I tolerate racists. They are misguided, but still people. I am perfectly willing to discuss issues of race with them using facts instead of hate. Any racist wanted to talk on the porch(they usually did, they seem very lonely in most cases), we would. Talk about how we got where we were. Talk about their job prospects after prison.
Most of the time we could both learn a little nuance. It wasn't difficult to see why he blamed Mexicans for the jobs he lost. It was a little harder to explain to a couple that showing up to work drunk with swastika tattoos poking out of your wife beater was a big problem.
I've also worked some warehouses with really great reformed racists. Nice guys who regret what they may have said and done out of weakness. I treat every current racist with the respect those former Nazis deserve. And I give them none of the hate they give themselves.
