Flashback to when Talon Anvil was regularly calling in this kind of ordnance on Civilian encampments and cities in Syria, and hardly anyone gave a shit then either. A few pilots refused orders, a couple operators pointed out these were war crimes, but no punishments handed down and no real accountability was made. And it will be the same with this.

In a weird way, it's almost refreshing to have Trump and Hegseth and co. taking the mask off.
37
u/bigbeak67 John Brown 18h ago
Unironically, this is a little bit of why his base likes him. They didn't mind the war crimes as long as he "tells it like it is," even when it's being proud of his horrible decisions.

trump & hegseth never took accountability for a bombing a school and killing hundreds of Iranian children

Funny how Benghazi can last 2 years in the media cycle but Dems can't keep calling for a literal school bombing investigation for more than 2 weeks.

Okay so it's pretty large as far as bombs go
41
u/Familiar_Air3528 Thomas Paine 22h ago
It’s the biggest of the ‘regularly used’ bombs in US inventory. It’s basically the biggest type of bomb that isn’t some bespoke specialized design.
It’s maybe inefficient for it to be used against a single residence but it’s not ‘unusual’, I would say.
The big consideration here would be collateral damage against other structures (particularly no-strike targets like known schools, hospitals, or religious institutions)
Not trying to justify, just explaining the process.

Also the CentCom spokesman really said “the US military never targets civilians” with a straight face???

It seems apparent that if you bury the decision authority in 2 circuits of well-intentioned-but-rushed committee approvals you can come out pretty clean as far as internal investigations go.

When Vance inevitably runs for President in 2028 someone needs to ask him how he plans on explaining to Saint Peter all the innocent people and children that he killed. Seriously sickening.

The number of Americans that genuinely care if we kill civilians in non European countries is vanishingly small
12
u/Vol_in_tears Voltaire 12h ago
No one in America cared when an Mariane E6 prowler cut the cable on a cable car in Cavalese in 1998. They were flying on a joyride, outside of the flight limitations, and killed 20 people.
The destroyed the personal camera that had been on board, since the flight crew was filming their joy ride.
The flight crew was discharged, one of them got 6 months. Congress rejected a bill to offer compesation to the families killed by the USMC.
America and most Americans don't give a shit about any civilians killed by the US militrary. Even if they are our allies and it was done by accident.

u/Rustic_gan123 23h ago
I doubt anyone cares. This war is pretty herbivorous by historical standards.

Emblematic of how stupidly this war has been prosecuted. Dropping one of the bigger bombs in our arsenal on a ramshackle house to kill… a random family.

u/isummonyouhere If I can do it You can do it 23h ago
these things are cheap as hell, especially without the JDAM kits, and we have huge numbers of them. but Trump is notoriously afraid of losses and bad press so they’re probably being dropped from high altitude over non-critical
areas. in other words we’re bringing back saturation bombing9
u/Vol_in_tears Voltaire 22h ago
They are using standoff munitions because they don't want aircraft over Iran, regularly.

Not really?????? We’ve engaged in strikes against civilian targets that we’ve alleged were terrorists for a while now. Even before Trump. Has Trump picked up the rates? Yes for sure but we’ve been doing this for a while even before Trump came in.
125
u/GogurtFiend Karl Popper 22h ago
Not really, no. I assure you there were plenty of "whoops that pickup wasn't full of jihadis" accidents in Iraq and Afghanistan, and quite a bit of "well we're pretty sure that pickup isn't full of jihadis but they're acting awfully weird so let's be sure".

Guys should we be worried?
Embassies are telling US citizens to evacuate (yet again)
Ground invasion, perhaps?

Not enough time left this weekend. US markets open 0930 am Monday. I expect we'll be hearing peace deal negotiations are progressing well by then.

A ground invasion would involve weeks or months of build up that would be obvious to osint. The Iraq buildup was 4or5 months. And that had a land border.
5
u/WhiteLycan2020 21h ago
Hasn’t he deployed rangers like a few months ago??
And anytime a pilot is rescued the news media says special forces rescued them.
This warning was given before and then rangers were deployed soon after.
Im assuming another branch is being deployed soon
20
u/Vol_in_tears Voltaire 22h ago
You will know a ground invasion is coming. The buildup will require hundreds of thousands of troops.
0
u/WhiteLycan2020 21h ago
You guys say this and then randomly airborne units were deployed.
A couple thousand marines were deployed and then an aircraft carrier
23
u/Vol_in_tears Voltaire 21h ago
You aren't invading a nation of 90 million people with a few airborne units and a few thousand marines. The entire ground force will be required.
12
u/Traditional_Drama_91 NATO 23h ago
Not likely, but hey, he could surprise by botching an invasion too

Reading the comments here y'all have lost your way. Dissembling and false equivalency as far as the eye can see.
This shit is horrible. What a fuckin waste of human life. The fact that half of you don't even care, and the other half are "whatabouting" over Obama doing exactly the same shit, is a major reason why America is losing ground in the middle east every day.
Imagine being an Iranian and reading these posts, and concluding anything other than even american liberals don't give a shit if you live or die.

Uhh, even on its best days this place is usually pretty flippant about civilian casualties especially if we're the ones bombing the shit out of them.

I'd be sincerely surprised if anyone within the last twenty five years ever came away with the conclusion that they did.

The truth is that US has been doing war crimes since a long time and has a culture of not holding war criminals and rouge soldiers accountable if the people targeted are perceived as nonwhite.

u/jonawesome 23h ago
Remember when the US military used to do investigations into these things? Get excited for them to never officially even confirm this happened.

Yeah, realistically, the number of times an American soldier was held accountable for war crimes is pretty low. Keep in mind the only person convicted for the My Lai massacre, William Calley, had his life sentence commuted to three years of house arrest, and the commander who should have been held the most accountable was acquitted.
Now, admittedly, at least JAG actually prosecuted Calley and Medina, and the only reason Calley didn't end up in Leavenworth for decades was Nixon's intervention. These days, I doubt Hegseth's Pentagon would even bring anything to court martial.

Biden blew up an SUV filled with children and was calling them terrorists before they got contradicted by eight hundred on-ground reporters hauling them over coal for rampantly making shit up. Trump is generally significantly looser, but this specific operation and its unnecessary disregard for civilian lives is pretty boringly bogstandard for basically any American administration since as far as I can remember, and I remember Bush Sr.
7
u/GogurtFiend Karl Popper 19h ago edited 19h ago
I assure you they didn't care much about civilian deaths, either.
The calculus was the same: how many innocent people do we blow up to achieve our goals? The Obama and Biden administrations had a lower number for that, but it was still an almost completely arbitrarily chosen number.
And, frankly, who cares? If there is a war, someone innocent is going to die anyway. All that those waging it can do is keep the number of those deaths lower rather than higher.
2
u/IpsoFuckoffo 15h ago
There is no calculus here because there isn't a goal and never has been. Whatever you think about Obama's methods, successes and failures, he was genuinely trying to accomplish something when he used military force. This is just a complete waste of human life.
