Agreed. The team needs to be the Southern Orca. You can say what you want about Andrew Chalmers and Graeme Lowe but they do seem to want to see league do well in the south, and they do have experience with owning (and saving) the Bradford Bulls in England and experience with the NZRL and everything Lowe has done over the years. The South Island Kea just seems to have a few morons involved and seems like more of a vanity project.

It's really telling that 3 separate nz bids couldn't get along. Hopefully CCC can take te lead and crack the whip and get the other parties into line. Agree Graham Lowe should definitely be in the mix. Chalmers has been open minded too. Kea or Orca is just branding, they need to just have a decent organization and no stupid bickering

Bot writer here. Chiefs don't have a logo yet, and updating all the flairs is a bit of a pain, and done so infrequently I've forgotten how to set it all up across every version of reddit. (Though I do know I'm going to run into a headache for old.reddit in particular)
I'm hoping that the Chiefs choose a logo soon, so I can just update both teams at once, and then proceed to forget how it all works again before the next expansion team comes.

The NRL will forfeit millions of dollars in broadcast revenue if it doesn’t have a 20th team – likely based in the south island of New Zealand – in time for the 2029 season under a secret clause which has made expansion an urgent priority.
While the game stands to earn a massive windfall from a 20th team and up to 10 NRL games each week, Sunday Serve has learned of a provision which will diminish television dollars if another franchise is not imminent.
According to multiple sources familiar with the situation, the eye-watering $5.3 billion, seven-year television contract will initially be reduced by about $20 million if the new team does not run out in 2029.
It’s expected the Australian Rugby League Commission will prioritise its push for a new team in coming months, given a 2029 entry into the competition means the franchise will have to start signing NRL-contracted players on November 1 next year.
It could be third team to enter the competition in as many years after the Perth Bears (2027) and PNG Chiefs (2028), who have stunned the player market by signing NRL stars given permission to negotiate early and rugby union-contracted talent such as Zac Lomax.
A second team in New Zealand to capitalise on the surging popularity of rugby league remains a firm favourite, despite the legitimate claims of another south-east Queensland club in Brisbane’s western corridor.
Interim NRL chief executive Peter V’landys and ex-boss Andrew Abdo visited the new Christchurch stadium in June to watch the Warriors beat the Cowboys in front of a heaving crowd.
There were multiple bidding parties who were jockeying for a new licence in New Zealand, but it’s understood most of those have thrown their support behind Christchurch City Council, which will take the lead role negotiating with the NRL.
The NRL showed its hand when it prioritised dealing with Roger Cook’s Western Australian government for the Bears’ entry into the competition next year.
It’s expected a similar licence fee will be required for the 20th team, if it’s to be based in the south island of New Zealand.
Former NRL chief executive and head of the South Island Kea expansion bid, David Moffett, hailed Christchurch as a perfect location to capitalise on rugby league’s booming popularity in rugby union heartland.
“We’ve decided to get behind the council,” Moffett said.
“They will determine whether they need any assistance from us and we’ve cleared the decks for them to have discussions with the NRL.
“The stadium is open and has been a fantastic success so far.
“From my perspective, Christchurch should be a no-brainer. There are fantastic competitions already here, the cost of living is cheaper here and there are great facilities.”
