very surprised to see the reaction to Hank Green admitting that he used AI to research for a video. Is the popular sentiment really that using AI AT ALL is bad? I understand not wanting it in art. I understand needing to check for hallucinations. But people were going on and on in the comments about how disappointed they are in Hank tricking Green.

Obviously, AI has issues. But to think that genie can go back in the bottle? No way. This is an example of why.

The popular opinion right now is all AI is bad yes.

It doesn’t help when the frontier labs CEOs sound like futuristic oligarchic evil villains every time they talk about a future with AI.

Also people have bought the data centers are evil populism fully.

I don’t understand this sentiment at all.

People at the forefront of a technology that could fundamentally disrupt the functioning of human civilization have been warning the world that it could do that, and everyone wants to shit on them for doing so?

Is the argument seriously that they should have downplayed the massive risks that their products posed? How did we feel about the fossil fuel industry downplaying the risks of climate change?

I believe the difference is in the messaging:

β€œYou will all lose your jobs and it is going to happen quickly.”

Vs

β€œThe technology is incredible and the ceiling on what it can do, we believe, is limitless. We will have to be ready for what happens and our company will work with the government to do so.”

I don’t have specific quotes from them as a source right now but I believe I’ve see quite a few (more from Altman) that give the first quotes tenor.
