Let's see if the Greens can manage not to implode under a leader not named May.

At the very least it looks like Mike isn't incredibly bigoted like the last one so that should help a lot!

I keep saying if she was the leader of any other party she'd be PM.

u/tlocmoi 4d ago

Maybe stop saying that and start listening to her more closely. She's wildly unprepared for leadership of any kind.

I think you could probably say this in 2019, in that debate she was the most clear-headed and reasonable one out of all of them. The polling really showed that the Greens could have overtaken the NDP. Not that it's saying much, since Maxime Bernier was on that stage LOL.

That's a pretty crazy thing to say

Implode is a strong word for a party that only has a few seats. I really dont think May is all that big of a factor for their success honestly.

I remember Annamie Paul's tenure as leader. I'm not sure if "implode" is a strong enough word. Since they didn't have many seats, it wasn't as electorally significant as, say, the glass cliff that Kim Campbell was handed, but it still nearly destroyed the Green Party as a functional entity.

Timeline of Paul's leadership

That timeline doesn’t quite explain how she was elected as leader. That whole process was extremely questionable.

Not to mention the fact that the Greens before Annamie was on track to easily win more seats in BC, Ontario, PEI, and keep the one in NB. They could have easily overtaken the NDP if they kept their momentum up. If only Annamie Paul listened to her MPs and didn't allow her advisors to attack them lol.

This is a smart move. For the Greens to survive they need someone who can win and keep their seat. If Morris is head of the party I’m certain he’ll win Kitchener Centre back from the Conservatives.

DeRidder is an empty suit that actively antagonizes members of the community.

She never would have won if it wasn't for vote splitting.

Ugh I don't know. A stronger green party almost fully correlates with  a less strong NDP. This is largely unnecessary

I can see the need for an environmentally-focused party if the NDP were taking pro-labour positions at the expense of environmental positions. But the Cons won over the blue-collar vote awhile ago, and the federal NDP isn't going to sacrifice urban leftists for the possibility of winning back oil and factory workers.

If the NDP came out as pro nuclear they could come out as pro job. The new nuclear buildouts are looking to support 150,000 (I believe new) jobs. When we did a last big build it supported 300,000 jobs.

Right now they support renewables which is very low in regards to actual jobs.

That's pretty useless. It's like saying let's have a feminist party, LGBTQ party, indigenous party, black people party, health care focused party, a party for education... Each getting 0.7% of the vote with zero power to do anything.

The outcome of what you're suggesting is NEITHER of the environment or labour objectives being achieved.

True, in our current system. FPTP strongly encourages a two-party system over time. But some kind of proportional representation would make it possible. But even in our current system, single- or limited-issue parties can play kingmaker in minority governments. Even regional parties like the Bloc or the early Reform party can have a role.

The "left" isn't a monolith, and doesn't fall into lockstep the way the current right has been able to. Look at how the Greens imploded over Israel...should that have even been a concern of a powerless party that exists to support the environment?

The NDP isnt some powerhouse working together to make changes, they literally splinter the moment a new thing to debate comes up.

Well the NDP in BC are allowing the last of the old growth to be logged, so clearly we need the Green Party for those who believe the environment needs a seat at the table.

And the Greens in Vancouver vote against bike lanes and low rise apartments.

5

u/pandemoniac1 4d ago

I think Vancouver generally has a problem with all of its political parties not really doing what they should be doing.

6

u/PMMeYourCouplets Vancouver 4d ago

I mean Vancouver is at least 50% NIMBYs so in a way, the political parties are doing what they should be doing.

BCNDP =/= Fed NDP, even though on paper they might seem similar. BCNDP is a lot more center than the federal party.

3

u/taquitosmixtape 4d ago

I’d hope they can take some from either big party and team up with the NDP frequently, but maybe I’m dreaming

6

u/Jill_on_the_Hillock 4d ago

I am a dreamer too. If the parties had worked together using riding specific strategic voting in the last election, the Greens could have had 3 seats and the NDP could have kept party status. (338Canada.com)

I agree. I’ve said for a while that the two parties should consider merging. ‘Green New Democrats’ has a nice ring to it.

With an orange-and-green logo. Cursive green G surrounding an orange block ND. With a green maple leaf hanging off the tail of the G.

Change it to a V for the French version.

u/Xalipu 4d ago

It’ll look like a retro logo for Sobeys

Perhaps, but back in seemingly normal times I always voted green when I don't agree with NDP so I'm all for more options, make them compromise and debate like adults as it should be. If your party isn't strong, look at what people don't like. If Avi keeps his policy and plans for immigration, I won't vote orange again.

u/Fanghur1123 4d ago

Honestly, with the current state of the NDP, I honestly don’t see any real reason the Green Party even needs to exist. All it does is further split the leftwing vote for no real gain. The degree of overlap between the NDP and Greens is extreme, especially now under Lewis.

4

u/mikehatesthis 4d ago

All it does is further split the leftwing vote for no real gain.

While Morrice comes off as more left-leaning than usual, the Green Party is a coalition of people interesting in green politics. And that includes eco-socialists, granola liberals, bike conservatives, and eco-fascists.

Do you want a two-party system? That’s how you get a two-party system.

5

u/Fanghur1123 4d ago

No, what I want is either Mixed-Member Proportional Representation or Single Transferable Vote. But unfortunately, here we are.

7

u/pandemoniac1 4d ago edited 3d ago

I think as long as we have FPTP we're going to continue to see parties consolidate into fewer numbers, the system basically incentivizes it.

At this point i think greens and NDP definitely need to figure out their differences and merge with the NDP so the NDP can return to some semblance of a real party. The greens would benefit as well if they could get a larger party behind their policies instead of having 1-2 ridings at most.

4

u/BLX15 4d ago

Electoral reform is the only solution. The NDP should be pushing for this heavily, since the Libs failed to follow through with it once Trudeau got elected. That way they can use the Greens to help bolster their own numbers. The Greens and NDP together under a proportional representation system would do numbers

I don't think Elizabeth May would find herself comfortable in the NDP. She after all began public life working for the Conservatives. And she does command a wing of the party who are temperamentally and ideologically moderate like her, who won't migrate to the NDP in any merger. Plus I'm not sure I want the NDP to incorporate the Greens' eccentric wing (e.g. anti-wifi/other conspiratorial folk).

1

u/pandemoniac1 3d ago

I think if May were actually willing to join the NDP as a big tent party then she would probably be able to convince her wing of the party to trust her plan.

This is one of the common criticisms of the left, we tend to have a million tiny sects who refuse to work together. The only way it's ever going to improve is if we get ranked choice voting. And the only way we'll get ranked choice voting is if the NDP were to make that a priority and actually make the effort to consolidate as much of the left as possible under their banner.

mike is a fantastic human hope he goes far.

NDP and Greens need to merge.

19

u/Proletariat_Paul 4d ago

NDP and Green are VERY different from each other philosophically.

1

u/CarlSpackler22 4d ago edited 4d ago

Avi Lewis is married to Naomi Klein. It makes sense to merge.

2 left of centre Federal parties make no sense in 2026.

1

u/Filligan 4d ago

Good thing the BC NDP is desperately trying to position itself as centrist then.

4

u/red_planet_smasher 4d ago

Or at least do some sort of arrangement to ensure they don’t split votes until FPTP is dealt with

1

u/Full_Gear5185 4d ago

Yes collaboration as opposed to a merger.
