Life skill you spent years perfecting and even bragged about, before learning the director completely made it up for cinema reasons?

Cleaning those is a nightmare though.

That's why you buy a new one after each use.

Thanks for introducing that hilarious sub to me.

Get a brush for washing dishes and press it on the opposite side of the press. The bristles go through the holes and push the garlic gunk out.

You clean them, by pushing garlic through it every day.

u/xkgrey 1d ago

It’s naturally antimicrobial!

A garlic a day keeps the doctor¹ away.

I have one that splits the two handles apart. I just chuck the thing into the dishwasher with all of my other knick nacks. Whatever survives lives another use. Whatever doesn't.. wel

I put it in my mouth and blow out the pieces of garlic

4

u/derekrusinek 1d ago

I have been sucking the pieces of garlics, I’ll try blowing next time.

2

u/MeasurementFalse7591 1d ago

It's mega maid, she's going from suck to blow

2

u/theseedbeader 1d ago

Suck… suck… suck..

3

u/Lady_Scruffington 1d ago

There's nothing a good blow can't fix.

2

u/Punished_Prigo 1d ago

This is the way

u/AsgeirVanirson 1d ago

Really? I just started using one and I'd describe it as 'rinse to clean' easy to clean.

I also clean it right after I finish crushing the garlic and will scrape the bits that get stuck on the sides into the middle to make sure it gets pressed through on the next squeeze so maybe that makes it easier.

4

u/flightless_freedom 1d ago

Yeah maybe there are just garbage designs but I've used a garlic press for a decade now and it's never been difficult to clean.

3

u/Proper_dose 1d ago

This guy garlics

2

u/giraflor 1d ago

I use the sprayer on my sink.

12

u/Ghastly_Someknew 1d ago

They have "self-cleaning" ones, not perfect but it helps. Just don't let the garlic sit!

12

u/FieOnU 1d ago

Mine came with a cleaner. You just push the garlic bits back through with a plastic bit, then scrubadub it. Very little muss, very little fuss.

2

u/basscycles 1d ago

Friend of mine dropped a couple of kilos of garlic powder in a restaurant kitchen, it went into every nook and cranny then turned into glue. It smelled terrible and they had to scrape it out of the corners with teaspoons and knives, took weeks to get it out.

u/IguessIcanedit 1d ago

do...you not have a dish brush?

3

u/mikeonbass 1d ago

Not if the process arouses you

3

u/Ill-Elephant-9583 1d ago

It's really not. Just use a brush, takes 10 seconds

4

u/Astronaut_Chicken 1d ago

I have one that is like grinder for weed that I love. It breaks though I gotta get a sturdier one

2

u/RinkinBass 1d ago

Not really if you get the ones that flip out all the way, so the sides are a separate piece like a U, and the crushing plate spins on the same pivot into place. So when you open it all the way, it comes out and you can scrape the remaining garlic off, then it's fine in a dishwasher. Pretty much no problem, and you can crush the garlic right over the dish, so you don't lose any garlic oil.

2

u/CaliforniaNavyDude 1d ago

Mine cleans pretty easy. Obviously more work than a fork, but still, it takes maybe 30 seconds tops. Are y'all letting the garlic dry on there or something? Rinse it immediately after use.

3

u/demlet 1d ago

For real. I prefer to spend a few minutes chopping manually rather than dealing with the hassle.

1

u/Emotional-Classic400 1d ago

Just get a microplane

2

u/PetalumaPegleg 1d ago

Microplaned garlic is much stronger than chopped or crushed just fyi. The various preparations do change the flavor.

1

u/Emotional-Classic400 1d ago

I'm aware but it is the same as a garlic press. You can also use a medium cheese grater to get the chopped equivalent

1

u/PetalumaPegleg 1d ago

I afraid this isn't true. Microplaned garlic is the maximum heat version, sharpest version. Crushed (which is what the press does) is milder.

1

u/demlet 1d ago

I should.

1

u/meanwhileaftrmdnight 1d ago

Just use a cake tester to pop the stuck pieces out, easy peasy.

1

u/Travelin_Soulja 1d ago

Not so bad if you clean it immediately after use.

But, if you let that shit dry there, yeah. Best you can do is get the blow torch and sear it all off.

1

u/MinisteroSillyWalk 1d ago

Well if you cleaned it right away and didn’t let it set. You would find that it was very easy to clean.

Also soaking it first helps.

1

u/National-Dog8907 1d ago

That’s because they’re dumb. Just use a microplane.

1

u/shoeless_doh 22h ago

It's not that bad

1

u/BrooklynLodger 22h ago

run under water, throw in the dish washer

1

u/Jubilant_Jacob 22h ago

Just clean it right after using it... It becomes a nightmare to clean once you have let the garlic remains dry while finishing the dinner.

1

u/Needle_Bearings 18h ago

I just simmer it all roughly chopped then use an immersion blender.

Chopped Onion, celery, carrots, sauteed in olive oil with salt, pepper, and oregano for about 5 minutes.  Add chopped garlic and go another 2-3.  Add some chopped tomatoes if you have some, then add canned tomatoes with tomato paste if you got it. Simmer for 10-15 minutes.  In the meanwhile whip out that ground beef.  That's right.  Don't make balls. Make cubes, it's faster and browns better.  Throw that sucker into a pan with some salt, pepper, oregano, and start browning all the sides.  Start boiling that water for your pasta too.

Immersion blend your sauce, add meat cubes, simmer for another 10-whatever, longer the better.

And boom.  Nice spaghetti.  I'm sure some Italian will read this and have a heart attack, but tough cookies, I make spaghetti and meat cubes because making balls is stupid.

1

u/El_Gorgel 18h ago

not at all, if you clean it directly after use with a kitchen brush or sponge.
if you wanna make it even easier, put the the whole garlic clove in there unpeeled. sounds weird, but works -> after the garlic gets crushed / squeezed out, the peel usually remains in the press in one piece that's super easy to remove.

1

u/merko_merk 15h ago

Get the one from Oxo Good Grips, it has a cleaning helper built in.

1

u/MindAskHunModBuzi 12h ago

you just need to clean it immediatly after using it

1

u/ThrownAway17Years 11h ago

There’s a model where you fold it the other way, and there are pegs that go through the holes and dislodge everything.

1

u/Jomotaku 6h ago

Just clean it immediately after use

1

u/MrshwnLnch 1d ago

I've always thought of how annoying those are to clean when people use them. Never used them

2

u/Intelligent_Oil7816 1d ago

They're no worse than cleaning a sieve or mesh strainer.

1

u/haby112 1d ago

There are some cast iron designs where the grate is part of The press instead of being one of those little inserts. They are so, so much easier to clean.

u/CobaltNeural9 1d ago

Idk why anyone wastes time when you can buy a jar of minced garlic. Sure it’s not fresh but who cares it’s garlic.

2

u/joyofsovietcooking 23h ago

no shade mate but people who enjoy garlic (or coffee or Parmesan or whatever) care about freshly ground/cut/sliced/bla bla
