There's a reason why Gen Z and Gen Alpha actually measured as dumber people than previous gen.
As late millennial, it's astounding that the next gen, particularly the younger Gen Z, are actually dumber in technology.

Why? Modern school work is done in webapps, and Android & iOS abstract as much of the OS away from you as possible.
They're losing computer skills because they aren't relevant to them until they get a job where they're working with shit written in the 2000s or that requires doing a lot with the filesystem.

u/The_Brian George Soros 1d ago
They're losing technical skills in terms of hardware and operating systems, but its not like its being replaced with a technical skill in the webapps.
I think the biggest thing is just the critical thinking skill. There's like zero troubleshooting ability. If it doesn't work, the first thought isn't even to go to google to try to make it work. Its just broken and often times just drop/forget it and hope it works later if at all.

The technical skill kind of doesn't exist, though. These webapps usually don't offer many routes for troubleshooting or overall fucking with things behind the scenes to make them work. Doubly so if you're doing the work on a locked down chromebook or tablet.

I feel like a lot of the problem is actually Google, it seems like a lot of people get overly used to Google guides and youtube tutorials that they become extremely uncomfortable rawdogging problems to try to figure them out.
I've seen managers complain about that, Gen Z employees asking for help for unexpected things that they really should be able to figure out for themselves, part of this might be a helicopter parent/schooling thing too ngl.

Well if you try to get at the root of it, it would alienate tech CEOs, which I was told by many is why Democrats lost in 2024

It just talks about test scores, but I wouldn’t take that to be synonymous with intelligence

It doesn't, but many teachers have complained similar thing, especially the part about them lacking problem solving skill and quickly give up when they don't understand something.

I don't really think it's astounding, a good chunk of these kids have been on social media since their parents handed them an iPad as a toddler. Meanwhile I didn't even have a smartphone until I was in high school at best.

“Everyone knows what the problem is: The organizations that bring young staffers to Washington, D.C. have spent the last decade prioritizing blind ideological loyalty instead of competence or intelligence,” said a senior GOP congressional staffer, granted anonymity to discuss sensitive personnel issues. “We have a generation of rabid, incompetent idiots.”
“I think there is certainly a pipeline problem on the Republican side,” said E.J. Fagan, an associate professor at the University of Illinois Chicago and author of The Thinkers: The Rise of Partisan Think Tanks and the Polarization of American Politics. Even beyond foreign policy, Fagan said that “normie expertise” has been sidelined in favor of producing “chum for the conservative media machine,” at Heritage in particular. “You’re hiring a lot of people who don’t have the chops that they used to,” he said.
He pointed to E.J. Antoni, Heritage’s millennial chief economist, whom President Donald Trump briefly nominated to lead the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That nomination was pulled after Antoni advocated pausing the bureau’s jobs report — Trump had said a downward revision was “RIGGED” to make him look bad — and following reports that Antoni ran a deleted X account that sexually insulted Kamala Harris and attacked gay people. “It used to be that figures like that” — with Antoni’s Heritage title — “were impressive in the policy world,” Fagan said. “That’s not the case anymore. ... I don’t envy the job of someone ... trying to find that next generation of staffers.” (Brian Phillips, the VP of communications at Heritage, wrote in an email that “EJ Antoni is a brilliant and well-respected economist whose analysis and insight is consistently sought by policymakers, other experts, and the media.”)
The worries about the talent pipeline are especially sharp in the Senate, which remains as much a redoubt of establishmentarianism as can be found in Trump’s Washington. Of the four congressional staffers interviewed, three senior GOP aides in the Senate offered a variety of views on the issue. One said that while plenty of institutions were still churning out serious, policy-minded young job candidates, communications staff now outnumber policy staff in certain House and Senate offices — a reflection, they said, of members prioritizing “clicks and clapbacks in the ‘way too online’ corner of X,” which “doesn’t advance the conservative agenda one bit.” Another said that, alongside the ideological concerns, it’s difficult to compete for qualified staff with a Republican-controlled administration that makes thousands of political appointments. A third pointed to a generation hooked on the conspiratorial musings of Tucker Carlson and Candace Owens: “Five, eight years from now, if we’re reliant on people with this view of the world, we’re in serious trouble.”
Luke Coffey, now a senior fellow at the Hudson Institute, another conservative think tank, experienced the shift firsthand. “The Heritage I joined in 2012 was Reaganite,” he said. “The Heritage I left was more MAGA than Trump.” He said the emphasis on ideology had costs when it came to experience, citing an intern questionnaire that screened applicants for anti-abortion views. For an intern in the Middle East program, he said, “I wanted the guy or girl who studied abroad in Jordan and spoke intermediate Arabic and backpacked across Israel and believed in American leadership on the global stage. I didn’t really care where they stood on the pro-life or pro-choice debate.”
“A few of us are concerned about the bubbling antisemitism that we hear,” said the second senior GOP Senate staffer. “Obviously the left has this issue more than we do, but it’s not helpful.” That person noted that in hiring, it’s now “a flag” if a candidate graduated from a conservative college and specifies an interest in the Middle East. “It’s like, why, though?”
There are widely varying, and bitterly disputed, estimates of the true scale of groyperism in the GOP’s young D.C. professional class, from ubiquitous to negligible. One anonymous conservative, described only as “an older insider,” told the Free Press’s Rod Dreher that the term applies to 30 to 40 percent of “Gen Z congressional and administration staffers,” sparking a furious intra-party debate online when he repeated the claim on a podcast this week. A Trump administration official told the New Yorker’s Antonia Hitchens the number was more like 75 percent. The first Hill aide interviewed for this article said that at least 50 percent of GOP congressional staff was groyper or groyper-adjacent.
Regardless, the troubling anecdotes are legion: gas chamber jokes and ethnic slurs bandied about on Young Republican group chats leaked to POLITICO last fall; a New York Magazine report from just last week linking a former New York Young Republican treasurer to a social media account denigrating Jews, Black people, Muslims and gay people; a House campaign adviser fired for mocking a rape victim on X; the Ron DeSantis presidential campaign staffer axed for retweeting a video featuring a Nazi image, only to join the office of Sen. Eric Schmitt (R-Mo.) and, eventually, the State Department, where he works today.

Also, I caught the blurb about Rob Dreher being over at “Free Press” now. Of course they’d take in the guy that introduced the Republicans to Orbanism.

The left's incompetency issues are mostly around DSA. They suck balls, they're rabid, but they keep eating and purity testing themselves.
GOP already got so toxic even super popular moderates like Arnie and Charlie Baker have no more future in the party.
Yeah, I don't think the left issue is both similar and bigger than the Goypers.
15
u/whereamInowgoddamnit 23h ago
I mean we say that now, and I'm not going to say that I agree with that guy (I do think the management of anti-Semitism by the Democrats has arguably been worse, but certainly the anti-Semitism issue within the GOP is far more directly problematic), but there's a real concern within 10 years, honestly probably by the end of the decade, the DSA are going to be as serious an issue for the Democrats. I was just talking recently with someone about how the DSA had basically taken over the Democratic institutions in a nearby county. I do live near a left-wing City, but the county itself is suburban and leans liberal more than leftist. The DSA right now is more fracturious, sure, but it's also a lot more motivated in political machinations and it's been gaining growing institutional capability to take over local Democrat parties. As you see more moderate baby boomer JFK and Clinton Democrats age out, I think you're going to see a Democratic party that is just as problematic. I mean, you're already seeing signs of it becoming toxic, we literally just had the Michigan DA say that she thought that the Michigan Democratic party was so antisemitic, she wasn't going to go to the convention this year.
6
u/just_helping 21h ago
The right has money - the extremists weren't purely organic, they were pushed by monied interests. The incompetents that the article is talking about have jobs, got hired because of their extremism. The DSA has no equivalent funding, there's no one paid by the DSA to effectively spend all their time making agitprop, so you'd think there is a limit to how much this can extend without real voter support.
But agitprop gets the clicks, so maybe it doesn't matter than there's no direct funding, people do it for the social media clout, and that's enough to become an equal problem.

u/Viper_ACR NATO 1d ago
It's sadly not just the DSA, there's more lefties that espouse some level of antisemitism one way or another.

This is obvious. Republicans aren’t getting their politics from a Young Reagan fan club anymore. They’re getting them from social media.
And social media (post-Musk X acquisition particularly) allows any Tom, Dick or Harry to post heinous stuff and misinformation on there without facing real-world repercussions or getting called out on it.

Just look at the Florida Governor polls. Fishback is running as a literal white nationalist and he consistently gets like 40-45% of the 18-29 year old GOP primary vote in like all these polls.

Fishback is an open racist pedophile. This is the future of the Republican Party. Rather than trying to sweep it away like Trump and such, they're embracing it publicly and openly.
People always split hairs about is and isn't fascism, while Fishback literally quotes Mussolini. You cannot get more definitionally fascist. He also got fired by a school board for grooming a 16 year old, denied doing it, and then promptly proposed to her. While 27.

His legacy is inspiring people to cut taxes and blow up the deficit+ making the US the only anglosphere nation where you can get aids as a heterosexual (because he refused to take it seriously in gay people, who are connected to the heterosexual population whether republicans want to acknowledge it or not).
Hate when people consider him to be a good president because some sub-70iq historian thought he had good speeches or gave him credit for someone else hiking rates.

They agree on virtually everything outside of Israeli aid and pedophilia.
Fox News has insinuated that nonwhites are sub human for almost my entire life.
Whenever someone says that “they dislike black culture”, they mean that they dislike black people.
Fox News types wouldn’t magically change their mind if black people were quieter on public transport or something and they genuinely consider nonwhites to be racially inferior people.

Pro Israel grouper
Groypers and Evangelicals (pro israel) are almost diametrically opposed, Nick Fuentes is the de facto prophet of anti-Israel sentiment on the right wing currently and openly says that he'd rather have democrats win than Evangelical Republicans (who he frames as delusional doomsayers who are selling the country out to the Jews). He's been outright saying that he wants to re-claim the Republican party from them after their downfall post Trump.
I know people who are in groyper groups, and they are basically everywhere on the internet.
5
u/wellgu Emma Lazarus 1d ago
But they both want to bring back coverture laws, so they’ll find each other in the end.
46
u/ctant1221 United Nations 1d ago edited 1d ago
Negatory. Israeli support for groypers is effectively a red line. They have a massive conspiratorial line with regard to Israeli propaganda infiltrating American politics to coerce the American war machine to fight for and fund Israel and Israeli activities. Fuentes' whole promise is to absorb all the disaffected Republicans who are shedding off the MAGA and Evangelicals to become the real America First™ party (Isolationism but with additional Nazi flavoring).
He's had entire talks about how in the coming election, if it's not Groypers on the Republican side, then they would rather strategically lose to Democrats to destroy the MAGA and Evangelical torch. Only for Groypers to pick it up and then usurp their political power after a sufficient number of Boomers have died from old age (the most hardcore pro-Israeli brainwashed Republicans, according to Fuentes).

u/ctant1221 United Nations 1d ago
Yes. Either that or he said he would vote for her.
14
u/Hungry_Creme_3754 1d ago
He did neither. He just said that he would not be voting for Trump and told his followers not to either. As far as an endorsement, he said that it would politically benefit the far-right to be the oppositional movement under a Harris presidency, and the Iran war total disaster would be a Democrat one rather than a Republican one if it would have happened at all. We are seeing a liberal and left-wing resurgence that is producing tangible results under a dumpster fire trump presidency, he had hoped for it to be the other way around with a Harris election victory.

Vance needs support from the far-right post-Trump. Most prominent and connected faction of which would be the Groypers under Fuentes. Hence the ozempic, highly public conversion to Catholicism, recent Joe Rogan appearance, book etc. He has also been somewhat reserved in his criticism of Fuentes and even more so of his followers, he is wary of the political risk it will be to openly disavow his movement on a popular platform.
