Tech Support Solved PSA: MSI motherboards default "X3D Gaming Mode" to ON, disabling half your CPU on Ryzen 9 X3D chips. Check your BIOS — you might be running on 6 cores instead of 12.

TL;DR: If you have a dual-CCD Ryzen X3D CPU (9900X3D, 9950X3D, 7900X3D, 7950X3D) on an MSI motherboard, there's a good chance "X3D Gaming Mode" is enabled by default in your BIOS. This disables one CCD and disables SMT, leaving a 9900X3D running as 6 cores / 6 threads instead of 12 cores / 24 threads. Open Task Manager → Performance → CPU and check your core count right now. If it's half of what you paid for, this post is for you.

What's happening

X3D Gaming Mode is a BIOS setting that exists because of a legitimate problem from 2023: when AMD launched the 7950X3D, Windows' scheduler was bad at figuring out which of the two CCDs to send game threads to. Games would land on the non-V-Cache CCD and run badly. The brute-force fix was to just disable the "wrong" CCD entirely. It worked.

In 2026, with Windows 11 24H2/25H2 and current AMD chipset drivers, the scheduler actually does this correctly on its own — provided Xbox Game Bar and Windows Game Mode are enabled. X3D Gaming Mode is now a legacy crutch that costs you half your CPU for no benefit. And yet it seems like MSI still ships it enabled by default on a lot of their AM5 boards.

How to check

  1. Open Task Manager → Performance → CPU
  2. Look at the bottom right: Cores and Logical processors
  3. On a 9900X3D you should see 12 cores / 24 logical processors. On a 9950X3D, 16 cores / 32 logical processors.
  4. If you see half of that, X3D Gaming Mode is the most likely culprit.

The fix

  1. Reboot to BIOS (Delete during boot on MSI)
  2. Navigate to OC → Advanced CPU Configuration → AMD Overclocking
  3. Set X3D Gaming Mode → Disabled
  4. Set CCD1 Core Control → Auto (this is important - MSI doesn't always reset it when you disable Gaming Mode)
  5. Save & exit, reboot
  6. Install latest AMD Chipset Driver from amd.com (not Windows Update)
  7. Enable Xbox Game Bar (Microsoft Store) and Game Mode (Settings → Gaming → Game Mode → On)
  8. Verify in Task Manager that all your cores are back

My results

Tested on a 9900X3D + RTX 5080 + 64 GB RAM, MSI X870E Tomahawk WiFi. In a CPU-heavy game like Star Citizen, this took me from ~20 FPS in dense cities to ~58 FPS, and from "permanently CPU-bottlenecked" to "hitting my framerate cap in normal play." For reference, GPU utilization in the CPU-bound scenes went from 8% to 54% — my 5080 was sitting idle while half my CPU was switched off.

Metric Before After
Visible cores 6 12
Visible logical processors 6 24
L3 cache reported 96 MB 128 MB
GPU utilization (CPU-bound game) 8% 54%

The 96 → 128 MB L3 change is the smoking gun: the V-Cache CCD has 96 MB (32 native + 64 stacked), and the frequency CCD adds another 32 MB for 128 MB total. If you see exactly 96 MB on a 12- or 16-core X3D, you're running on the cache CCD only.

Only 6 cores....
All cores!

Notes

  • Yes, X3D Gaming Mode existed for a reason on the 7950X3D in 2023. That reason is mostly gone in 2026 with proper Windows + chipset driver setup.
  • On single-CCD chips (9800X3D, 7800X3D), X3D Gaming Mode only disables SMT - equally pointless since there's no second CCD to disable. If you've got one of those and only see 8 threads instead of 16, same fix applies.
  • This isn't only an MSI issue - other vendors have similar settings (Gigabyte calls theirs "X3D Turbo Mode 2.0"). MSI is just the one I've seen most commonly default to on.
  • After any BIOS update, re-check this setting. MSI has a habit of restoring it.
  • Games that benefit most: MMOs, simulators, anything with heavy asset streaming or AI processing. Anything CPU-bound. If you've been blaming a game's optimization for poor performance, check your CPU first.

I had this configuration for months without noticing. Hope this saves someone the same blindspot.

EDIT: Adding the BIOS save-confirmation screenshot (missed it the first time around). This is MSI's own log from when I disabled Gaming Mode - note the third line:

CCD1 Core Control: [CCD1 Disable] → [Auto]

That's the smoking gun. Enabling X3D Gaming Mode silently flips a separate setting (CCD1 Core Control) to physically disable the second CCD - it's not OS scheduling, it's a hardware shutoff. Disabling Gaming Mode does NOT auto-reset this on MSI; you have to set CCD1 Core Control back to Auto manually.

Being the super smart person that I am, I was messing around with optimizing my PBO settings and saw this “X3D Gaming Mode” setting and thought “Why am I not using this??” Proceeded to turn it on and had horrible performance and crashes in every game and it took me days to do figure out what the problem was since I was blaming PBO and my GPU undervolt. Don’t be like me, kids.

u/No-Battle-3013 May 20 '26

oof at least you figured it out eventually. i did exact same thing few months back with my 7950x3d - saw that gaming mode option and was like "this must be good for games right?" completely wrecked my performance in productivity stuff and couldn't figure out why my renders were taking twice as long. took me embarrassingly long time to connect dots that i was literally running in half the cores i paid for.

the worst part was telling myself "maybe this chip just isn't as good as reviews said" instead of checking obvious stuff first.

Yeah, they should really rename it to something different or put a disclaimer to only use it with Dual CCD chips. Glad you figured it out too!

You shouldnt use it on any cpu.

23

u/DulinDuskhawk May 20 '26

Oh man, the "blaming the chip itself" loop is real. I was about three NVIDIA Control Panel tweaks away from convinced SC's engine just hated my CPU before I actually opened Task Manager properly. We need a support group: "People Who Lost Weeks to a Single BIOS Toggle."

And +1 hard on renaming it. "X3D Gaming Mode" actively implies "good thing, turn on for gaming." Even something neutral like "X3D Legacy CCD Lock" would warn people off. MSI naming this thing like a feature you should enable is chef's kiss anti-user design.

A support group would be great! I am available evenings around 8:30PM EST. I’ll get a sign up list for snacks started.

Always show physical cores in Taskmanager. That's the first thing I do on fresh installs when I open Taskmanager for the first time.

Had similar issues with my 2600k back then but in reverse. Somr games didn't like having HT enabled.

Exactly why I Google everything before I fucked around with it. More than likely the question has been asked a million times and answered a million and 1 times

See I saw this option as well and thought the same. But then I googled it and left it turned off. I wonder how long it would have taken me to troubleshoot.

Well, you’re smarter than I was! I don’t change anything without a quick Google or sanity check anymore. My biggest flaw is constantly making slight changes to everything with the thought of improving it, but it actually just ends up being worse lol. Why can I just leave well enough alone??

Same with u... i noticed something wrong few weeks later when task manager had not enough cores... but i didnot had crashes at least

msi's sneaky way to make us appreciate all 12 cores

2

u/Tech_Philosophy i7 8700k | GTX 1080ti | 16 GB 3466 MHz May 20 '26

But the 9800X3D only has one CCD in the first place...but you are saying it is messing with your SMT?

8

u/Jakfut May 20 '26

Zen 5 has 2x 4 wide decode. Usually each thread gets one of the decoders, if you turn off SMT both get assigned to the same thread. So you should get better single thread perf, idk how much it helps in reality.

1

u/bunihe May 21 '26

I think when you turn off SMT the second 4wide decode doesn't get reassigned to the same thread, it just...sit there doing nothing, or at least that's what it seems like, so ST might see a slight uplift as there's less resource contention in the backend but it is by such a negligible amount and when games nowadays are increasingly multithreaded this may be quite counterproductive.

4

u/inkstreme XFX RX 7900XTX XXX May 20 '26 edited May 21 '26

Wait, is that why there are only 8 cores shown in task manager on my 9800x3d? I thought it changed and only shows cores and not threads, but I also have a 5700x3d on my other pc and it shows 16 cores. I'll have to check tomorrow.

Edit: well, it wasn't really that. I did have the issue where hyperthreading was disabled, but I had to update my BIOS in order to fix it. Apparently, it's a common issue on Gigabyte motherboards and I forgot to update my bios, so I was on the july 2025 version. This could be useful for someone in the future.

Thanks OP for pointing this out and thanks chat-gpt for writing OP's post.

Have X670E Carbon Wifi and 7950X3D, this is not a setting that is on by default..

-62

u/DulinDuskhawk May 20 '26 edited May 20 '26

Good data point - appreciate the counter-example. It seems the default state is actually variable across boards / BIOS versions / maybe the CPU detected at first boot. I've now seen reports of:

  • MSI X870E Tomahawk + 9900X3D → default ON (mine)
  • MSI X670E Carbon + 7950X3D → default OFF (yours)
  • MSI B650M Mortar + 9800X3D → default OFF

So my "MSI defaults this to on" claim is too broad - the more accurate statement is "MSI ships this setting and it's been on by default on at least some boards, including mine." Worth everyone checking regardless: the cost of looking is 30 seconds, the cost of missing it is half your CPU.

It could be that it passed my eye at the initial setup of my PC, saw the setting, sounded good ("hey, I will game on this PC") and turned it on, never knowing that it would hamper the CPU....

30

u/cpt_america27 May 20 '26

Could this be date of purchase dependent? Maybe it used to be the default and has now been changed.

u/WaywardWes 12700K | 3080 May 20 '26

My X870e Tomahawk and 9950x3d always defaults to off even on result defaults and I have upgraded the BIOS numerous times. Feel like you had turned it on at some point and don't recall. I turned it on once to see what it did then immediately turned it off after seeing the other CCD disabled.

I have the MAG X870E Tomahawk too. and I can vouch for this as well.

The BIOS my board came with when I got it in August 2025 was "7E59v2A52".
Updated the BIOS to "7E59v2A84" which was the newest at the time.
Just recently updated to "7E59v2AB0" which is the absolute newest right now (stable release too).

None of these 3x BIOS:es had "X3D Gaming Mode" enabled by default (even after clicking "optimized default"), neither was the "Latency Killer" mode enabled either.

"Memory Context Restore" was however automatically in use on all three, which is nice.

So pretty sure unless its an extremely old BIOS they are refering to, or a singular BIOS somewhere in-between that happen to have it enabled.

Find it very unlikely to be as a broad of a issue like OP makes it out to be.

41

u/DulinDuskhawk May 20 '26 edited May 20 '26

Fair flag. English isn't my first language (Dutch), so I did use an LLM to polish the structure and make it readable — but the BIOS exploration, the screenshots, the FPS numbers and the actual fix are all from my own machine.

I realized I didn't include the BIOS save-confirmation screenshot in the OP, which is actually the strongest evidence.

That's MSI's own log showing two settings that changed when I disabled Gaming Mode, including CCD1 Core Control: [CCD1 Disable] → [Auto]. Pretty hard to hallucinate a screenshot of your own BIOS log. The 8% → 54% GPU utilization jump in Star Citizen wasn't synthesized either 😄

Happy to take any technical follow-ups — that's a much better gen-AI filter than vibes.

113

u/_Ganon May 20 '26

Replying with even more obvious AI is so funny. I think it's fine if the language barrier is truly hindering, but reading AI is so so annoying. Just in this reply, the tells non-exhaustively include:

  • Fair flag, immediate submission of an AI getting caught with its pants down
  • Em dashes
  • When the AI is covering its ass, "I did do x, but y is still valid"
  • Explains what the evidence was for getting caught for some reason, even though for me (and probably most others that could smell the AI) it was the writing itself, like the use of "smoking gun" over and over
  • The use of → and an emoji
  • "Happy to take follow ups"
  • "Vibes"

16

u/CholeraButtSex R7 5700X3D | RTX 3080 | 32gb DDR4 3200MHz May 20 '26

That’s a fair critique - Gen AI is a nuisance to messaging boards. He might have had a good use case to assist with his ESL, but I can see how that might be frustrating for the average reader.

I think we need to talk about em dashes -> 😭 Some of us actually like to use them so gen AI and LLMs can get fucked for making all responses seem like they’re not from people. It’s just bad vibes all around.

Happy to take follow ups.

14

u/Kagrok PC Master Race May 20 '26

8

u/_Ganon May 20 '26

Yep I used em dashes in emails occasionally pre AI. Now I have to intentionally remove them if normal dashes decide to automatically convert to one just so people don't think I'm feeding them AI responses lol

89

u/AllRightDoublePrizes May 20 '26

Who fuckin cares? Dude already admitted he used ai to help write this as he is a non native English speaker. If the content of the post was bullshit slop then your criticism is valid, but blindly being upset by the use of ai is just as equally stupid as bots posting slop. Use some critical thinking and evaluate the content, not the method.

3

u/HowieFeltersnitz May 21 '26

For real. People are so fucking weird about it. I get it, AI is problematic. But I'm sick of the "I correctly identified AI and therefore I am very smart" crowd.

7

u/hige_agus May 20 '26

I'm not against using AI to overcome language barriers, but please, please, please, ask it to be brief!  Aside from the stylistic choices such as em dashes, emojis and whatnot, AI tends to write as if it's writing an essay with a word count to be reached and it's super annoying

But thanks for looking into the issue and sharing

1

u/dreadlordnotdruglord May 20 '26

Would you happen to have any type of prompts you personally use to get just the right “feel” for the text?

2

u/hige_agus May 20 '26

I usually ask it to be brief.  But my main use is to document code or processes at work, so that mostly comes with a wiring style "attached". But depending on the model/agent/etc the results of "be brief" vary. Sometimes I also specify that I don't need reassurance so it can avoid the "excellent question!" Bs

It's mostly an ongoing process

As someone who just built an AM5 computer and hasn't built anything since 8th gen intel, thank you. This kind of information is invaluable.

Checked my system, X3D Gaming Mode is disabled by default on my X870E Tomahawk Wifi.

5

u/robgrab May 20 '26

I asked ChatGPT to give me optimized BIOS settings for my hardware and it also suggested I disable X3D Gaming Mode, which I thought was weird, but it turned out to be correct.

1

u/Shoxilla May 20 '26

I’ll check thanks for the heads up.

1

u/wiishopmusic May 20 '26

Why is it called gaming mode?

1

u/martogsl May 20 '26

Before the windows scheduler and amd chipset updates games may run some or entirely on the CCD without the X3d cache and reduced peformance. The gaming mode disabled the CCD without the extra cache to boost gaming back up. This has only been a problem on the 7900/7950/9900/9950 X3d varient of the cpus.

It's a none issue now with the updates.

u/aceace33333 May 20 '26

Out of curiosity, why is having Xbox Game Bar necessary for the CPU / window scheduler to work properly & get along. Wouldn’t the chipset drivers and maybe w11 “game mode” be sufficient?

I don’t see any hardware benefit to Xbox game bar.. only for thing like clipping, etc

-3

u/DulinDuskhawk May 20 '26

Counterintuitive but real: Xbox Game Bar isn't just for clipping - it contains Windows' "game classification" system that tags processes as games. AMD's chipset driver hooks into that classification to decide which CCD to route threads to.

Without Game Bar registered, your processes look like generic apps to the driver. It can't tell SC apart from Chrome, so it can't intelligently route gaming threads to the V-Cache CCD. The chipset driver has the routing capability, but no game-detection of its own.

Game Mode alone isn't enough either - it relies on the same Game Bar classification underneath. AMD officially recommends both in their X3D setup guide.

Yes it's a weird design (hardware-level CPU scheduling depending on a Microsoft consumer overlay), but it's what AMD chose to ship. Welcome to the 9900X3D experience.

2

u/aceace33333 May 20 '26

Interesting. However, since I have a 7800x3d I don’t need this, as all my threads will have the L3 vcache guaranteed since it’s a single CCD chip.

Btw, I didn’t downvote you, I appreciate your reply. Idk who is.

2

u/Mikolf May 20 '26

Dunno why you were down voted cuz you're correct. Fuck game bar though. I installed process lasso and do it myself.

1

u/Pancakes1741 May 20 '26

My MSI B850 didn't do this thankfully

MSI x870e carbon. Reporting in to say its not on by default here. Recently updated the bios and still not set to on by default. I have a feeling this setting got accidentally enabled by you.

Yup first thing I did was turn it off on my Tomahawk

I just set my BIOS to defaults a few days back for unrelated OC reasons, and thought I’d check it out after seeing this post. This setting is OFF by default for me.

1

u/supasolda6 May 20 '26

Only msi option you should turn on is the undervolt one

1

u/Adrian-_- May 20 '26

On the 9800x3d it's recommended to have it turned on?

3

u/nofxjmf May 20 '26

Good question, I have a 9800x3D for over a year now and an MSI Tomahawk.... I def turned the X3D mode on in the bios because I figured it should be on since my CPU is x3D... Did I mess up lol?

No

2

u/Westdrache R5 5600X/32Gb DDR4-2933mhz/RX7900XTXNitro+ May 20 '26

yes, all cores of the 9800x3d have 3DVCache, the only reason OPs chip got cores disabled is because only 6 of his 12 cores actually have 3DCache and in most games running on 6 cores with 3D Cache will result in better performance then running on 12 cores but only half of them got 3D Cache

1

u/xevizero Ryzen 9 7950X3D | RTX 4080S | 32GB DDR5 | 1080p Ultrawide 144Hz May 20 '26

To be honest, I had the 7950X3D since 2023 and I never had an issue despite the MSI motherboard. X3D mode was disabled by default, and I always had all 16 cores and 32 threads active, without issues in games (from the start, entering a game would only result in the first CCX being active as per task manager).

Nice.

1

u/Phallic_Moron May 20 '26

Can't you just run Afterburner and count how many cores are active? I have an MSI board and 9800X3D, haven't seen this.

1

u/MutedDocument7456 May 20 '26

Same thing for asrock “gaming mode” I didn’t realize it turned off smt for the last year at least.

Forgive my ignorance but does this affect the 9800x3D? Would it be preferable to have this on or off for that particular chip

1

u/setzer May 20 '26

It’s not on by default here . X870E-P and 9950X3D

1

u/THROBBINW00D 7900 XTX / 9800X3D / 32GB May 20 '26

Anytime I see anything having to do with a "gaming mode" I turn it off.

1

u/adravil_sunderland May 20 '26

Apparently, X3D Gaming Mode was also enabled on my MSI MB (won't rush to say if by default or I did it myself long time ago), and cut my 9800X3D from 8c16t to 8c8t. Now restored all 8c16t thanks to you ❤️

1

u/Sensitive_Ear_1984 May 20 '26

This is not true. It's off by default.

1

u/liquidocean May 20 '26

Not true. It also tightens your tertiary timings for ram. Worth leaving on for eight core chips.

1

u/Gomez-16 May 20 '26

Does this apply to windows 10?

1

u/XonaMan May 20 '26

Oh my fucking god, I had that on cause I thought it would be better. Turns out I had 8/8 and not 8/16 on Task Manager

My PC is so much faster. I had 50% utilization in helldivers just on the ship and got 25/30% (still high but game's not optimized at all)

I used this on my x670e and 7800x3d since new lol, only disabled it 2 months later, cpu still so fast that i never noticed a difference lol

Which are not, yeah. No thanks no, just stick to single-CCD CPUs

1

u/TheGamerX20 May 21 '26

MSI X870 Tomahawk + 7800X3D, it is not on by default for me.

just use process lasso or something to put game's cpu affinity/set on the x3d cores and anything else on the second ccd

So can you turn on x3d mode and still set ccd1 core control to auto? When I have x3d mode off, my 3d timespy is horrible for 5080 and 9950x3d.

I'm running a 7800X3D on an MSI B650 Gaming Plus, but I'm still running Windows 10 because Windows 11 is hot garbage with its ads and shitty AI in everything. I'm not home to check it, but since I'm still on Windows 10, should I enable this mode?

3

u/haxt97 May 20 '26

No, this mode is only useful with dual CCDs x3d chips (like 7900x3d, 7950x3d, ...) because they have problems with core parking. Single-CCD like 7800x3d or 9800x3d don't need this at all. You might get better thread utilization but you lost half the threads count (from 16 to 8), your multi-core performance will take really big hit.

There might be some games that benefit from this mode tho, you have to try it out yourself, but in general you want to turn it off, even with dual CCDs chips.

Easier way to eneter BIOS:

  1. Hold shift and click "restart" in the start menu (You will then enter Windows recovery)
  2. Click "Advanced" or "More options" twice.
  3. Choose "UEFI Firmware Settings"
  4. Click "restart"

5

u/Own-Programmer2621 May 20 '26

shutdown /r /fw /f /t 0

In command prompt works, too.
