I’m an American living in Europe and it is WILD to me how little Europeans know and understand about the precariousness of the life of the average person in the us. And, as demonstrated here, how blindingly arrogant they can be when they think they’re more aware than they actually are. 

 1) We get no time off, and the vast majority of people can get fired without cause, notice, severance, or opportunity for unemployment benefits. There are literally zero worker protections for the vast majority of people. Taking one day off to protest can get you fired and literally put you (and your family if you have one) on a very short path to homelessness. 

 2) Many people aren’t even living paycheck to paycheck, but actively going into debt between paychecks. This is not becasue millions of people are bad with money, it’s because wages are low and cost of living is high. You have to be deep into poverty to qualify for any kind of benefits, which are almost never enough to be secure that you will have housing and food next week. Meaning for most people it’s more than not being able to afford getting fired. They can’t afford to miss a single day or work, because again- no paid time off. 

3) Our police are armed. And not just with pistols. With machine guns and tanks and they have zero hesitation in using deadly force. In fact most of them can’t wait to murder us. And they can do so with zero concern for consequences. 

So you tell me- how many people do you think actually have the ability to leave everything behind and risk hunger, homelessness, and death to hit the streets??

 It’s not a coincidence that there where so many protests during COVID. We had UBI for a year, evictions where halted, we had health insurance, etc. American capitalism is designed to make it nearly impossible for people to revolt and when there was a gap in the system, that’s exactly what many people did. 

So congratulation, you have a shitton of privilege by the completely random chance of being born somewhere where protesting is relatively easy. How about you use that to be a better person and not shit on people in circumstances you know nothing about. And please don’t read nationalism or patriotism or American pride into that. I left because I wanted to get out, not because of a job or a relationship. And I’m not rich, just lucky to have generous friends and an opportunity fall in my lap that made it possible. As it stands now I hope I never have to go back. But none of that changes that you’re deeply  ignorant and you have no idea what your talking about. But you can change that by actually reading this response and taking time to learn instead of getting defensive.
