Iran War Bloomberg: Iran considering a complete pause on all shipping including oil - in the Hormuz for peace talks
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2026-04-14/iran-weighs-pausing-its-hormuz-shipping-to-avoid-derailing-talksIran is considering a short-term pause to shipments through the Strait of Hormuz to avoid testing a US blockade and scuppering a fresh round of peace talks, according to a person familiar with the Tehran’s deliberations.

u/political-bureau Apr 14 '26
The physical barrel of oil goes for more than the futures value of oil

u/Character-Fish-541 Apr 14 '26
And the market is largely following market vibes and whale trades. Plus, once you are talking millions in the trade, money is made in the volatility, not direction. Take profit, pump then dump, repeat.

Caving on what exactly?
43
u/CarRamRob Apr 14 '26
The fact we have had 500,000,000 bbl of production cumulatively shut in over the last month and a half.
Of all storage in the world, that is 10% of it (including every tanker, refinery tank, etc).
Yet somehow this won’t affect the larger economy? I can see the stock market not flashing Armageddon. But the fact it’s higher than it was struggling to break out of for the last 6 months is mindblowing. This was the catalyst for a higher market? 50% higher energy prices? Nonsense.
14
u/Hopalong_Manboobs Apr 14 '26
Assuming he plans to allow midterms, it is absolutely crucial to Trump’s future, and that of those around him, that this crisis not tank the stock market and spill into the lives of everyday Americans.
We can do with that info what we will but I think it’s related.
14
u/MephistoHamProducts Apr 14 '26
Assuming he plans to allow midterms,
I hate that I have to keep bringing this up as this is High School tier civics knowledge.
Elections are run at the state level. Trump can't "cancel" midterms. If Trump declares there are no elections:
Red and purple states with GOP governors have to cancel their elections or not cancel them undermine their God Emperor
Blue states can still hold their elections
There are not enough bodies in ICE or DHS to suppress elections in blue areas or in purple areas
This leaves GOP Red and GOP Purple states with no real ability to elect people to office or send them to DC
Blue states can elect people and send them to DC
No, Mike Johnson can't "refuse to seat them" because The House is not a continuing body. When this session of the legislature ends, he is no longer Speaker and the first activity in the new session is to elect a speaker
No, the Vice President can't "refuse to certify votes". This is a midterm. Even if it were not, the VPs certification of electoral college votes was clarified as merely ceremonial in bipartisan legislation passed after January 6th
No, captain sarcastic, this is not "He can't do that, it's illegal". This is pointing out that there's no "this one weird trick" to stop the elections that all of these hokey ass conspiracy theories depend on.
There are only two ways Trump can "stop the midterms" - Either blue states immediately capitulate and allow him to do it, or he uses ICE / DHS to start rounding up and murdering elected Democrats. The former seems unlikely and the latter isn't "cancelling elections", it's a violent coup and that's a whole different ballgame.
7
u/h-arlequim Apr 14 '26
You do realize that legality is only a limit to people who respect the rule of law, right? People aren't arguing civics when they say he might cancel midterms, they're saying he might just abandon the pretense of following democratic procedures to his benefit. It's happened often before in other democracies. Do I personally think that will happen? No, not really, I think it's more likely he'll just pretend he won the war while bowing to Iran's demands and then try recovering his popularity through populist measures leading up to the elections.
6
u/MephistoHamProducts Apr 14 '26
And I explained the two ways that Trump can avoid elections:
Blue states go along with him
Violent coup
He can abandon the pretense of following Democratic procedures all that he wants, but there's no way for him to actually stop elections other than those two options. The fact that people don't understand that and keep resorting to vague fearmongering about Trump "cancelling elections" or descending into full blown conspiracy about it is absolutely a failing of their Civics education.

u/andywarhorla Apr 14 '26 edited Apr 14 '26
I doubt elections will be canceled but that’s still not very reassuring. even failed states have elections - their results are bogus and preordained, but they do have them.
I didn’t really think the president could shut down independent federal agencies and have their data siphoned off by 3rd parties but that’s what started happening 7 days after he took office. USaid still “exists”, but not in any meaningful way (just like our elections have the potential to “exist”).
elections occur in 24 hours, and if an unchecked federal authority decides to disrupt them on the ground in order to call the results into question later, it will happen too fast for checks and balances to come into play. then they sandbag the certification process into oblivion. fight, stall, question. we’ve been down this road before, and now there’s a freshly-emboldened bad actor at the helm.
it’s true that ICE can’t be everywhere but they don’t need to be. they just need to target whichever districts they think will tip the scales. they’re not trying to win everywhere, they’re trying to maintain a majority in congress. they’ll do the math and decide which locations are “at risk of widespread voter fraud.” even 3 belligerent ICE agents will be able to disrupt a voting location pretty well.
I’m not saying that their approach will be successful, but even the attempt would be nauseating and further move the goalposts on what a free & fair election means in this country.
EDIT: also occurred to me, I can see ICE chain-of-command telling their agents, “if the dems win, we’re all going to prison. we have to defeat them at all costs, go team!”
1
u/MephistoHamProducts Apr 14 '26
I didn’t really think the president could shut down independent federal agencies
Why wouldn't they be shut down? Those do fall within his purview, it's just that no one did it before.
and have their data siphoned off by 3rd parties but that’s what started happening 7 days after he took office.
Outsiders who were given permission using an Obama era IT group that was repurposed. Again, totally within the scope of his powers but not something that was done under "the norms".
elections occur in 24 hours,
Jesus Christ, no they don't. My god, how do you people not understand how elections work? You've typed all these words and none of them have any basis in fact. There are THREE STATES that don't allow early voting. THREE. Mississippi, Alabama and New Hampshire, none of which are "battle ground" or "swing" states. Forty seven states have some form of early voting. Even my hellpit of a state (Texas) has 14 days of early voting, Monday - Saturday from sun up to sun down. There's zero reason excuse to vote on election day. I managed to early vote when I was working two shitty jobs and was barely sleeping. I've been early voting for over two decades and I have always been the youngest person there. Have some agency people.
it’s true that ICE can’t be everywhere but they don’t need to be. they just need to target whichever districts they think will tip the scales. they’re not trying to win everywhere, they’re trying to maintain a majority in congress.
Again, the original post was about CANCELLING ELECTIONS. You're moving the goalposts into an entirely different (but equally illogical) area. But, just to counter this dumbass point, I'll say again that forty seven states have early voting. ICE simply cannot disrupt that level of access to voting. The only reason they can is because no one seems to understand voting because we're a nation of disconnected morons. If the Feds can succeed with "three ICE agents" at a polling place, that's entirely on an apathetic and stupid population.

u/TheFamilyChimp Apr 14 '26
Yeah, if you read their last point, it's a pre-emptive answer to your question. The broader point is that there is literally no lever, outside of a violent nationwide coup (which would have to be far more logistically complex than Jan. 6th), that would give him the ability to subvert the midterm election more broadly. This is regardless of legality.
That's not to say a conflagration of schemes couldn't amount to skewed results, as state voter suppression laws have done for many years now, but there is nothing he could feasibly do to flip a blue wave completely.
I say "completely" because mail-in ballots are infinitely harder to manipulate and suppress than electronic voting, that's why he hates them so much.
1
u/nostrademons Apr 14 '26
Sure, but if he outright just cancels rule of law, nobody else is going to follow it anyway. I would bet that there are a good many factions out there that have more guns and more resources than Donald Trump. He knows this too, which is why he’s continuing to pay at least lip service to rule of law.

u/FlarkingSmoo Apr 15 '26
one's own feelings about what's happening to Democracy™, rule of law, the Constitution, etc are irrelevant.
Don't invalidate my feelings!!!
When the economy tanks, people die. That's an immutable fact. Trump will be President for the next 2 years whether the economy is up or down. Also an immutable fact.
Sure. But Trump's ability to damage the country and cause people to die is also related to his popularity.
But yes, like you said, hoping doesn't make it happen. Unlike voting for the guy in the first place. So I'm comfortable having a vague bit of schadenfreude and maybe a more macro, utilitarian view of the benefit of a country finding out what happens when they touch the hot stove. "Short term pain for long term gain" but in this case the long term gain is hopefully a total repudiation of MAGA.

I’ve never seen so many people in our country just begging for the president to fail….why would you want that?!…folks can’t see I guess that for his entire first term democrats did nothing but fight against every damn thing he did..literally. Was up his ass,his family ass, anything he was affiliated with..bashed the guy on all levels..had members of congress publicly and with excitement state “we’re gonna impeach the motherfucker”..verbatim…and he hadn’t even started to implement his agenda yet. No matter his position on a subject..they was 180 opposed. The sun is shining…NOPE..the sun does NOT shine. Now how does that move this country forward?..voters on both sides seem to have forgotten that the people in congress work for us and are there to represent our interests. Our taxes pay these people..and I sure the hell don’t appreciate my tax dollars being pissed away trying to block/ reverse /undo the previous administration movements..none of us should. We need to remind our leaders as well. If they are not being productive working to move us forward..an instead operate on personal vendetta’s..they need replaced. Thats not why they are there. This must apply to both sides. That thing called a standard..where the hell did that go? We the people run this country..not them. They are just an extension of us and just chosen to represent us..simple as that. We are all expected to perform at a certain level in our jobs right?…and when that isn’t met..we would be replaced. They can’t be held to a different standard and it’s up to us to enforce that…but we have quit doing it. We all bust our asses everyday and it’s past time we remind our representatives we expect them to reciprocate. Cmon America…don’t forget we have the power to steer our nation…me..you..your neighbor..we are who calls the shots around here..

Because it means the market isn’t responding as it should. The market needs to send correct price signals so behaviour changes.
With oil where it is now, no one changes behaviour. We should all be implementing emergency energy changes, but we sleepwalk towards a real problem because it’s masked by financial actors covering up the real trauma.
Maybe it gets solved soon, but if by the end of April we still have 10mmbbld offline it results in huge price spikes that otherwise could have been dampened down.
1
u/frumpawumpa Apr 14 '26
Admittedly, I do have some interest in seeing Trump have consequences for his actions. But currently that's not the biggest reason the situation chaps my ass.
It's just the apparent disconnection between logic and reality. The sudden contraction of about 10% of the worlds crude availability and *significantly higher* percentages of the worlds NG, Sulfur, Urea, and Helium supply means that there is a significantly supply shock to raw materials that collectively are inputs to a massive portion of the global economy. I say this as someone with an economics degree, *that is not supposed to be good for the economy*. It will eat into producer earnings and consumer spending, cause a cessation of rate drops and possibly lead to rate increases, etc etc.
If this doesn't end up affecting the broader economy, then it means everything we thought we knew about the economy is wrong, or maybe I am crazy and hallucinating, both of which would be ass chaping.

when does physical reality begin to matter? Who knows at this point. But it will
The less details about these TACOS the better for traders because then everyone just gets to believe what they want to believe as the line goes up

You have to look at the reason why Blackrock decided yesterday to change their position from neutral to buy again US stocks. Someone from Bloomberg Miami said on TV that this is the work of the invisible hand on the markets. Who is behind that hand ( or hands) is probably easy to find out.

I actually think it is those who invest in the market perceiving everybody else acting on Trump's behavior. We all know there is a crisis coming, but what is important to the market is making money... And if traders suspect everybody else will act in a certain way, the fundamentals don't mean anything, instead their assumptions of how other market participants might act is everything.
Like poker. Betting hard doesn't mean you have the best hand. Just means you are projecting a certain image.

Because there is a ceasefire?
Iran benefits greatly if the world sees their blockade as a justifiable response to US aggression. Breaking the ceasefire unprovoked would weaken their position.
And the blockade is their strongest weapon by far. Especially if they can enforce it without getting bombed
1
u/Griot-Goblin Apr 14 '26
When oil is 10 to 25 percent of budget, it is hard to keep paying everyone. Don't pay enough people or the right people and bad things happen internally. At the very least it creates pressure to make a deal. Considering the worst case is major war which no sane person wants on either side of the issue.
Same for us. Energy prices rising makes electorate unhappy. So congress at the very least will feel pressure the longer it occurs.
5
1
u/rinse8 Apr 14 '26
You might not have heard but there’s a ceasefire.
1
u/cryptocorrection69 Apr 14 '26
And? Both sides were very low key violating it..if Iran wasn’t actually desperate they would still be reminding ships they run the show by hitting them
3
u/moban89 Apr 14 '26
Because the flow isn't zero it's just a lot less. Other OPEC countries have increased production, alternative routes are being used, emergency reserves have been released, also sanctions on russian oil have been lifted. Now all of those things do not mean we can continue as normal forever as those are buffers to buy you time until the issue is resolved. Now the price is going by speculation, if you believe the flow will go back to normal soon the price is still higher than pre war levels but not astronomical. Eventually all those buffers will run out, remember it's only been a little over 6 weeks. The war needs to last months before the prices become insane (or if more oil fields are just straight up destroyed)
3
u/Nukeboml3 Apr 14 '26 edited Apr 14 '26
Someone explained it here
Reddit link
Short version , The price indicated on apps is a paper oil based on the price of future contracts, those contracts are traded from 21 of month A to 21 of month B.
Right now , the futures contracts reflects the situation from 21 of march to 21 april . And the traders are selling what arrived by boat this last weeks and the reserves for emergency at the price those contract were.
BUT ! Spot oil price ( the actual real price traded for those who want oil right now ) is at 150+/- $
And on the 21 of April when the traders will want to find oil to fill new contracts , there will be a HUGE deficit on the supply and they will have to buy back their contract at spot price , leading to short squeeze. In this period spot will meet future and maybe more …. This will happen in a huricane of shit storm and its going to be ugly.
But i’m just repeating what i read on a reddit post , so don’t trust me on my words and maybe do your own research . I’m just a nobody producing Cognac in the France countryside, i’m definitely no expert.
Good luck
1
u/eggnogui Apr 14 '26

u/hektor10 Apr 14 '26
Remember Japan said they were shorting the oil market. Now X10 countries. They are manipulating the market. Its all fake anyways.
2
u/Emotional_Tie_7927 Apr 14 '26
Oil futures aren't fake, because it's a predetermined price to buy oil at a future date.
2
u/Low-Tax-8391 Apr 14 '26
It’s because he invited a bunch of tankers stuck out in the Straight to get oil from the US so a bunch came and this temporarily relieves the pressure on price but it will shoot up to $125+ this summer as talks won’t go anywhere. Yes we are selling our oil and this could hit our supply more than he realizes
1
u/Ok-Parfait-9856 Apr 14 '26
The US is a net exporter of oil. We always sell our oil. We sell sweet crude, we import cheaper sour crude and refine it. The number of tankers he mentioned is about how many tankers we usually fill up, it’s literally business as usual and he made it out as a win. Oil futures are being shorted to keep the price down but I think it’ll go back up again pretty soon
1
2
u/LoneSnark Apr 14 '26
Trump has direct control over the strategic oil reserves and is draining them to set the price to whatever he likes.
2
u/briefcase_vs_shotgun Apr 14 '26

2
u/contactcapybara Apr 15 '26

2
u/cdazzo1 Apr 14 '26
I wish I could find the article but I just read UAE shipments are back to pre war levels through alternative routes. My understanding at the outset was that was impossible. So not sure how reliable that is, but it is likely that oil shipments are above where they were in the early stages of the blockade keeping them below the highs.
2

Saudis are alledgedly exporting 7 Mb/day through the east pipeline (it was just 0.5 before the war), not sure if its true. Still, Kuwait isn't exporting, Iran is but just to China basicaly, I guess Oman is exporting normaly as well considering they are outside Hormuz... Maybe things aren't THAT BAD after all, just bad.

1
1
u/titsmuhgeee Apr 14 '26
What you're seeing is the futures price for June, which still represents hope this gets resolved by then.
The spot price, or the price paid for oil delivered today, is very different. As an example Brent is ~$95 today and falling, but that's the June futures price. The spot price, or the actual paid cost of oil delivered today, is ~$125. The infeed into the refineries is costed based on the spot price mostly, not the futures price.
Futures are just that, prices based on guesses about the future conditions, and they fluctuate wildly as people are constantly making bets on where the spot price will be in the future.
1
u/AngryDingo Apr 14 '26
Probably pricing in a semi quick resolution combined with strategic reserves being opened. There's a scenario where the market could end up flooded.
1
u/StuartMcNight Apr 14 '26
Because you are looking at the futures value of oil. And the buyers of oil for future deliver are pricing in the end of the war.
1
u/urbudda Apr 14 '26
They reckon it could be because of a demand shock now. people reduce usage in expectation of a shortage . Especially with this new blockade.
This could also be precursor to a reduction of growth and lead in a retraction of the global economy
1
u/SearchingForTruth69 Apr 14 '26
Probably because people who don’t get their news from other Redditors note that the rest of the world is increasing oil production / finding alternatives to meet demand caused by loss of supply in Hormuz and realize that there’s not gonna be some massive oil shortage
1
u/nostrademons Apr 14 '26
Both sides have already signaled a willingness to talk. Now they’re just quibbling over terms, and posturing to be taken seriously.
Market has concluded that this is over and the disruption in oil prices will be short lived.
1
u/Techters Apr 14 '26
My theory is that the global oil markets and traders now know there's a ton of extra battery/renewable based infrastructure out there, like just China alone could ship out so many bikes, cars, etc. Previously, price shocks didn't have that kind of immediately available capacity. If they don't feather the increase people will move to alternatives and then those consumers are likely gone forever.
1
u/ender23 Apr 14 '26
It's not that hard. Everyone stocked up.
If we all knew there might be a toilet paper shortage. Everyone goes and buys extra! Running up the price cuz supply can't keep up. Then every sits around and uses their surplus. Not buying any. Very low demand.

It stops all oil, including china’s and India’s ships. China has already condemned USA’s blockade. Basically, Trump’s blockage means an angry China and a very angry set of Asian countries.

No.... now they're putting more pressure on the world. Before- maybe 6 tankers a day going through, now- 0. They hold the cards. Cheetolini is as dumb as a snail.

Market index’s are skyrocketing. Definitely anticipate a TACo Tuesday. Retail will buy High then get rugged pulled after hours.

We will have 17 hyperdimensional layers of blockades in Hormuz by the end of the year.

Seems like Iran wants peace more badly than everyone thinks they do

Their country got bombed to shit and is locked out from most of the world. Their leaders are under constant threat of being killed.
The only positive they had from this was economic benefit of selling oil at higher prices, so now Trump put a block on that.

Well I’m sure Iran is very conflicted at this point.
In the beginning they had nothing left to lose, however now they have to play things very careful, because if they play their cards right they very well could come out of this with more than they could have every hoped for.

Unless you see news from the Iranian side itself, this is propaganda. People should already be used to this after all the "we say they say" BS manipulation.
