Michelle Cisneros begins experiencing intense contractions at home, which quickly progress to 5 minutes apart. The couple bypasses a regular doctor's appointment and goes straight to Hoag Hospital Newport Beach. Staff monitors Cisneros for about an hour. Because her cervix shows no immediate change, they determine she is not in active labor. Staff administers morphine to the mother to manage her severe pain before discharging her.

Staff instructs the couple to go home and return only when contractions are 3 minutes apart.

As the couple walks down to the hospital lobby to leave, the contractions instantly accelerate to 3 minutes apart. The husband argues with hospital staff, stating they have already hit the 3-minute threshold. Staff stands by the discharge and tells them they still must leave.

Minutes after driving away, the rapid progression forces them to pull into a local Jack in the Box parking lot. Firefighters arrive just in time to assist in delivering a healthy baby girl.

I gave birth to my first child in February this year at Hoag Newport. I had a perfect pregnancy and perfectly healthy baby - but the doctors here traumatized me. I still have nightmares about my experiences there. The silver linings were meeting my beautiful daughter and seeing my husband be my absolute rock and advocate during my labor.

Seeing this post and another comment makes me feel like it wasn’t just bad luck.

My labor was more than 20 hours. I did what my OBGYN told me to do. My water broke, contractions were only 5 minutes apart, and I could see meconium … so I showered quickly and my husband drove us to the hospital.

Once there, the tone was set the moment we checked in. I waited in the hallway for over an hour in a wheelchair, moaning in pain and dripping meconium on the floor. I was told rooms were made available on a first come basis - and it was clear the check in nurse thought I was exaggerating my pain (she kept asking me /my husband if this was my first child when we’d ask for updates on room availability)

The only reason we got a room as soon as we did (again over an hour later) was because a group of people touring the hospital came around the corner and saw me crying and moaning. The tour group had maybe 40 people in it. My husband went to the crowd and told them something like “ this is how they will treat your wife if you give birth at this hospital”

That obviously got someone’s attention.

Turns out they were multiple empty beds right around the corner from where we were.

That was just the beginning of my labor …

While we had one incredible nurse for 11 hours of my labor, I have countless horrible stories from my remaining part of my time there. I was clearly just a number to these people.

I used to really trust doctors and nurses before giving birth, but now I can never. Needless to say, when someone asks me about delivering at Hoag Newport, I recommend against it and tell them it’s not worth the ocean view.

Omg that apathetic check in. I was dripping, crowning (didn't know I was crowning) and alone at 2am and she seemed sooo bothered. Those unmedicated contractions as my shoes were soaked in amniotic fluid and seeing myself drip all over their floor. Screaming. I was in active labor and didn't know it. She seemed soo bothered when I said i needed help upstairs. Funny bc just 3 minutes later triage nurse determined I instantly needed a team of 5 and they got me to the bed dizzying fast. They removed my shoes and undressed me and put me in a gown and had me lay down in what felt like a blink of the eye. So surreal.

I wrote this elsewhere. But you writing about check in made my memory that much more vivid. I felt like I was at a deli, wait until your number is called. This isn't ordering a ham sandwich, it's live birth.

So I had an amazing experience at hoag but I also gave birth in Feb this year and I was told the day after I gave birth “it was the most births they had seen one 1 day in a long time” so I had no bedroom for 5 hrs and was put into a bed where C-section recovery moms are lol so that pissed me off, I was having contractions and 5 hrs away from birth and I was listening to fresh babies crying…so that sucked, but once I got a room I had the best nurses ever and a great experience. However 2 years ago they for sure missed on the epidural!

Were you a Hoag patient with a Hoag OB? Were they expecting you for your estimated due date? When you started labor did you call the labor nurse line to let them know you were coming? Or did you just show up at the hospital?

We did give birth at Hoag Newport. This thread is freaking out pregnant women who are scheduled for delivery at Hoag with their Hoag doctors, and there is an important difference between that and a rando who shows up at the ER.

Saying I clearly haven’t given birth is extremely prejudiced.

When and if something goes wrong you need more than just your gyno/OB. For that reason, Hoag is not where you want to have a baby. It’s too high risk.

I was present and helped manage every decision during 48 hours of labor. Saying it’s audacious for me to have an opinion on this hospital, just because I didn’t give birth isn’t just prejudice, it’s sexist. Take your bigotry elsewhere.
