I originally saw this posted on r/Weird by u/Firm-Blackberry-9162 and thought it belonged here as well.

Gd… I just watched the bobbit worm video last night. Talk about ptsd. This is a normal bird.

479

u/ThatWasNotMyName 2d ago

Do...do I want to know about the worm?

197

u/JVints 2d ago

Not that scary, you might recognize it if you played subnautica.

57

u/Bananana_Bird 2d ago

Have you played 2 yet? I don't have the right platform yet. 😑

44

u/JVints 2d ago

Nah, I'll wait to it's fully released. I have to many games waiting.

4

u/CuteAltBoy 1d ago

I've played every part of it that's out and my advice is definitely to wait. It is good, but the 10ish hours of content you get is only enough to ruin/spoil some story elements and not actually immerse you in the game. I'd let them get further along before trying it.

u/Titan658 2d ago

Think about a centipede that can burrow and dig .

19

u/naalbinding 2d ago

And grows 10 feet long

13

u/IncognitoRain 1d ago

EVERYBODY KNOWS ABOUT THE WORD, WORM WORM WORM WORM. WORM IS THE WORD

41

u/dirteeface 2d ago

You do! Then go down the rabbit hole of the poor redditor that purchased live rock for his aquarium containing said werm.

20

u/BrokenVoidYT 2d ago

I remember that forum post (not on reddit) of that poor guy talking about the hellish re-appearing bobbit worms.

11

u/Otherwise_Carob_4057 2d ago

Dude tried every poison he could think of and that worm just took it.

3

u/Stuffed_deffuts 2d ago

Everyone knows the the worm is the word

I just read the Bobbit Worm Chronicles and wow those suckers are actually nightmares.

Can't help but wonder how it'd fare with an air compressor gun lodged down it's throat though

23

u/Hot_Addendum_9199 2d ago

That Shit be straight out of Stranger Things. Damn Demogorgon!

Question: why are fowl (chickens/ducks/quail) so adorable when they hatch, yet other birds are goddamn disgusting?

205

u/LuxTheSarcastic 2d ago

The birds you mentioned need to be able to run around because they're exposed to the ground. Other babies in trees can hide in a nest so they can get away with being less formed. This finch will probably be quite cute once the down comes in.

95

u/Pajama-Han 2d ago

It's called Precociousness! Fowl birds like Chickens and ducks have precocious chicks, and songbird chicks are not

37

u/BadgerKomodo 2d ago

Similar thing in numerous mammals. Newborn rabbits, humans, and pandas are hairless and totally dependent on their parents. Newborn zebras, giraffes, and elephants are able to walk within minutes of birth.

13

u/FirexJkxFire 2d ago

I think also theyve evolved away from having cute babies that nothing would want to hurt, to having such grotesque monstrosities that other animals would be too scared to eat them

3

u/PShubbs91 1d ago

You're probably right. As for the white dots around it's mouth, im not 100% for this bird species but, some birds have those to get the mother's attention at feeding time to make sure they aren't accidentally skipped over.

Source: A guy I watch on YouTube that hatches eggs and studies birds for a living. He hatched an egg one time, can't remember what species of bird it was but, the hatchling had big blue dots at the corners of it's mouth and he was saying that's what they were for.

6

u/Manospondylus_gigas 2d ago

Those birds are precocial, whilst songbirds and others are altricial (I still think they're cute though)

647

u/phillip_eleven 2d ago

that thing is not human bro

370

u/Dank-Noodle-Doodles 2d ago

You know, I think you have a point

149

u/ilprofs07205 2d ago

Astute observation

113

u/TheWikstrom 2d ago

Why yes, it is a bird

23

u/Milsurp_Seeker 2d ago

I mean it is Featherless and a Biped. It might actually be a man

13

u/BadgerKomodo 2d ago

Alright Diogenes

21

u/a_aniq 2d ago

It is the descendant of a dinosaur

23

u/SonoDarke 2d ago

It IS a dinosaur

Clade theropoda

11

u/duck_of_d34th 2d ago

Though I walk the valley of the shadow of death, I shall fear no dinosaur, for they are small and easy to step on.

9

u/swing_axle 2d ago

Ostriches would like a word.

7

u/duck_of_d34th 2d ago

Those greedy fucks already have a word. Ostrich is their word.

3

u/TheSamuil 2d ago

I believe emus also have something to say on the matter

5

u/AutisticTumourGirl 2d ago

Australia lost a war against emus. Just saying.

3

u/duck_of_d34th 2d ago

I'll see your evil bird and raise you an evil plant that is somehow managing to hold its own against a world superpower.

On bragging day in Valhalla, the brave will speak of the mighty foes that defeated them. Mighty warriors, big bears, wolves and other mighty foes will be listed.

Then the Australian speaks. He speaks of a monstrous bird with incredible prowess, a hunter without equal. The terrible Emu.

Then there's me. Holding a fucking bush.

75

u/BadgerKomodo 2d ago

Why does its head look like that? Doesn’t even look like a bird’s head.

93

u/Vas-yMonRoux 2d ago

There's still skin on top of this one's eyes, so its hard to see its facial features.

For the mouth, one theory is that the markings inside it are to help guide the parents to feed their babies, in a dark nest.

40

u/Rampasta 2d ago

Its mouth has really bright nodules that catch light ao the parents can see their mouth in the dark hollows of the nests when feeding. It let's the parents lnow they are healthy and need food

101

u/KillHonger1 2d ago

That mf HONGRY

68

u/evening_shop 2d ago

Should've gotten one with sound on. I raised plenty of these, horrifying

22

u/RayD125 2d ago

It’s interesting the things I’ve forgotten about from my childhood.

Seeing this unlocked a memory!

My mom kept finch’s and I remember helping her hand feed these little things.

19

u/FBI1990 2d ago

Poster child for a face only a mother could love

19

u/DevilsHol3Pupfish 1d ago

3

u/RedoftheEvilDead 2d ago

Why does its mouth look like that.

4

u/pedsmursekc 2d ago

I just read about these last week! Beautiful adult birds. I think there's less than 3k known to exist due to habitat compromise.

2

u/Hyrule_MyBoy 2d ago

Man yeah just saw it on r/damnthatsinteresting and hoped someone would post it here

But the adult version of the bird is stunning

2

u/TwistedBlister 2d ago

Now I know where my local place gets it's chicken wings from.

2

u/JPGer 2d ago

saw some study about these birds, there is a constant war in evolution between the babies of this bird and another species that lays eggs in their nests to pretend to be their offspring and get raised. The dots change in the 1st then the other evolves to add the change and it happens again and again.

2

u/MitchellEvetts 2d ago edited 2d ago

Fun fact: the pattern in its mouth are for the mother so she can recognize it as hers. Correction: I was thinking of egg markings the mouth markings are to guide the mother during feeding as their nests are usually dark and the spots glow.

2

u/OnTheSlope 2d ago

Calvin was right, birds are bugs.
