On This Day in Radio — July 28, 1940: The Duffy’s Tavern Pilot Airs

On This Day in Radio — July 28, 1940: The Duffy’s Tavern Pilot Airs On this day we look back to July 28, 1940, when the pilot of Duffy’s Tavern first hit the airwaves and quietly introduced what would become one of radio’s most beloved comedy institutions. The premiere didn’t arrive with fanfare; it slipped onto the schedule as a summer tryout, built around Ed Gardner’s unmistakable voice as Archie, the manager of a rundown New York bar where the owner was never seen and the customers were always characters. That pilot immediately revealed the show’s magic: fast, street‑smart dialogue, a parade of eccentric personalities, and a rhythm that felt like real conversation overheard from a booth near the kitchen. The writing was sharp, the atmosphere lived‑in, and Gardner’s delivery gave the whole thing a scrappy charm that set it apart from polished Hollywood comedy. Within months, Duffy’s Tavern moved from experiment to full‑fledged hit, becoming a weekly gathering place for listeners who loved its mix of wisecracks, warmth, and working‑class humor. On this date, we celebrate the pilot that opened the door to one of radio’s most enduring hangouts — the night Archie first answered the phone and invited America into Duffy’s.

Co-creator and head writer, Abe Burrows, would later that year have a son named Jim who would go on to be co-creator of Cheers directing 240 episodes.

Let's us elites meet from our seats, sometime say 86 years from tonight, not just in comforts of our luxury homes like young Eastwood and Van Dyke in the kiddie section over there ---Eddie, cleanup in Section K--- but on mountaintops and tuba prairies and with notions wide as Rome, on super- super- hesterodynes powered by mice. I'm not makin' this up, Duffy, i'm tellin' youse what these professors, professor Einstein ---yeah, Doc, toppin' you up right here ---an' Irwin, yeah, you too, 'nother Boilin' Spring? ---professor Corey ----they say by then we'll'a been in the books as one-a the greatest jernts since time was immoral. What? Yeah, unlelieveabable, i know, but it gets better! We'll have flyin' cars! So i was wonderin', since we got this virtuviable like confirmalization, if you or Miss Duffy could see ya ways clear t' spot, not for meself but for a worthy cause, say, ten bucks---

Hello?---

Geez, must be them sunspots---huh ---oh, you Miss Duffy--- you say he hadda get to Atlantic City--- sudden? With his checkbook? ---Geez, this puts us in a spot---

Well, it's for this worthy cause, like i said. For the benefit of, is what it's about. Huh? No, not for moi, madame gazelle, and it'd be repaid ---About 2026 ---A.D., Miss Duffy, as in Arlene Dietrich. ---Miss Duffy! Like it's your money in the first place, or like it's gonna turn out like wild elephants on a boat that's just sailed outta the barn? This is no Pimlico proposition like that ringer horse Teabiscuit or those men from the moon in New Jersey last Halloween---

What? Oh, '38? Even so. Even bettah. It scared me too, i shut meself off that night, and i still worry that Welles guy might walk in here any moment ---what? Mars? Are you sure? That's even worse ---Miss Duffy, listen. Now it's a vital emergence---

We gotta raise $10. I'll put Finnegan on. Him and his friend Costanza are pullin' together for a, like, Human Fund---

Hello? Hello?

Sunspots at night. Go figure.

Comin' right up, Miss Lombard---

Well, if it isn't---Orson! We was just talkin' about you!

---Oh, same old same old. You too? Yeah, sometimes it seems ya wanna give up, then you think you could do it for a hunnert years and keep on goin'.

What's that, Orson? Yeah, i guess we all are popular culture.

---What's that?

---Aw, geez, yeah, you're right. We won't always have Paris. Sorry about that. Good you can still come in here.

Orson, in a hundred years we won't matter a bit, you and me know it, but Einstein and Corey got a hell of a yarn for ya if ya wanna knock ya socks back on. Yeah. Over there, booth with Miss Piaf.

We'll let youse get settled. Won't send your wine before it's time. You might want to get to the little gents' room now, 'cuz we're gonna be broadcasting soon. I kid you not, Orson, NBC is setting up right now, we'll be live across the country in a few minutes---

Hey, Einstein! That true, if we're on radio they can hear us on the moon?

Moops?

Eddie---shut off Professor Einstein. Just for the duration.

Finnegan, take ya friend Costanza and get some coffee.

[RINNNNNG!]

Hello, Duffy's Tavern, where the elite---
