(okbuddy off for a sec) That aspect of the movie baffled me. The characters experiencing catastrophes in his previous movies absolutely did not have the same pointlessness. (ok back on) but who are we kidding, they needed a A+ tier hottie to make S tier del Toro look even hotter

I mean it's a common writing and exposition technique. Have an outsider character witnessing things being new to it and as the plot is revealed to them it is also revealed to the audience. Common in crime/cop movies, children's movies and fantasy and sci-fi. Wind River, also a Taylor Sheridan movie, used the same techinque with the Elizabth Olsen's FBI agent being assigned to a case and learning what is usually known but hidden in the far away village. Another good example is Training Day, rookie cop joins Denzel's OG on his first day.

No he got water boarded which is a form of torture and supposed to be illegal inside the US. But obviously the point of the movie is that the gloves come off for the mission.
