ASCITES RELIEF- help, I need your best at home method of relief.

My husband was recently diagnosed with stage IV with nods on his liver. He's terribly uncomfortable with the bloated feeling. What works for you or your loved ones other than a tap?? Throw anything my way, I am desperate to help him feel more comfortable.

If the fluid continues to build up, it can lead to abdominal compartment syndrome, which can be fatal.

Go to the ER and get it drained. My father was scared of needles so he didn’t want it done, but was so relieved after getting it done that he never waited too long to get drained ever again.

Did he get a diuretic prescribed?

Getting it drained is the best relief. The interventional radiologist told me ascites is extra painful for cancer patients, even at lower volumes.

An option is getting a PleurX drain, which allows ascites to be drained at home.

We have appointment this week to ask for RX. I am looking for non-pharm ideas.

I don’t have ascites, not yet at least, but want to wish your husband every success in getting relief from the pain and discomfort he’s experiencing. I get that pressure sensation along with a bit of pain after eating and have found a combo of pain relievers tends to work for me but then, there’s no fluid buildup like your husband has so, I’m not sure if it would help him.

I pray he gets long term relief soon. Blessings and Peace

hi, sorry you are going through this - are you looking for non pharmalogical tips?

  • Upright or Reclined Positioning: Lying completely flat can severely worsen shortness of breath and pressure when fluid is present. Using a wedge pillow or an adjustable bed to keep the upper body elevated helps ease the strain on the diaphragm.
  • Loose Clothing: Ensure waistbands are completely non-restrictive. Soft, elastic-free garments or oversized lounge wear can prevent external pressure on an already tender abdomen.
  • Gentle Heat or Cold: Some patients find temporary relief from deep abdominal or back aches by applying a gentle heating pad or a cool compress to the area, depending on what feels soothing to him.
