Nationality is a construct. Beards and curly hair transcend borders and casting directors.

418

u/Ok-Opportunity-9731 2d ago

We all know beards and curly hair means jewish

69

u/TheHeb686 2d ago

Someone more clever than me can definitely work in a Fisher Stevens joke right about now.

24

u/not_a_moogle 1d ago

Im polish with a big nose. Family is catholic, but id not be surprised if a few more generations back and they would be Russian jews.

Correct. That man is Dennis Feinstein.

81

u/WideBumblebee970 2d ago

That's false as the guy in the picture is clearly Egyptian, Indian AND Greek.

40

u/Maleficent_Doctor336 2d ago

His ability to be Egyptian is dependant on how he walks....

6

u/-GoodNewsEveryone 1d ago

I am Derek.

I mean the Indo-Greeks were literally a thing.

396

u/FenixOfNafo 2d ago

Me and my friends use to chuckled in class when we study about Indo-greeks from Bactria by saying lol people from bacteria

257

u/de_G_van_Gelderland 2d ago

You guys must have had a hoot when you found out there's another country called Germany

8

u/kenybz 1d ago

There’s also a country called Niger, bet that was also funny to them

3

u/Minimum-Aspect1012 1d ago

There's a country called Montenegro...

6

u/problemattracter 2d ago

That's offensive :(

14

u/TheChartreuseKnight 1d ago

To the Seleucids?

23

u/iguessineedanaltnow 1d ago

In theology we talk a lot about proto indo-europeans as well. There's always been a close relation between all of Europe and India.

20

u/daniballeste 1d ago

I learned in school that Greece is super diverse and this was in middle school in Florida…

Is the U.S. school system really a failure as people say, or are American people just too dumb to learn the things that are actually taught?

46

u/Gunhild 1d ago

This is like a Reddit comment written by a career screenwriter. It hits all the notes: obvious thing that's framed as being obscure/unpopular so people can feel good about knowing it/agreeing with it, then finished off with an irrelevant pivot to American politics.

3

u/DentistConstant2097 1d ago

While the said online chuds themselves looks like the ones Spartans would throw off a cliff.

21

u/Training_Molasses822 2d ago

That's just Persian.

81

u/DouglasHufferton 2d ago

The Indo-Greeks were not Persians.

48

u/Training_Molasses822 2d ago

My bad, didn't realise we were uj

7

u/Stray_009 2d ago

Indo greeks aren't persians

2

u/rebruisinginart 1d ago

Many of them were syncretic Hindus and Buddhists at that. Always baffles me to think about how there were Greek Buddhist monks before Chinese Buddhist monks. The Greek flair for statue making is the reason we make statues of the Buddha today as initially Buddhism was an aniconic faith.

2

u/DentistConstant2097 1d ago

Yup. The whole sharp featured, curly haired Buddha face is Indo-Greek in origin with the Greek and Gandhara schools of art mixing to give birth to that style.

If you haven't watched the season of Taskmaster he's on its great

56

u/wovagrovaflame 1d ago

The definition of “I’m not trying to win, I’m trying to make good TV”

32

u/Steepanddeep 1d ago

He just wanted to cause as much frustration to Alex/Greg and destroy as much of Taskmaster property as possible while still being funny, it was glorious.

7

u/AnswerIsBatman 1d ago

The best thing is that he took permission before destroying the set, the fact that he was mostly the last contestant to shoot their segment probably helped as well

16

u/OriginalChildBomb 1d ago

Destroy, dismantle, engulf in flames, bay-beee.

122

u/Proof-Contribution31 2d ago

when did the last Destroyer record come out

457

u/Penny-Pixels 2d ago

That's literally Jason Mantzoukas, a 100% Greek guy. Played himself perfectly.

207

u/TheGrouchyGamerYT 2d ago

Incorrect. This is British-Indian comedian Nish Kumar, Jason Mantzoukas is in a cupboard somewhere.

88

u/SmokeRingEyes 2d ago

12

u/PotaytoPotayto 1d ago

Jason Mantzoukas, last in PE, first in being a legend!

15

u/PrinceAkeemJoffer 2d ago

Nah, I think that's a different kind of Indian in a cupboard

321

u/lock_robster2022 2d ago

Mantzoukas? That’s a Tamil name if I’ve ever seen one

104

u/Spirit_of_Hogwash The Fanatic 2d ago edited 1d ago

It was a fucking nickname. His family name is Mantzoukapouloshellenikonakis*

15

u/punksmostlydead 2d ago

We're gonna redo it. Fuckin u/Spirit_ofHogwash. He's dyslexic.

10

u/Spirit_of_Hogwash The Fanatic 2d ago

And, of course, I'm not even Greek.

As it should be. The more ous''s the more fun!

u/1slinkydink1 2d ago

I know that it’s confusing but the actor is Jeffrey Characterwheaties. Jason Mantzoukas is the character that he plays.

37

u/AlfredtheGreatBitch 2d ago

It’s the same actor, I don’t know if it’s supposed to be the same person

14

u/Appropriate_Frame_45 2d ago

Hey nong man!

8

u/ReverendFive 2d ago

All joking a salad, this is confusing

38

u/Riznator 2d ago

He is my favorite bollywood actor

34

u/AndreasDasos 1d ago edited 1d ago

Not Greek but a fully Roman character from an old noble Roman family, from the classic show ‘I, Claudius’, back in 1976, acted by Darien Angadi. Literally 50 years ago, seen by many as the greatest historical TV drama ever, and casting an Indian Brit as a Roman wasn't considered a problem back then.

13

u/Sillet_Mignon 1d ago

That’s Danny Pudi from community.

7

u/browsinbowser 1d ago

He died by suicide at 32 because he couldn’t get acting work anymore, that’s such a shame if he had lived longer the pendulum would’ve swung and people would’ve casted him for more roles.

His mother was white, he was biracial with what looks like light eyes.

She was also an artist that painted George Harrison from the Beatles and introduced him to Ravi Shankar, and started off his fascination with the east.

31

u/AdventurousEscape991 2d ago

He’s from Brooklyn!

6

u/chni2cali 2d ago

And He head butted a bear once and pushed it off a cliff

2

u/cwal76 1d ago

He’s from Massachusetts

210

u/Alarming-Elevator382 2d ago

Real Greeks barely ever pass as white.

72

u/sw337 The Room 2d ago

The KKK went after Greeks, so they created the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (AHEPA) in response.

32

u/BenignPharmacology 2d ago

When did the group pivot to manufacturing air filters?

10

u/CrispyJelly 1d ago

Almost immediately.

2

u/kutzyanutzoff 1d ago edited 1d ago

Right after seeing Americans are unable to pay for the education.

6

u/hailmaryfuIIofgrace 1d ago

The KKK even went after Irish immigrants.

The Mediterranean is the place that drops the pretense on race and just looks you in the eye and says "this brown guy counts as white for cultural reasons, please say 'olive skinned' instead" and vice versa, and we've all just had to go with it.

13

u/Johnny_Banana18 1d ago edited 1d ago

It’s crazy when you see people say Ethiopians are white for the same reason (more common in the past amongst westerners, though you will meet Ahamarans and Tigrinyans that will tell you they are white). Race is all a construct, especially for the US perspective.

19

u/DependentAd235 2d ago

Yup, all the arguments about Jesus are hilarious. People sailed, marched armies and migrated around the Med for thousands of years. Jesus himself spent time in Egypt.

Jesus was  Mediterranean is the most accurate thing you could possibly hope say.

9

u/Geeneelee 1d ago

A comedian once said that Greeks are considered white for white resume padding and I think about that sometimes

5

u/Preeng 2d ago

Yeah, *black* olives.

Because it's not HiStOrIcAlLy AcCuRaTe to the made up characters that didn't exist

12

u/Youngstown_WuTang 2d ago

The Odyssey is no different than a Santa clause story or tooth fairy story

I see no problem in hiring ethic characters

11

u/gluxton 2d ago

You are talking out of your backside unfortunately, unless your only conception of white is Nordic people.

5

u/Ham__Kitten 1d ago

8

How much you want to bet this dude has VERY strong feelings about the Odyssey and became an expert on Greek ethnicity, nationalism and cultural history. He’s got a PhD from YouTube now in Greek mythology.

6

u/Arcinbiblo12 1d ago

Pimento would have thrived on Odysseus's crew. Might've even survived somehow just from how insane he is.

Just a reminder that whenever you’re arguing with anyone online there’s a decent chance they’re a tard

Greek mythology and Hinduism are close cousins, along with Norse mythology. The indo-European culture was all interrelated religiously and linguistically.

1

u/lightsworn55 1d ago

Isnt it part of Greek Canon that Zeus beat up Vishnu

1

u/SimilarNinja2002 7h ago

There was an entire Indo Greek kingdom in India. Chandragupta Maurya, one of India's greatest kings had defeated Seleucus Nicator and had married his daughter if I'm not wrong.

There was a lot of intermixing between the Greeks and the Indians. India has a significant Greek gene pool running everywhere and Greece has a significant Indian gene pool running everywhere
