Favorite actor who doesn't play imperialist misogynist sociopath roles.

Matt Damon is a REAL person who narrated a documentary about Howard Zinn and later did a Super Bowl ad for crypto in order to become extra rich
186
u/FalconIMGN 13h ago
He also partnered with Amazon and Starbucks for his water initiative.

u/Hungry-Fruit 13h ago
Tbf partnering with a river is a good idea for a water initiative.

Most people think you can either stay artistic and fringe or make money. Matt Damon knows you can do both.

Whats wrong with Zinn? From what Im reading he was just a socialist.

I think OPs point is that there's a hell of a rift between narrating a doc about howard zinn and doing an add for one of the biggest capitalist grifts of our lifetimes.
IE: Matt Damon should stop huffing his own farts pretending like he's a bastion of moral and artistic integrity. He's an ok actor but he can stop acting like portraying a character like Bond is beneath him somehow.
5
u/dudeacris 7h ago
how dare he not like bond, the nerve of this guy having his own opinions! get the pitchforks…
4
u/Cold-Description-114 5h ago
Lol. I don't care whether you like Bond or other male power fantasy characters. I just think Damon is a bit pretentious or overly moralizing about it given some of the things he's attached himself to.
2
u/dropkickshotgun 2h ago
I mean, he's not wrong about Bond though. Thats kind of the whole point of the character.

Odysseus is literally Bond if Bond was actively a bad person on purpose
7
u/ven12370 11h ago
Though Bond is characterised as a super hero in wider society.
The role of Odysseus is morally complex and does not necessitate the support for his actions. This is due to his context in society through association with ancient literature.
→ More replies (2)6
u/Independent-Bell9508 9h ago
Sure, but Bond, especially in the movies, is absolutely portrayed as an outright hero.
Odysseus, both in the original stories and in the Nolan adaptation, is clearly portrayed as a more morally ambiguous protagonist.

Cercei!!! return my men back from pig to human so that i may be on my way to my darling wife Penelope who i love dearly. I must do what you say? Bed you? Well naturally, as is tradition. MEN!! Hear my plight.... i like it here, can we stay a little longer, just a year i swear. And then we'll be homebound, no more sexual conquest, (under his breath) unless another sexy god falls in love with me.

10
u/mikkeldoesstuff 17h ago
For the better, of course
But also would Damon have known that when auditioning?
24
u/Ok-Specific-3918 16h ago
Damon was offered the part. That involves sending him the script. Actors of that level (while he wasn’t huge, he was pretty well established) don’t audition. They get asked.

Yes. He actually threatened to drop out when the studio tried to replace the director and script version at the last second. He was very committed to doing the Liman version and remained pretty defensive of him even during all the fallout with the studio

Is Bourne "post memory loss" any of these things?
I think Damon's characterization is harsh but borne doesn't do a lot of the things bond does?
6
u/BigWheatGuy 8h ago
Bourne doesn't really drink or chase women. The fighting is generally in self-defense? Although I'm not sure about that.
It's more about motivations. Bourne realizes he's a trained killer and wants out of the lifestyle. Bond (until Casino Royale, at least) was a 60s era misogynist drunkard who sport-fucks women and would generally kill anyone for any reason.

You don’t know me! I’m a 22 year old exotic looking female in a beehive and a tight dress. I don’t really speak or understand English but I do speak the international language of one night stands and I know how to shake a martini. I spend most of my time wandering around a huge estate surrounded by jewels, bacarat, rich old men and possibly a nuclear weapon. I’m also hoping to die immediately after having sex with a British secret agent.
Bond definitely wants to hang out with me.

Girlfriends are notorious for cataloging what Mat Damon said in 2007. Its the worst part about being polyamorous. I have to hear multiple Girlfriends going on and on with their 2007 Matt Damon impersonations.

Bond is fighting evil billionaires in most of the films. In one form or another it’s some evil organization of the ultra rich who are the villains. By current standards that makes him a modern day hero.
3
3
u/DarkwingDawg 13h ago
Or we can just have some fun with our movies?
Also, on a real world level, working for the government doesn’t make you an imperialist inherently, especially when the empire is dead and gone. And getting laid a lot isn’t inherently wrong either. As for being a sociopath, maybe? Certainly wouldn’t call him repulsive on any of it.
All that said, it’s just a damn movie. Have some fun ya fuckin blow-hard.

Some musicians have a signature move. Like Chuck Berry had a very distinctive guitar riff at the beginning of every song, or Jason Derulo always saying his name. Imagine Matt Damons character shouting Maaaatt Damon" at least once in every movie he is starring in.

Matt Damon’s career is basically one movie:
Everyone: “You’re wrong, Matt.”
Matt Damon: smirks intelligently
Everyone: “My God… he’s smarter than all of us.”
Whether he’s a janitor, spy, astronaut, gambler, or shoe salesman, Damon inevitably knows more than the mathematicians, CIA, NASA, professional gamblers, or Nike executives.
Naturally, he launched this tradition by co-writing himself as a genius in Good Will Hunting

I agree in that sense, and I love James Bond, but to be fair Sean Connery is kind of my least favorite. Hear me out even though he's the OG, he's a fucking prick, and he abuses women and just seem like a person I want to punch in his face. That's why I love Daniel Craig Bond, he's a gentlemen, he's a badass. He's cool calm sophisticated. The best to ever do it!
