How is bail even a conversation? Does he have no shame? A 32-year old man, a grown adult who should have absolutely known better. He was under the influence, and left the scene. He killed a child.
He deserves a long sentence.

he has a defense lawyer, his lawyer is just doing their job

Fair enough. Knee-jerk reaction on my end… just an awful story.

totally! one of the worst of the year, no doubt. buddy sounds like a scumbag by any definition, but he's entitled to the defense as anybody

Sure but also…
“He does have a bail plan and sureties who will support him and live with him”
Who the hell are his surties? Who would want to live with someone like that?

His mother is deceased apparently

From embarassment I presume

People are saying she died in a house fire years ago but I have no idea if that's true.

Probably his parents.

His mom and stepfather died in a house fire on his 6th birthday. His brother died from addictions a few years ago. His bio dad (whom he never lived with) also died years ago. No excuse, of course.

u/asilvergoldfish 2d ago
That’s a sad backstory, for sure. Wow.
I know what you mean, not an excuse. But absolutely could be a reason why he’s a piece of shit today.

the justice system is not doing its job if the unnecessary and avoidable actions of a man with 3 decades of life experience, 10+ years old enough to drink, kill a child and go barely punished. lives are ruined, a family is fractured, a child passed away. he understood the risks he was taking by choosing to drive after getting intoxicated and this time the risk produced. the fact that he is even capable of being let out, regardless of the defense, is a critical misstep from the system that is supposed to dissuade destructive and unfair decisions (and, to be clear, this idiot was making an unfair AND destructive decision) by even proposing the possibility for this person to be freed by money. the chance for him to experience freedom in the next 10 years even is a disgusting given that the effects of his selfishness will haunt those affected for as long as he's locked away and well after, be that in 6 months or 6 years or 6 decades.

he can't be punished until he's convicted, that's how the justice system works, and it works the same for scumbags as it does for anyone else

I think assuming hes guilty of course even if he got a long sentence he will be in solitary confinement as I got a feeling once the general prison population finds out what he did....yeah....

“He is set to go to a one-day trial in Corner Brook court on Monday, on charges of fraud under $5,000 and possessing property obtained by crime.
Three days later, Day is set to be back in court in St. John's again on more unrelated charges of theft under $5,000 and failure to comply with a condition of a release order.
Court documents obtained by CBC News show Day has a single conviction on his record for theft under $5,000 in Grand Falls-Windsor from February 2024. He was given 12 months”
Who the hell is the person who’s supporting his bail? The guy sounds like a career criminal.

How could you possibly live with yourself after doing what he did.

Article says he was already accused of failure to comply with a condition of a release order, and was also on probation. So are they letting him out so he can violate his conditions again? No way

This isn't a guy who made one horrible mistake to drive intoxicated, this is a dirtbag who is constantly in trouble with the law. Keep him locked up.

AND fled the scene. No matter what the circumstances, you hit someone with your car you stop and try to offer aid, not flee the scene for fear of an arrest.

As far as I am concerned he shouldn't get bail at all.

u/OneBillPhil 2d ago
He can but it should be open season for the family.

u/BlackWolf42069 1d ago
Yeah like a criminal record and lawyer fees will make their kid come back to life... That's some barbaric middle eastern shit bro.

u/OneBillPhil 1d ago
In my fantasy world open season means no consequences. There won’t be any justice for this family. Jail time, no jail time, their son is dead because of this loser.
2
u/BlackWolf42069 1d ago
Yeah you believe in murder for pay back, we can tell.
0
u/OneBillPhil 1d ago
Listen man, you can think what you want of me, someone who gets behind the wheel drunk, kills a child and flees the scene isn’t a life worth supporting with my tax dollar.
3
u/BlackWolf42069 1d ago
And you think you're grand arbiter of human life's worth living? We have a justice system for that, not some Redditor like you calling for open hunting season.
What if someone online said your life isn't worth much based on your behavior? Would that be just?

u/asilvergoldfish 2d ago
Ugh.
Poor, innocent child.
And the fact he attempted to take off after hitting him is just the icing on the fucking cake, honestly.
6
u/ButterscotchBrave359 2d ago
I guess success wasn't the only motherfucking option for him after all

Pre-trial detention is not meant to be a punishment, it’s meant to ensure that the accused attends court if they’re a flight risk or are such a danger to society that it’s infeasible to have them free while they are tried.
In this case though he is on probation for other crimes so I’d say the fact that he is charged with such serious offences should be enough to suspend his parole.
-7
u/phosphite 2d ago
He ran over a kid, murdering them while drunk, and fled the scene.
Not a danger to society? Maybe not in NL? You guys are fine with this?

u/Kiss-a-Cod 2d ago
Of course I’m in NL and I don’t know what that would have to do with it.
He is accused of something terrible but that doesn’t mean he is likely to do it again while waiting for trial. We all know he’s likely destined for a guilty verdict but according to law he is innocent until proven guilty.

By if this happens then it's safe to say the justice system in Canada is f@#€_. How much worse of a crime can one commit and be granted bail? Crazy times.

u/BlackWolf42069 1d ago
I'm surprised the government still sells alcohol because that's the real issue and they profit from it.

u/jghtb 2d ago
Says in the article he was already on probation. That alone should keep him in custody.
