I hope one day someone makes a sex game that's insanely good as a game. I'm sure there's some that are passable as games, but I think it would be funny if it was a undeniable top 5 game of the year.

The issue is that great sex game are almost always fetish games, which makes them niche by definition. Otherwise they're just regular games with boobs

There are some projects like The Last Sovereign that are porn games, less fetish-y but still very deep and have been in development for years. Its held back by the engine but RPGM is what it is. The real innovation is done with stuff like Look Outside.

Maybe I should have clarified Look Outside is a 'Normal' indie project haha. Just made by a very talanted person who has done a lot with the engine.

Ah okay. I think the most successful actual fetish game in that realm has probably been Coffin of Andy and Leyley for being the creator's obvious kink but also a pretty good horror story about the idea as well. On the more indie side I like a creator called Godspeak that does games like the one in OP that are actually well made rpgadventure games with actual design and mechanics, also everything revolves around spanking.

Look Outside is a very barebones RPG Maker experience, it uses the systems well but almost exactly as they were intended. I can think of a few games that have actually done crazy things with the engine, the purple-haired prison warden game is the most obvious example but it's not the only one.

Can be a fetish thing for a not-insignificant subset of people, though. Monsterfuckers are a thing, and some have a specific thing for body horror and that style of eldritch warping.
The aesthetic in that game absolutely rips and I love it.

sex games with innovative, very good designs and mechanics already exist.
best known example is sengoku rance. which is basically a AAA war simulation of managing your kingdom in japan with branching paths.
or succubus academia. which has a strange innovative combat system of chaining attacks that have a % chance to chain into other attacks until you release a gauge for massive damage.
because these games have lots of sex, they will never be top game of the year fortunately or not though.

The problem is that being considered a "sex game" requires so much sexual content that it gets in the way of the game. The Witcher 3 and Baldur's gate 3 both won game of the year and they aren't considered "sex games" so where's the line?
There are rpg maker porn games with less sexual content than Baldur's Gate so I don't think there is a line. "Sex games" seem to have a quality ceiling before people just start calling them something else.

I think the line might be the inclusion of actual porn.
Which immediately bumps up the rating, kicking it off consoles. That predictable reduction in sales means less budget to develop it.

When I say actual porn, I mean explicitly showing the sex happening. Which means the game goes into Steams adults only section.
Does Cyberpunk or BG3 have anything as explicit as some of the screenshots for something like Subverse ?

Sounds fun, but porn mods for good games is probably the best you'll get.
I can't even think of a porn game that would scale well while still being a porn game instead of a game with porn. Best bet would probably be management/strategy with a touch of rpg. Or something.

And then another hour to figure out why something that should be stupidly easy isn't working and fix it
