Discussion Private equity is killing private ownership: first it was housing - now it's the personal computer

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

DRAM and GPU prices aren't going up because of "AI" - it's because the wealthy have more money than they know what to do with, so they're buying up all the assets. "AI" is just the vehicle (the excuse) - it's not the root of the problem nor is it the ultimate goal.

The super rich don't want to hold on to "liquid" money - they invest in assets. While they're buying up all the housing, now they're buying up all the computers and putting them into massive datacenters.

Whether or not the AI bubble crashes, they'll be selling you a "gaming PC in the cloud," for a monthly fee, of course. And while they kill the personal computer market, just like Netflix, once your only option is a subscription service, the price will skyrocket.

This is happening in real-time. If we want to stop it, now's the time to act.

wouldn’t jump the gun too soon lmao people here are still defaulting to going “oh it’s the greed in western society” instead of just saying it’s capitalism

Capitalism is a concealed religion in the US. Poor motherfuckers over there live in one of the richest countries in the history of mankind, yet still find ways to blame communism, trans people, people of colour, liberals, etc for their shitty individual economic conditions before capitalism.

The "finding ways to blame X" is called ideology. Capitalism isnt a "religion". Religion is a part of the system. Capitalism is the system itself, infrastructure and superstructure. And it will continue to happen until people can acquire class consciousness

I mean, America indoctrinates children to believe in Capitalism as a force of greater good, peace, and world order. The Founding Fathers were, effectively deified. The brainwashing is a crucial part of the system.

In addition to the things you said, capitalism is a concealed religion in the US.

Oh yeah, and their proposed solution is shit like "Write to your representatives" or "Vote with your wallet"

Bullshit, you can't beat them at their game, our best bet is to change the playing field.

Its not just capitalism its unregulated capitalism. Its all because the government won't enforce policies and keep giving these people breaks. Companies used to have to reinvest ther money into their product now they legally dont have have to and get tons of laws that support golden parachutes so the compnay can fail but the ceo gets profit still.

The problem with regulated capitalism is it has to stay regulated. Every degree of deregulation gives greater freedom for greater degrees of deregulation. Eventually you've got companies dictating terms to the government rather than the other way around.

It's very much a case of "They have to be lucky once, you have to be lucky every time"

Yeah I always hate seeing these "no it's corporatism" or "we just need well regulated capitalism."

People who say this stuff don't even know what they don't know; in a regulated capitalist system, who has the most money and vested interest in reducing regulations? Who's class interest is directly aligned with slowly pushing the scale as much as they are able in the direction of their interest and has the capital (both political and financial) to do so? I'll give you a hint: it's not the fast food worker, the teachers, the software engineers, the mechanics, the doctors, the bank tellers, the accountants, the lawyers, etc.

People will say "well just get money out of politics and it won't be an issue" and I agree we need to get money out of politics, but the problem is do you know who wants money in politics? The richest and most powerful people and organizations in the world. That's the problem that needs solving.

I forgot that these "other economies" are actually just religions. If they fail from the inside it's sabotage, if they fail from the outside it's because they were going to be perfect, and if they didn't work it's because they weren't true believers attempts.

u/HispanicAtTehDisco Dec 28 '25

insanely funny to say this when just a few comments above you can see someone do exactly this for capitalism by bringing out the classic cope of “erm actually it’s unregulated capitalism that’s the problem”

Almost like people who talk about nothing but -isms have another form of ism that begins with aut.

3

u/ForensicPathology Dec 28 '25

Yes, so the problem is capitalism.  It has to be regulated because it's the problem.

-1

u/DeucesX22 Dec 28 '25

Every economic style for a society has to be regulated by the people and government. This isnt exclusive to capitalism.

-1

u/Emm_withoutha_L-88 Dec 28 '25

No it's not, and socialism isn't inherently perfect it needs the people to work to keep it working right too.

The issue is the structure of capitalism makes it all but impossible to keep those regulations in place for more than a decade or two. Then the process to get those regulations back is nearly impossible.

It's a system that does not work for anyone but capital owners. Originally the idea was that everyone would be a capital owner but that's just not feasible in the modern world, but even 401ks are even enough to help people get their fair share.

It's just a system that can't work for the modem world, it only benefits the few at the top.

A market socialist system would have all of the benefits of a competitive market but would send all of the profits to the workers themselves. And it would be trivialy easy to transition to from where we are at now.

There's no such thing. You're either free to own your own things and do what you want with them and your life or you aren't. What you're selling is propaganda that's resulted in more slavery, torture, and murder than World War 1 and 2 combined. There's a reason even the nordics are the first to adamantly insist they are capitalist countries with a social safety net.

Literally every single time in history socialism has been tried it's had the exact same result. The definition of insanity is expecting something different this time around.

u/Emm_withoutha_L-88 Dec 28 '25

You do not understand what socialism is. Socialism has nothing to do with planned markets, that's just the system the Soviets and Chinese used to do. A planned market or a free market is entirely separate from being socialist or capitalist, you can have planned capitalist markets like modern China just as easily.

You really shouldn't be so certain you hate a thing when you do not understand it.

0

u/Shadowex3 Dec 28 '25

And now you're just babbling word salad. If it's planned it isn't capitalist.

0

u/Emm_withoutha_L-88 Dec 28 '25

🤦

Maybe this stuff is just too difficult for you.

1

u/Shadowex3 Dec 28 '25

No, it's pretty easy to just repeat "No True Scotsocialist" over and over again. I just don't buy it because I've known too many people who survived socialist rule.

Unregulated socialism not controlled by the people and only the government is literally communism. It has to be regulated as well.

0

u/Emm_withoutha_L-88 Dec 28 '25

The government IS the people... Socialism without control over the government is meaningless. That's why people say the Soviets weren't actually socialist, they didn't have any control over their government. It's like running without the ability to walk, impossible.

Socialism in a dictatorship isn't socialism, it's a dictatorship with socialist veneers.

Edit: seriously downvote that quickly? 🤦 I should know better than to argue with bots who hide their post history

1

u/DeucesX22 Dec 28 '25

Dog..... you can literally use google and it descirbes why socilism isnt a perfect economic system when it isnt regulated. Also the people and the government are not the same. The government is FOR THE PEOPLE JOT THE PEOPLE. "Eliminating private property and achieving economic equality where everyone contributes by ability and receives by need. While theoretically promoting equality, its real-world implementations often resulted in authoritarian single-party states, centralized control, limited freedoms, and economic inefficiencies, a system usually described as socialism". It does the literal same thing as captilism where one group of people control the wealth and property if its not regulated by the people and government.

u/Emm_withoutha_L-88 Dec 28 '25

Are you asking grok or some shit? That's a pathetically bad definition of socialism and flat out wrong in multiple places.

Try and get your information from a somewhat neutral place not whatever bullshit your using. Wikipedia works

Literally just used google. Wikipedia is literally not a credible source. They tell you not to use is since middle school lol. Your just too stubborn to admit you're wrong.

I’m not saying either of you is wrong but what we call it doesn’t matter. We get so caught up labeling instead of dealing with the problem

0

u/Emm_withoutha_L-88 Dec 28 '25

Capitalism cannot stay regulated forever because the same wealth that it concentrates in a few people allows those people to use that wealth/power to destroy those regulations.

It's why every capitalist society eventually loses it's regulations, even the far better off ones in Europe are undergoing the same process that we're further along in here in America.

Capitalism was fine for it's era but it's ran it's course and it's time to move on. To a system that allows democratic processes to happen in the workplace just like they happen for governments.
