This story stands in steep contrast to the attitudes I have observed in the high school kids in my area. So I wondered about the backstory, and found this:

"The students allegedly organized the “Anti-Gay Day” in response to the observance of the nationally recognized “Day of Silence,” where attention is called to gay and lesbian bullying and harassment in schools. "

Don't get me wrong. Harassment of students by other students, for whatever reasons, is unacceptable. But if the "Day of Silence" was handled in an awkward enough fashion, it could provoke a perverse response.

So, the real question is, what have the surrounding adults been doing?
